    The purpose of this study is to examine beginners' skill learning according to the learning theory of constructivism. Here, we made an attempt to get basic data relating to adopting modeling to the skill learning method. We examined students' skill learning by modeling through cutting work of metal by chisel. Observing students' modeling achievement was estimated by comparing the evaluation of with the model, the performing student' and the modeling strategies at three different stages are shown by cluster analysis. As a result of these analyses, in the first modeling stage, students viewed the cutting work summarily and did not organized their work well. However, in the second and third modeling stages, the students performed in a more segmentalised way. In third modeling stage, that students it was connected the manipulations of tools with their evaluation of the work, and their modeling achievement increased over the preceding stages. Further, the cut pieces were measured and turned in to numerical values, and as a result it was show that the modeling learning method has a beneficial effect on advancing cutting performance.

    In this research, the reality of junior high school students' memory of the notion of decomposer was investigated. I also investigated the memory which the junior high school student acquired whether was influenced by the teacher's knowledge and the textbook. As a result, the following was clarified. (1) Memory of the notion of decomposer is not acquired by many junior high school students. (2) There are science teachers who do not understand the decomposer properly. (3) The intellectual skills of the teachers' "classification" influences intellectual skills of junior high school students' "classification". (4) Junior high school students' intellectual skills might be influenced not only by the teachers' intellectual skills, but also the textbook and preconceptions. (5) Teachesr themselves, from the learning experience of the junior high school day confusion is seen in the description of the notion of decomposer through the textbook introduced for the first time in 1975's.

    The purposes of this research are to make the hydraulic ram pump suitable as a teaching material and to examine its characteristics. The hydraulic ram pump raises water to a level which is higher than its original position by simply using the potential energy of the water without using any outside energy such as gas or electricity. In this study, we made a hydraulic ram pump, which can be made easily and whose characteristics can be experimented, and examined its characteristics. It has the following characteristics; a. By utilizing a kerosene supply pump, a hydraulic ram pump can be made easily. b. It is possible to experiment with changing conditions by utilizing the joint of the water service pipe. c. It is possible to experiment in the simple operation of measuring the quantity of water. d. There is no significant difference on the pumpage of the hydraulic ram pump, even if the angle of the feed pipe is changed. e. The pumpage of the hydraulic ram pump increases, as the head gets bigger. f. The pumpage of the hydraulic ram pump increases with the length of the feed pipe. g. The pumpage of the hydraulic ram pump increases when a weight was attached to the water pumping valve. The hydraulic ram pump has a strange aspect which apparently does not obey the energy conservation law. Therefore, it has great potential as a teaching material for inquiry activities.

    This study aims to examine the potential of environment-conscious wood materials for scientific activity programs toward "sustainable society", which have not yet appeared. To analyze the potential of and difficulties with material-based education, the author surveyed the academic trends in cellulose science, profiles of materials, and reports on integrated study and environmental education. The experiments were done with a digital camera and a molecular frame model to assist 3 D understanding of cellulose molecules. From the survey, the principal aspects of the materials to be scoped and some hints to reduce the learning barrier were derived in order to promote these activities. Relating extensions of the activity and coordination between education and production sites are especially promising.

    In this study, we developed a web-based teaching material which we termed the "Peg Game." The purpose of the development of this game was to offer a means of supporting the mathematical activities of students at Upper Secondary Schools for the Deaf. We also examined the teaching effectiveness of this game at the school which utilized it. In order to do so, we established two experimental classes. Experimental Class 1 used original materials, and Experimental Class 2 used the developed web-based material. We then analyzed the performance of these classes and made a comparison. We found that the developed web-based material was able to support the mathematical activities of deaf students. The web-based material had an effect on bringing the activities into focus and increasing students' awareness of movement rules, and also promoted independent activities and offered a means of visual support. Additionally, in terms of our examination of the effectiveness of the teaching style which made use of the web-based material, it was suggested that the utilized web-based material supported the students' understanding of mathematical rules and laws, and had an effect in promoting communication between students who are more indenendently-minded.

    The purpose of this paper is to introduce an example of pupils' investigative learning in tidal flats supported by museum staff. We conducted a lower secondary school pupils' field learning supported by a museum in cooperation with a school. Six grade nine pupils started to investigate tidal flats as the study of an optional science course in their school. They were guided and supported by a science teacher who asked the museum staff to advice her and her pupils. In order to explore their learning outcomes, we examined the progress of pupils' conceptual understandings about tidal flats during educational practice. Their understanding about the tidal flats became more detailed, developing from a vague notion of "tidal flats" to one of ecosystem.

    This study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of a practical training program of manufacturing activities on the transition of images with regard to "manufacturing activities in primary schools" in teachers. We invited teachers to participate in an "Introductory course on practical training in manufacturing activities", which consisted of a course of seven class meetings of 90 minutes each. Participating teachers rated their emotional images with regard to "manufacturing activities in primary schools", and the extent to which the training would have an effect upon the imagination, creativity and so on of the schoolchildren. Furthermore, participants were asked to rate their preferences for each manufacturing activity and their images concerning the extent to which schoolchildren would become skilled at the use of each tool and to which they would acquire a feeling of effectiveness. It was found that practical training of manufacturing activities had positive effects on the transition of images with regard to "manufacturing activities in primary schools" in teachers.

    Many problems exist when creating teaching materials for the testing of thermal qualities of fibers through heating. For example, many clothes are necessary for burning for the purpose of the distinguishing the type of clothes, and therefore injurious gases which may affect the health of students were apt to break out during burning. In this report, by approaching the fiber to a hand-made heat source of the microscope stage the phenomena on cutting were observed, and the thermal quality of fibers could be presumed. This experiment showed that the distance from the fiber to the heat source was in inverse proportion to the softening point of the fiber. By observing the point of the cut fiber, it can be presumed that the fiber which formed a sphere at the point was produced by the melting of raw materials. The other fibers were produced by solving the raw materials with adequate solvent, and extending the fiber from the solution through a hole. These experiments showed that thermal quality and production of fibers can be understood from a molecule standpoint.
