The asymmetry gear has a high pressure angle to the operation tooth surface. Hertzian stress and the flash temperature of the asymmetry gear are small. Therefore, the load-capability can be increased without changing the gear size and the material of the gear. The steel asymmetry gear is already practicalized. As for the plastic gear tooth, the bending strength is more dominant than the tooth surface strength. In this research, it is confirmed by the analysis and the experiment about the load-capability of the asymmetry plastic spur gears.

The methodologies or technologies applied for indirect monitoring of machining processes can be summarized as sensor/sensor system, signal processing, feature generation, feature extraction, feature selection and decision making. This paper concerns the feature generation, feature extraction and feature selection methods in the monitoring of drilling. The features are generated with forces converted from thrust force and torque, extracted by wavelet packet transform (WPT) and selected using principal component analysis (PCA). And the acquired features are then used as inputs to a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) to predict the drill corner wear.

We propose formulation and application of aesthetic B-spline curves and surfaces as a new paradigm of representation of styling design. In 1st report, we have introduced formulation of aesthetic curves by minimizing the deviation of the curvature graph from a line for the n-th power of the curvature radius, and applied it to generate planer curves from boundary conditions and to fit input data. In this report, we derive formulation for space curves and surfaces, and show their experimental results.

In machining with a micro-machine tool and a super-precision machine tool, monitoring the state during the cutting process is extremely difficult since the point where the cutting occurs is very small. In addition, the cutting phenomena involve microscopic behavior. Also, adjusting the height of the cutting tool edge in facing process with a lathe is important because it causes cutting defect at the center of the end face and worsen the surface roughness. In order to examine the relationship between the acoustic emission (AE) signal and the state of cutting surface, AE signals from cutting experiments of end face with different cutting tool edge heights were measured.

This study describes about a newly developed on-machine measurement system for micro-factory with contact and non-contact dual probes. This system has a contact probe, which consist of thin plate cross, shaft and contact ball to detect wall profile of micro parts. Moreover, this system also has a non-contact probe. The laser passes the aperture of cross plate, and measures a displacement of measurement object by using laser trigonometry. A prototype sensor was developed for the first step to confirm our proposal style, and a series of experiments was conducted. Those results show the efficiency of this probe for measuring micro parts with micron order accuracy.

Effect of coating crystal orientation and mineral water mist on adhesion phenomenon were researched. As for the Belag formation, the coated film with (111)-oriented rich had more adhesion than (200)-oriented rich coated film, compared with both orientations. On the other hand, the mineral water mist machining was performed for face milling of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 718. The reduction of adhesion of work material and the suppression of wear were observed when applied the mineral water mist.

The formation of the complex oxide protective layer (Belag) on the worn surface of cutting tool when machined the Ca deoxidized steel was discovered by Opitz. Belag has been used as a free-cutting technique for steel and cast iron because it significantly reduces diffusion wear by preventing direct contact with a tool and work material, thereby prolonging the tool life dramatically. For the Belag formation, it′s one of the conditions to contain TiC in the tool material. It′s said that Belag adheres to the carbide tool surface because TiC in the tool oxidizes and reacts with Belag. Our work aims to clarify the formation and adhesion mechanism of Belag. In this study, Ca deoxidized steel was machined with carbide tools, and the state of the reaction at the interface between tool and the Belag layer was investigated by observation. As a result, Belag directly adhered to Ti carbide particle in the surface of the tool. On the other hand, on parts of WC and Co, Belag didn′t adhere directly. It could not confirm the oxide of TiC and its oxide layer near the interface that Belag adhered as said above.

Cutting experiments were conducted to investigate cutting characteristics in Niobium plates. Niobium is used for a super conductivity material such as an acceleratator cavity because of its high cunductivity, ductility and anti-corrosion property. However, mechanical engineers are unfamiliar with not only the material properties but also the mechanical properties. Hence, the cutting charactersitics have yet been determined. The cutting charactersitics such as cutting forces, mechined surface properties, chip formation mechanism are not investigated sufficiently. The results indicated that the cutting provided not smooth chip formation as a difficult-to-cut material:less than 30 degree rake angle tools offered unstable chip formation which means alternating change in the cutting forces at the same depth of cut :unstable chip formation resulted in chipping of tool edge.

We present the first optimal output-sensitive algorithm for computing Reeb graphs of orientable 2-manifold meshes without boundary. While there exists an optimal output-sensitive algorithm for simply connected domains, there was no known such algorithm for non-simply connected domains, as far as we know. Our algorithm first removes all regular vertices using edge contractions and then contract contours using edge flips. It is simple, fast and easy to implement.
