Sea-water and concentrated sea-water are shallowly (depth2-4cm) reserved in the pols which are the main parts of the salt-field and built of soil at the seashore.
These pools consis of the evaporation pools for concentrating sea-water till it is saturated with sodium chloride and the crystallization pools for crystallizing sodium chloride from the saturated scution. The soil foundation of any Tool must he compacted for preventing the leakage of water and as for the crystallization pool, specially hardened for gathering salt in the mother liuor.
(1) We measured the degree of compaction and hardening by the Tamura's falling-type hardness-meter.
(2) Hardness was measured by the: penetration depth into the soil foundation of pools.
(3) The penetration deaths for evaporation pools in the Ex-Kanto Salt Research Laboratory Salt-field were in the range from 6 to 28 cm and those for crysallization pools from 3.5 to 8cm.
(4) In the same salt-field, there is generally significant differences between the penetration de th for the evaporation pool and that for the crystallization pool.
(5) It could not be guaranteed that the aoil foundation of the same pool was in the equally compacted and hardened state.
(6) There was such case as the last pool was more compacted than the first one and also the reveree case about the evaporation pools which were placed in a row.
(7) The sample coefficients of variation were in the range from 1.2 to 15.4% and the sample mean was 7.7%. It was decided that measurement could be carried into effect with no sacrifice of precision for any penetration depth.
