We have been trying to grow c-BN films using rf magnetron sputtering of a pyrolytic BN target. Although it has been considered that the c-BN films don't grow without using Ar+N2 mixed sputtering gas, we have recently found that the films containing c-BN phase can be grown with pure Ar gas when a lower negative bias voltage was applied than for mixed gas. Further systematic investigation of deposition conditions for c-BN film growth using pure Ar gas are underway.

UV irradiation or oxygen plasma exposure of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was performed as pretreatment of liquid phase deposition (LPD) of TiO2 or SiO2. ATR/FT-IR analysis of the pretreated MWCNT suggests that the UV irradiated surface was oxidized whereas the surface was not oxidized through oxygen plasma exposure. It was found that complete coating was achieved by the sufficient plasma exposure, as a result of FE-SEM observation of MWCNTs on which TiO2 or SiO2 is deposited by LPD method after the pretreatment. Aluminum alloy composites are fabrecated using the MWCNTs coated with SiO2 by LPD after the plasma exposure as compound filler.

Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) have many advantages for examples, a high power-to-weight ratio and a high degree of safety, in contrast to electric motors. However, their significant nonlinear characteristics limit their positioning accuracies. This paper describes a practical controller design for precision positioning of PAM systems and experimental results of the control system designed using the method. As the first step of this research, a linear motion mechanism with a pair of McKibben PAMs is constructed and its static and dynamic input-output characteristics are examined experimentally. Next, for precision positioning, the practical controller design procedure is discussed and determined based on the characteristics. The proposed controller design procedure can be easily implemented into PAM mechanisms without an exact dynamic model. The experimental results using the designed controller show that the positioning error is lower than 1 μm.

Extremely smooth surface and high polishing rate are required for polishing of sapphire substrates for LED. In this study, we synthesized the composite abrasives that composed of SrTiO
3 and SiO
2 in order to develop the suitable abrasives for AC electric polishing of sapphire substrates. The developed abrasives showed higher polishing rate than a commercial colloidal silica slurry under the same polishing conditions of AC electric polishing.

Redox of Ce
4+/Ce
3+ would play a major role for softening glass surface. Oxidation-reduction potential of the redox reaction would be an index of chemical polishing, but there is few data that clarify electrical properties during polishing. We then investigate electrical conductivity at the interface of glass/abrasives during polishing. The conductivity was increased with increasing rotation rate and the polishing would increase concentration of electron or ions at the interface.

Feasibility of Alkylene oxide adduct ester(AO-Ester) as cutting lubricant was empirically studied. The AO-ester indicated not only enhanced flame retardance but also same lubricity as existing ester cutting fluid. In same cutting conditions, it suggested high lubricity due to enhanced adsorption ability of increase into added polar group.
