Various fast ionization gauges have been developed that are suited for measuring the local density of some transient gas flow (e. g. the gas burst from a fast acting valve expanding into some vacuum chamber).
The operating characteristics of four defferent types of newly designed ionization gauges have been investigated in helium and deuterium at pressures between 10
-3 to 1 Torr. by comparing with an an electron beam fluorescence probe.
The gauge which has a triple-cylindrical grid is found to be sufficiently reliable.
