Silicon carbide (SiC) has been widely used in high temperature, high frequency, high power devices and other electronic fields. However, it is difficult for traditional machining method as its characteristics of high wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and high brittleness. In this paper, the electrochemical machining characteristics of SiC material were experimentally investigated under different electrical parameters and electrolytic solution. Also, the results and the machining conditions suitable for SiC machining were discussed.

In electrochemical machining (ECM), it is widely believed that the current efficiency of NaCl is 100% and does not depend on the pulse duration. Moreover, it is also known that the current efficiency of NaNO3 is not 100%. Through the experiments, it was found that the current efficiency of NaNO3 as well as NaCl depended upon the pulse duration and in case of NaCl, it reduced as the pulse duration was shortened. In this study, the reason for the above behavior of the electrolytes is investigated. Simulation was performed considering the ion transport equations and reactions to study the reason of such dependence of current efficiency on various factors like pulse duration, voltage or current applied, flow rate etc.

When polishing workpiece with sudden dimension or shape change with ECM process, the surface roughness at corner area is found much poorer than that of other areas. This paper is aimed at getting a reasonable interpretation of this phenomenon and obtaining possible solutions to the problem. The effect of possible influence factors, such as shape of the workpiece and tool electrode, the electrolyte flow pattern, inter electrode gap (IEG), machining by-products, etc., were considered. Simulations of current density distribution, electrolyte flow field distribution, bubble distribution were carried out. It was found that the current density distribution on the electrode surface is not only depend on the gap size between electrodes, but also affected by the geometry of the tool electrode and workpiece.

The production systems of today are required to meet changing market conditions. To date, most conventional flexible systems depend on human flexibility. However, the demand for flexible automation systems is increasing owing to rising labor costs and quality requirements, even in emerging countries. To implement automation systems in the current unpredictable market, cost reduction is essential to reduce the investment risk. However, there is no systematic design method for reducing the cost of automation systems. In this study, we propose a new design method wherein we focus on eliminating the waiting time of material handling equipment by allocating multiple operations to the equipment.

In the case of free-form measurement machine, a conventional stitching calculation method gives a serious calculation error because the measured data are sparse 3D points. So, we have developed a new stitch algorithm named ARSA (Approximated Reference Shape Algorithm). This paper investigates a method to correct the Z systematic error by measuring the planar work piece in six positions. Simulation showed that the systematic error can be measured on the order of nanometers even when the planar work has a micrometer-order shape error and ripple error.

In recent years, the CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) quickly has been spreading in the manufacturing industry. With this phenomenon, the environmental condition and installation site of CMMs has been changed from the temperature control room to the workshop environment and the production line without air conditioning. However, even in severe environment the demand to high accuracy measurements by CMM has been enhancing still more. Therefore, the methods to evaluate and realize the high accuracy measurements by CMM in workshop environment have been investigated. In this paper, we clarify the factor of scale error and propose the effect and correction method of temperature measurement errors using dimensional difference of Low-expansion Step Gauge.

The graduation surface of a high accurate linear scale supported by two points partially stretches or shrinks due to its dead weight. The following results are obtained theoretically. There is no change of graduation at two ends of linear scale and two turning points of the inclination angle. Maximum stretching and shrinking graduations occur at two supporting points and at the central position of the linear scale respectively. Cumulative stretch or shrinkage of the graduation surface changes cumulative shrinkage or stretch at two turning points of the inclination angle. Practical calculation is done about Mitutoyo length reference standard HL-500, and the characteristics are clarified depending on different supporting positions.

We consider that profile shape evaluation by detecting tangential angles of the profile is competent for precise evaluation of large objects. We proposed methods using a gyro for detecting the angles, and had already demonstrated that a rate offset, a random walk, and a scale factor, which are error factors caused by the gyro, can be eliminated by using a gyro being rotated around an axis perpendicular to its sensitive axis. Here, we evaluate alignment errors for the gyro rotation.

The small aspheric surface has been widely used in many fields, such as mobile phone lens. There are high demands for measuring the surface precisely. Three conventional methods, Interferometry method, Displacement sensor method, Slope sensor method, have trouble in the point of accuracy, efficiency and profile limitation. This study proposes the method that is independent on these three troubles and new sensor for this experiment. New sensor detects angle by multi-beam, and this paper proposes new measuring instrument that can measure surface with micrometer scales accuracy.
