Tourism as we know today has become a global phenomenon, and its harmony with the society, economy and environment is required. Under these circumstances, it is necessary to provide an integrated, comprehensive, global and interdisciplinary approaches for the study of tourism. Accordingly, it is required to establish a tourism research center by the close coordination between the governmental and private organizations. It aims to promote tourism study from the level of the state and to contribute to tourism policy making. It is expected to be financially supported by the government. This paper aims to present foundation plan, necessity, objects and organization of the tourism research center after the model of Centre des Hautes Etudes Touristiques, Universite de Droit, d'Economie et des Sciences d'Aix-Marseille. There is none of such high level of research center in Japan and I keenly realize the necessity of its foundation.

The aim of this paper is to consider epistemological meanings of two concepts in tourism studies: Maxime and Wertfreiheit. Maxime can be seen as a ground of means-end relationship in tourism studies; Wertfreiheit is a fundamental rule concerning the rigid distinction between recognition and evaluation of facts by which tourism researchers should abide. Both the concepts may be important in the construction of “tourismology” as a distinct discipline. In order to discuss these problems more concretely, a Maxime of “alternative tourism” is exemplified. Through this consideration, characteristics of tourismology as a practical discipline will be clarified.

Recently, people came to being interested in leisure time, because they work only five days in a week, and so they have more free time. Pieple are visiting a spa for a tour and recreation to feel relief and relax and want mother nature. The aim of this study is to clarify the image of a “Hitoh” - It means a hot spring which has kept a tradition going in the grandeur nature. - on the basis of conception of hospitality and soft-tourism. In the first place, we analyzed the linguistic image by using off semantic differential method and factor analysis. Next we analyzed the visual image by using of paired comparison and information theory. As a result, we found out that the image of “Hitoh” is very close to the deep snow, the grandeur nature, a hot spring well out, and friendly, comfortable hospitality through the linguistic and visual image.

Ecotourism has been considered as a new type of tourism that has attracted interest from both the conservation sector and the tourism sector. It is widely accepted that ecotourism is a substantial initiative which attempts sustainable use of the environment in destination areas. Based on that, ecotourism has provoked a great deal of argument in Japan as well as in the rest of the world since the mid 1980s. However, there have only been a few attempts made so far to study the practical features of ecotourists in Japan. This paper is about an investigation of bird watchers at Hegurajima off Noto Peninsula, and is intended as a case study of nature oriented tourism. Hegurajima is a small island, famous as one of the best places for bird watching in Japan. Over 800 bird watchers visited the island in 1994. This survey was carried out in 1994 and 1995, and questionnaires were distributed to all bird wachers coming to the island. The results present various useful indications for both the environmental conservation and future visitor management of the island.

Global environmental issues such as global warming, acid rain and ozone layer depletion have been highlighted as threats to economic growth and even to the future of our species. Today, environmental cosiderations are also major concerns in air transport and toursim sector. Accordingly, this paper examines the environmental impacts of the air transportation sector and the actual coditions and issues of global envoirmental protection mainly from the point of economy system and business management. According to the economics analysis, it is required to change the social and economy system so as to make producers to bear “externalities”, the costs of environmental issues. The meaning of sustainable development is examined by the three types of definitions. Lastly, environmental management of airlines and the relationship between air transport and sustainable tourism are studied. For sustanable development of tourism as well as air transport, we should make a contribution to the preservation of ecological balance by all means including restructuring of economy system and business activities.

In order to compare the five regional railroads, the relevance between the tourist resources and the tourists concerning the five regional railroads is discussed in this paper. One of the results of the analysis on the tourist resources along the regional railroads, based on the research of the differences between developmental and successful regional railroads, is proportional to the number of tourists. That is, addition valuation that shows the contents and the number of tourist resources is determined by the formula, it is proportional to the number of tourists. Density valuation that shows the contents of the tourist resources is determined by the number of high-rankings of the tourist resources. Variety valuation that shows the kinds of the tourist resources is determined by the number of kinds of the tourist resources. Density valuation and variety valuation are not proportional to the number of tourists.

The Spanish “parador” has one basic characteristic: this introduces into the hospitality industry the complexity of the local values, traditions, history, legend and culture that materialize the architecture and the landscape. In 1926 Vega Inclán, who was the Royal Tourist Commissioner, had the idea of setting up a series of State Paradors. His inicial concept is that the State gives preference to promote a paticular area of natural beauty or historic-artistic interest by building an inn nearby and, as much as possible, by restoring an old monument and putting it to practical use with the instalation of all the comforts of a modern hotel. The purpose of this article is to analyze the paradors’ development concepts and possible applications to the world hospotality industry.

Dealing with cultural heritage, this paper points out to the introduction of ethnic tourism by immigrants’ cultures. In the 1990s, inbound tourism became the main acquisition of foreign currencies in Australia. However, as Australian tourism was based on a monocultural structure which depended on natural resources, the revenue from this industry was unstable. Hence, alternative resources for tourism were needed. Since the introduction of multiculturalism into Australia by Whitram’s government, ethnic cultures are becoming widely popular. One of the most significant phenomenon in current urban Australian society is the rapid increase of Asian restaurants. A trend that will make ethnic tourism possible.

Tourism of Forest and Mountain village concerning its’ interest and evaluation were discussed at the Tourism Bracken Park, in Oguni Town, Yamagata pref, through questionnaires to customers in 1986 and 1995. Ages of the customers were mainly 40 to 50, and reasons for the visit were to eat bracken with family or to pick up bracken and to feel nature. Entrance fee of the park was about 2,000 yen per head, and attracted around 14,000 custumers. The total income from the entrance fee, 28 million yen, was not so a large amount but it could not be neglected in a mountain village life. Tourism Bracken Parks was ruled on one of tourism resources through exchanges between successors of the village and urban residents from inside and outside the prefecture. For the future concerned, promotion of the community might be applied by development of the food culture of mountain village through natural lodge facilities mainly by the Tourism Bracken Parks.
