The nonionic cellulose ether, a kind of water-soluble polymer, is used for several cement matrices such as plastering mortar, ceramic tile mortar, self smoothing flooring compound, high fluidity concrete, antiwashout underwater concrete, shot concrete and cement extrusion molding e. t. c.. The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of the moIecuIar weight and the concentration of cellulose ether on characteristic in three kind of concrete (high fluidity concrete, antiwashout underwater concrete and shot concrete) containing cellulose ether. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Characteristics of concrete (such as the resistance of segregation e. t. c.), as well as mortar and cement paste was previously reported, were affected by the molecular weight and the concentration of cellulose ether. 2) Characteristic factors were able to be expressed by the following function of the molecular weight and the oncentration on material design method. Characteristic factors ∝ M^α×C^β where M : moIecuIar weight of cellulose ether, C : concentration, α, β : (0.67, 1.0) or (-0.67, -1.0)

The strength development of concrete using low heat cement, i.e. fly ash cement, moderate heat portland cement, etc. in massive structure are investigated based on the data of some experiments carried out in past time. The difference in strength between concrete in structure and concrete specimen for quality control cured under the same temperature history in the structure are compared. The correction coefficient of concrete strength to determine the proportioning strength cured under high temperature in early age in massive structure was proposed based on this investigation.

The slipperiness is very important characteristic of ceramic floors. So, it is important to establish the estimating method for not only the initial slipperiness but the changing of slipperiness of ceramic floors due to abrasion. In this study the relation between the slipperiness and the surface roughness was investigated. Resulting in, the corelation between the surface roughness (Rpk) and the slip resistance (C.S.R) was cleared. And the abrasion testing machine was developed for the purpose of estimate the changing of slipperiness due to abrasion by means of Rpk and C.S.R.

With the lack of natural materials etc., various "imitation" similar to "real" is used as building finishing materials. Now, it needs to be made clear how similar the imitation is to the real (aimed at). So, it is important to extract the factors that influence the imitativeness of imitation, and to make clear fundamental points for more similarity. First, we investigated visual impressions of the real and the imitation, and the change of visual impressions through several times of observation. Second, we investigated visual judgment of the real or the imitation, and imitativeness of the imitation. Last, we extracted the factors that influence the imitativeness of the imitation, and made clear fundamental points when producing and choosing the imitation more similar to the real.

Full scale shaking table tests of beam-to-column welded connections were conducted under loading simulated Hanshin-Awaji earthquake at room temperature. In parallel to this, Charpy impact tests were also carried out. Fracture surface of large beam-to-column welded connections and small Charpy impact specimens were observed by a scanning electron microscope(SEM). The main conclusions obtained are as follows. (1) SEM fractography showed that cleavage was observed in large specimens fractured at room temperature. This confirmed that steel structure components were brittle fractured on Hanshin-Awaji earthquake. (2) Ductile fracture surfaces specified by dimples were formed ahead of brittle fracture surfaces in large scale specimens. Similar phenomena were observed in small specimens of Charpy impact tests. (3) The relationship between Charpy absorbed energy and ductile crack depth from notch root for Charpy impact specimens was independent of the material and temperature without the upper shelf region. Based on the results, We proposed that when the ductile crack depth of large specimen was the same that of Charpy impact specimen, the toughness of large specimens was evaluated as the Charpy absorbed energy.

This paper presents the aerodynamic characteristics of fluctuating pressures acting on a two-dimensional stationary square prism in a smooth flow. Instantaneous pressure distributions on the circumference of a square prism were simultaneously measured. The stagnation point oscillates synchronized with the fluctuating lift and it also moves to the opposite side against the movement of the separated flow. When the separated shear layer approaches to the side surface, the large negative pressure appears over the side surface, whereas when the shear layer moves away, the negative peak pressure occurs near the trailing edge due to the secondary reverse flow at the trailing edge.

This paper shows elasto-plastic response characteristics and applicability of analytical methods of a hysteretic damper type base-isolated building of small-scale and light-weight under wind action. In the study, time history response analyses are carried out for three kinds of analytical model which are sway model, 1st modal model and multi-mass model. The results are discussed following steps / issues. (1) Understand and classification of the elasto-plastic behaviors by applying the sway model. (2) Applicability of the sway model by comparing the results based on the sway model with the multi-mass model. (3) Applicability of the suggested simple analysis method by comparing the results of the 1st modal model with the multi-mass model.

In the fields of structural safety and structural dynamics, there are many areas in which it is often desirable to compute the first few statistical moments of a performance function. In previous studies, five- and seven-point estimates for statistical moments have been proposed, in which the estimating points are independent of the random variable in original space and high-order moments of the original random variables are not required. These methods have been verified to be generally efficient for estimating the first two moments of a function of random variables. In the present study, in order to improve the estimation accuracy for high-order moments, the general relationship between the weights and concentrations in arbitary number are derived, and the concentrations up to 21 points for a function of a single random variable as well as the formulas for the first six moments of a function of multiple random variables are presented. From several numerical examples, it is shown that high-order moments can be estimated with high accuracy using the proposed formulations.

