Fabricating freeform molding dies from materials such as CVD SiC with mirror surface finish is very challenging. A novel Shape Adaptive Grinding (SAG) method capable of finishing freeform molding dies with surface roughness below 1nm Ra is presented in this paper. The long lifetime of the grinding tools, up-to 10 hours, is also investigated.

In the lapping industry, the most widely and commonly used lapping tool for hard brittle materials is the cast-iron plate. But, there are two problems associated with this lapping tool. First, it has a low removal rate. Secondly, it has a low level of resistance against corrosion. To eliminate these problems, a lapping tool impregnated with stainless steel short-fibers was developed. Using this new tool on single side lapping tests showed excellent results in removal rate of sodalime glass. For the main research, an identical tool was used on a double side lapping machine. As a result, a double efficiency rate of improvements in removal rate was accomplished.

This paper reports the stress field inside of the workpiece under ultrasonically assisted orthogonal cutting (UAC) condition. UAC improves processing accuracy by reducing average cutting force. However general dynamometers have an insufficient frequency band to measure processing phenomena in ultrasonic band. Stress field inside of the workpiece during UAC was observed by combining method consists of the pulse emitting source synchronized with ultrasonically vibrating cutting edge and the photoelastic method. Instantaneous stress field also was observed during UAC. It was found that UAC reduced the stress field in comparison with conventional cutting.

Ultrasonic cutting is a technique that can improve machinability such as to obtain fine surface, reduce tool wear and etc. To improve processing speed of ultrasonic cutting is difficult due to the effects of tool oscillation are invalidated when cutting speed exceeds maximum tool oscillating velocity. In this study, high speed principal direction ultrasonic cutting experiments for soft magnetic stainless steel were carried out to improve processing speed and products quality. The ultrasonic and ordinary cutting performances were observed and compared in phase of turned surface quality, chip wear and built up edge.

To make full use of CNC turning centers, two end-mills can be installed to perform milling in two directions enabling the turning center to operate near the machining capabilities of a 5-axis milling machine, thus the name 4.5-axis milling. In effect, a complex feature can be machined from two directions: parallel and perpendicular to the axis of the rotating workpiece. To facilitate this machining capability, a CAM is developed using open CAM kernel Kodatuno. CAD data in NURBS format is processed to generate cutter locations. For post-processing, an algorithm is created to differentiate the cutter locations into which end-mill can be used and then a cutting path is generated. This novel system is found to be effective in generating an NC file that is simulated and tested in the turning center.

The purpose of this study is mask pattern transfer to diamond by YAG Laser heating in iron powder. The diamond is removed by the graphitized process at the surface of the diamond contacted with the iron powder. In order to select the removing area on the diamond surface, process to transfer mask patterns is performed. The experiments examined the removed volumes of the diamond and influence of the processing conditions such as the size of iron powder, the laser irradiation time, and the laser defocusing. The iron powder after reacting with the diamond were analyzed by a scanning microscope and an electron probe microanalysis. It is deduced that the diamond transferred to the graphite directly at the surface contacted with the iron powder.
