Glacial-Interglacial alloformation during the last 500 kyr was found in the 110m long sediment cores drilled at the central part of the Uwa basin, SW Shikoku, Japan. Nine dated tephra layers enabled us to establish a precise age model for the core sediment for the last 500 kyr. Total Organic Carbon, TOC/TN (Total Nitrogen) ratio, grain size distribution, magnetic susceptibility, and lightness, L* were measured and used for multi-proxies, which indicate the core stratigraphic sequence contains at least six lake cycles associated with glacial cycles of the oxygen-isotope stratigraphy. Six pluvial periods with lake deposits can be correlated with MIS 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13, while drier periods with soils and/or peat layers with MIS 2, 6, 8, 10 and 12. These imply that sea-level drop in the glacial periods provided much drier climate to the SW Shikoku.

Arunachal Pradesh is located near Bhutan and Tibet and is the home for 22-24 ethnic groups (51 groups if segmentalized). This study reports the vegetation and the traditional forest managements in the Derang Dzoneg area.
1. The fallen leaves of oak trees are important for agriculture for the reason that they are used as manure in cultivated lands.
2. The fallen leaves are used for the nutrient for barley (below 1970m in altitude) and buckwheat (1790-2000m in altitude) as well as for suppression of weeds.
3. Depending on accessibility from settlements and conditions of utilizations, the forests in the Derang Dzong area are classified into the following three categories:
1) "Soeba Shing" (the forest for collecting the fallen leaves);
2) "Borong" ("Untouched forest": the forest for collecting the firewood); and,
3) "Moon" ("Deep forest": the forest for getting the building materials and the hunting area)
Management methods differ among these three types of forests. In particular, "Soeba Shing" near settlements are kept artificially as pure oak forests through tight controls based on traditional practices.
4. The fallen leaves of oak trees are important property for people, and are not exchanged basically among them, hence, every farmer owns "Soeba Shing".
5. "Moon", in line with the times, change to the secondary forests, "Borong", consisting of many pine trees (Lensong Shing: Pinus wallichiana) through logging along with increased accessibility from settlements.
6. While lands of "Soeba Shing" are privately owned, and those of "Borong" and "Moon" are possessed by clans. The utilizations of forests are, hence, done only by individual owners in "Soeba Shing", and by members of clans with ownerships in "Borong" and "Moon".

Abstract
This study investigates the regional differences in the land use change since 2000 inInner Mongolia, China, in relation to the environmental policies and urbanization. An analysis ofthe land use combination in each county reveals regional differences in the land use type withinInner Mongolia. The trend of change in land use between 2000 and 2005 can be summarizedusing factor analysis into the following four patterns: urbanization, increasing arable land anddecreasing forest, expansion of farm land, and land degradation. Based on the factor scores, 89counties in Inner Mongolia are classified using cluster analysis into four types of regions in termsof the land use change. The results indicate the following. Urbanized area is distributed in andaround existing major cities. Counties with relatively little land use change are found in thenorthern or northeastern region. The effect of the farmland afforestation policy is observed in theagro-pastoral region where non-irrigated fields have been converted into woodlands or grasslands.Desertification and soil alkalization have taken place in the drainage basin of the Yellow River andthe periphery of the desert.