A stochastic method is proposed in this paper for evaluating short period ground motions based on synthesis method taking account of the randomness of inhomogeneous slip distribution of the source. RMS (root mean square) acceleration responses near source area were estimated by the random response theory using a non-stationary stochastic process as a Green's function. As an example analysis, RMS acceleration responses for the Nagamachi-Rifu fault were evaluated in Sendai area. RMS acceleration responses were good agreement with those by Monte Carlo simulation for the 500 samples synthesized using a stochastic Green's function. The expected value of maximum acceleration was estimated to be 3 to 4 times larger than the maximum value of RMS response for this example analysis. The expected maximum accelerations from RMS acceleration response on the pre-Quaternary stratum near the fault were discussed.

Since earthquake ground motions are very uncertain even with the present knowledge, it is desirable to develop a robust structural design method taking into account these uncertainties. Critical excitation approaches are promising and a new probabilistic critical excitation method is proposed. Different from the conventional critical excitation methods, stochastic response indices are treated as the objective function to be maximized. The power (area of power spectral density function) and the intensity (magnitude of power spectral density function) are fixed and the critical excitation is found under these restrictions.

This article presents a technique to build 3 dimensional underground structure for earthquake ground motion estimation directly from gravity anomaly. The local gravity anomaly is evaluated by subtracting the regional gravity anomaly from the Bouguer anomaly, and the depth of irregular shaped bedrock is regressed assuming linear dependency to the local gravity anomaly along reflection survey lines and at outcrops. Since gravity anomaly around Japan is well studied, this method is effective especially for the regrion where few underground surveys are conducted. We apply this method to construct 3D underground model around the epicentral region of the 1997 Northwestern Kagoshima prefecture earthquake. Three dimensional finite difference method with this 3D underground structure model simulates the observed records better than that with simple 1D underground structure model.

Incompatibility tensors in rectangular Cartesian coordinates are derived for making clear the analytical scheme of the conditions of compatibility. The existence of three kinds of solution methods to be constructed through the difference of stress components which are used as unknown functions is shown. One is the method in which normal stress components and shearing stress components are used as unknown functions, the others are the methods in which normal stress components or shearing stress components are used as unknown functions. Fourier's solutions of three solution methods are perfectly coincide with those of the displacement method.

Hybrid stress finite elements based on the beam-column theory to trace elasto-plastic and fracture behavior are developed for concrete member with strain-softening characteristics, wherein the damages are point-wise evaluated. Also, determination procedure of incremental load-displacement path including the instability phenomena due to the softening, such as snap-through and snap-back, is presented, and their adaptability and availability are discussed. Numerical and parametric test results, for the cantilever beams composed of idealized strain-softening material and the simply supported concrete beams, wherein are employed the tangential stress-strain relation using the concept of fracture energy, are given with the experimental ones, and show that the present approach have the excellent promising potentiality to reveal the localization of fracture zone and the size effect on nominal flexural strength of concrete.

The large deflection behavior of spatial rigid frames is analyzed on the basis of the beam-column finite element method using the incremental perturbation technique. A beam-column finite element model is composed of several fiber segments. The numerical results predict with good accuracy the experimental load-deformation curves of the frames subjected to monotonic or cyclic horizontal force under constant vertical load. It is verified that the proposed method of the analysis is effective in the overall range of the large deflection behavior including the critical behavior and deteriorating behavior.

In this paper, the cast-in place pile and ground beam subassemblages, using the pile head semi-rigid connection, were tested to investigated their seismic behavior. Test results showed that the pile head connections had the large deformation performance also in the case of subassemblages with practical shapes and bar arrangement details. Additionally, the estimation methods of the bending strength and deformation characteristics of the pile head connection were proposed and verified, and the anchorage performance of main bars of ground beam in the pile cap and the shear cracking strength of the pile cap were discussed.

The vibration theory of cylindrical shells can be found in Flugge's book, also many papers have been published. However, most of these papers are not on the roof type but on the closed shape, excepting a few, such as Heki's approximate theory and Kunieda's exact but abridged expression of very tedious calculation caused by the singularity problems. So, to avoid those problems, using the potential function and introducing smoothly varying solutions, the exact theory for cylindrical shell roofs is formulated in Fourier series developed in longitudinal direction, and the lists of formulas for necessary quantities are presented in common forms.

The simple calculation technique to predict load-deformation curves and axial force of each column of gypsum board sheathed walls with openings is presented for practical use of structural design. Equilibrium of external and internal moments of unit panels and flexural deformation of columns are considered in this analytical model. Rigid frame is assumed for simplification of calculation procedure. Axial force can be calculated by summing up the vertical forces acting along the column from panels nailed onto it. This calculation technique is verified with racking tests of nine specimens with different opening layout and non-linear finite element analyses.

