Since Science, Technology, and Society (STS) was established as a new emphasis for science education in the United States, STS has challenged traditional instructional strategies which science teachers have used. Recently, in Japanese science education societies, the STS approach has been discussed often. However, there was no information concerning science teachers' perception of global problems related to science and technology, which is one aspect of the STS theme, and the STS approach. So we conducted the survey to clarify the following: (1) the goals which Japanese science teachers see as important; (2) their perceptions of science and technology related global problems; (3) the current situation of teaching about global problems and science teachers' opinions on teaching about global problems; (4) their opinions on the possibility of implementing STS in Japan. The results of this survey indicate that Japanese science teachers think that the goals of development of process skills and development of problem solving and decision making abilities are important goals in science education, as well as the goal of acquisition of scientific knowledge. And they support the teaching of science and technology related global problems and the STS implementation. At the same time, several problems on STS implementation in Japan were pointed out by them. So, several resolutions for these problems were recommended.
