One of the important functions for the public transportation system is high-accuracy “stopping control”, which stops vehicles at appropriate positions on platforms for smooth boarding and alighting. Conventionally, self-localization for stopping control has been realized by detecting wayside markers for exclusive use with accompanying expensive installation costs. To reduce installation costs of stopping control, we propose a new self-localization method by using image Processing technology. This paper reports system concept and feasibility
studies of the proposed method with 1/10 scale vehicle experiment and some computer simulations. As a result, the new method could meet the accuracy requirement of stop-position error within 1 meter.
