The permselectivity of chloride and sulfate ions was examined at 30°C with the use of a seven compartment cell. Each compartment of the cell was separated from others alternately with cation or anion exchange membrane. The concentrating compartments were filled with the solution of 0.1 N-NaNO
3, and then the mixed solution of NaCl with Na
2SO
4 was fed into the diluting compartments. After an electrodialysis was completed, both the ions of the solution in the central concentrating compartment were determined.
The permselectivity of the sulfate ion against the chloride ion was much lower than the unity, but it increased in general when the concentration of chloride ions was decreased or when the current density was increased.
It is considered appropriate to measure the permselectivity of anion exchange membranes under such conditions that the concentration of chloride ions is more than 0.5 N and the current is in the range of 0.5-2.0 A/dm