A model structure which consists of a rigid plate and two springs is supposed. Two springs have the same bi-linear P-б relation. The analogy between two dimensional non-linear behaviors of the model structure and the theory of plasticity is perfectly verified. Then, loading criteria in the theory of plasticity are established. In the case that the translating yield surface and the fixed vield surface are postulated, elastic, elastic-hardening plastic, elastic-perfectly plastic, and, elastic-hardening plastic-perfectly plastic states are possible. State judgement method using the loading criteria is presented. Further, an error correction method is proposed in this paper.

The object of this paper is to make clear the shear transfer mechanism and the shear displacement behavior in the connection of Half Precast RC member. The experiment and the 2-D non-liner finite element analysis were performed on the RC beam with horizontal joint. The study for five specimens whose parameters were joint steel bars and concrete shear-key was carried out. The results are as followed. The influence of shear resistance elements was examined based on our several experimental studies. The shear transfer mechanism and the shear displacement behavior at the interface can be explained by the author's model of shearing force - shear displacement relationship in connection of precast concrete.

In this study, a consideration was conducted regarding a method for calculating ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete beams by means of a plastic analysis of truss and arch mechanisms in the design guidelines for earthquake resistant concrete buildings based on ultimate strength concept, and an improved method with good accuracy in average was suggested. The values of effective factor, ν of concrete compressive strength were inversely analyzed based on the arch mechanism from the past experimental results on ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement, and an equation (17) was induced based on a consideration on compressive strength of concrete partitioned into strips by cracking. As for an assumption of cot φ in the truss mechanism, it was shown that the method A in the design guidelines gives better agreement with the experimental results than the method B does.

A cross-section of cold-formed circular tube is easily deformed by the occurrence of local buckling under loads, which affects the collapse mechanism of the structure. However, few papers have been reported on the cross-sectional deformation of the tubular members. In this paper, axially loaded cold-formed circular tubes were subjected to a monotonic shear loading and the deformation mode of cross-sectional shape, and the cross-sectional deformation ratio of the cold-formed circular tubes in the axial direction at local buckling were clarified. In addition, the deformation mode in which the coefficient of the trigonometric function was assumed by employing the regression analysis and was suitable for experimental measurements.

Bracing members are usually provided in the intermediate points of the H-shaped steel beam to ensure that the steel structures have sufficient strength and deformation capacity. The design criterion of the structure is changing from the specifications regulation to the performance regulation, and it is designed by the various section. There is a little study of the bracing about the steel beam of the large width-to-thickness ratio. This paper represents results of an elasto-plastic analysis in consideration of the local buckling and the lateral buckling, and presents the fundamental data of bracing stiffness and bracing force for steel beam.

Architectural steel structures can be considered as a hierarchy, composed of the building, the system, the subsystem, the member and the material level. This paper studies LCC0_2 corresponding to each of these levels and discusses corresponding means of reducing LCC0_2. To illustrate, calculations were made with respect to an apartment building. If the subsystem level having a building life of 1,000 years should be feasible, it would be possible to reduce LCC0_2 by about 50%, compared to the case of rebuilding every 100 years. In the case of rebuilding every 100 years, if reuse at the member level should be feasible, about 30% reduction of LCC0_2 would be possible. Any recycling at the material level would permit a cut of about 20% in LCC0_2.

In this paper, the behavior of joint panels at the connection of rectangular steel column and two H-shaped beams with different depth are reported. The equilibrium equation of panel and the equation to calculate the stiffness of panel are indicated. And the equation to estimate the strength of panel is proposed. This equation are derived from two collapse mechanisms of the connection of column and beam. On a mechanism, only panel yields. This mechanism is the same one in case of standard panel. On the other mechanism, a part of panel, beam flange and beam web yield. The panel strength derived from the latter mechanism is lower than the strength derived from the former. In order to confirm the suitability of these equations, the loading tests of cruciform subassemblages were carried out. The strength and collapse mechanism derived from calculation were in good agreement with the results of test.

HF-joint is a high-strength bolted joint using HF-splice plates which have specially worked friction surface and thus enable a very high friction coefficient of over 1.2. The effective sectional area of the net section of connected members with the HF-joint was studied experimentally and the design procedure was shown. First, tensile loading tests were conducted to investigate the force transfer between a member and HF-splice plates by friction near the net section. From these results, the quantity of transferred force was made clear by using a function defined by a ratio of the strength of the gross section to the initial bolt tension. Then equations of the effective sectional area and the maximum strength of the net section were derived. Second, the design procedures in which the transferred force mentioned above was considered were shown for the following two conditions : 1) the gross section is made fully effective in elastic range, 2) no slip is made possible until a required strength is realized.

Theoretical studies are presented on the prediction of bending strength of a long concrete-filled rectangular tube subjected to bi-axial bending. The main objective of this study is to refine the AIJ design formula which is based on the modified superposed strength method. Sophisticated moment magnification factor is introduced, which can be applied to long columns subjected to non-symmetric bi-axial bending. Bending strength of a long column is calculated as the full plastic moment, which is obtained by the generalized-superposed strength method, divided by the moment magnification factor. Proposed formula shows a good agreement with precise numerical solutions.
