This is the first of a series of articles on plasma astrophysics. This article is intended to provide a basic knowledge of modern plasma astrophysics and to give a general scope of physical quantities in various astrophysical plasmas. It is shown that the ranges of parameters, such as the density, temperature, field strength, length scale, and time scale, are very wide for astrophysical plasmas. In addition, unlike laboratory plasmas, gravity often plays an essential role.
