    The volume production of negative ions are discussed with particular emphasis on the extraction of negative ions from a plasma. The dominant negative ion production mechanism recently discovered is the dissociative electron attachment to highly vibrationally excited molecules. The negative ion production and extraction experiments of the multicusp, the reflex-type and the sheet plasma sources are introduced. It seems that the investigation of the electrostatic field near the plasma-sheath boundary in a magnetic field is necessary to extract the negative ions effectively as well as suppressing electrons.

    Many low-Z materials such as graphite, carbide, oxide, nitride and mixed compounds have been recently developed for the application to reactor wall. In this review particle release phenomena on such wall materials which are related to thermal gas desorption, chemical erosion, radiation induced evaporation and hydrogen isotope exchange desorption are introduced. Surface modification of vacuum wall by low-Z material deposition is one of recent topics. In-situ carbon coating by RF glow discharge in mixture gas of CH4 and D2 or H2 in TEXTOR is a demonstration to achieve impurity free plasma. Hydrogen release from the carbon film is discussed.

    Present status of JET plasma as a typical example of the large tokamak plasma (up to the end of 1985) is reported. Surveys are done on 1) Impurity and radiation problems, 2) Magnetics, 3) Plasma density, n, the density limit and particle control problems (fueling and exhausting), 4) Plasma temperature, T, in connection to the ICRF wave heating and giant sawtooth activity and 5) Energy confinement time, τE, and the scaling laws. The highest value of nT τE has been obtained during the ohmic discharges and it will be a hard task to obtain an objective nT τE value from the present scaling. Subjectives are discussed in relation to the near future plan of the experiments, i. e., 1) Input power upgrade, 2) Separatrix operation, 3) Combined operation of heating and current drive, 4) Surpression of sawtooth activities by RF, 5) Pellet injection and 6) inner limiter discharges. Miscellaneous thoughts concerning on the plasma disruption (self-selection) and the profile consistency (self-organization) are made from the view point of a theorist.

    We have developed a new diagnostic method to measure a partial pressure of helium (He) in the presence of deuterium (D2). The principle of this diagnostic method is based on the difference between monatomic and molecular ions in a backscattering process on a solid surface. The mass separation of both gases which have the same mass of 4 is easily done by energy analysis and intensity measurement of the scattered ions. The pressure of 0.1 % He in the D2 gas can be measured with 8.8 % statistic error. It is concluded that this diagnostics can be applied to He ash removal experiments of ALT-II project.
