The performance evaluation and the mix designing of self-compacting conrete should be approached on the basis of rheology in which fresh concrete is modeled as a Bingham plastic fluid with two parameters of yield value and plastic viscosity. In this paper, the constitutive equations explaining the flow of self-compacting concrete around a cyrindrical bar are induced by the application of Stokes' approximation to the Bingham plastic fluid. Theoretical discussion and experimental investigation using resin mortar led to not only proving the validity of the equations but also devising a method for quantitatively evaluating the behavior of self-compacting concrete flowing around a reinforcing bar from the rheological standpoint.

Sealing compound is used at the joints of stone cladding for waterproofing requirements. However, dark discoloration and pattern staining of the joint area have been occurring. Therefore, this research was made to quantitatively evaluate the effects on the joint area of sealing compound type, joint direction, and stain removal by cleaning to make the staining problem clear. The following information was obtained : i. Adequate evaluation of staining due to sealing compound was made by measurements of color differences and glossiness of stone and microscopic observation of undesirable substance on stone. It was quantitatively confirmed that compared to other sealing compounds, silicone based sealing compound caused staining remarkably. ii. Staining of stone due to silicone based sealing compound was prominent in the area below horizontal joints and silicone oil propagation on the stone surface was of a more dominant transfer mechanism than diffusion. iii. Decrease in color differences and increase in glossiness due to cleaning were noted confirming staining removal effect but tendency for increased staining due to exposure after cleaning was observed. The reason for this was that the stone surface was newly exposed due to cleaning. The knowledge and findings obtained in this research are essential information for the quality of stone work.

This paper investigated the possibility of designing a shape for aerodynamic vibration control of a building using several different characteristics of aerodynamic instability of different shapes for each wind direction. Experiments were conducted using different characteristics, especially for galloping and vortex induced vibration, on a square prism with and without comer recessions. The differential is as the galloping occurs at the square prism when wind acts normal to the prism, and vortex induced vibration with great response displacements occurs at the square prism with comer recessions when wind acts aslant to the model. On the other hands, relationships between with aerodynamic instability and wind force were investigated with part of the wind force on several levels of models. Then, it is clarified that wind force which act on the upper part of the square prism greatly influences the occurrence of galloping when wind acts normal to the model. And it is also clarified that the middle part of the layers of square model with the comer recessions greatly influences vortex induced vibration when wind acts aslant to the model. Therefore, a model as a combined of them are proposed to control the aerodynamic instability, taking account of those parts of the wind force on each layer against wind actions. The proposed model has square in the low 5/8 and square with the comer recessions in the upper 3/8 of it. Thus, great response displacements caused with aerodynamic instability can be prevented or reduced in all wind directions.

In this paper, elastic-plastic dynamic response analysis of multi-story vibrational models with eccentricity are carried out. From results of analyses, it was concluded that the optimum strength distribution of eccentric structures can be obtained by means of modal analysis. In structures having general (not optimum) strength distribution, damage concentration can be estimated by the defference between the actual strength distribution of the structure and its optimum strength distribution.

All aluminum single layered reticular dome is expected to be a suitable construction system for large span dome structures, because of characteristics such as a high strength and stiffness to weight ratio. Regarding the aluminum ball joints of single layered reticular domes, the authors have researched the bending stiffness and strength through structural testing and numerical simulation as discussed in a previous paper. As a result, this type of connection, with semi-rigidity, was confirmed to perform stable hysteresis. This study deals with the structural behavior of the unit reticular dome, making use of aluminum ball joints. In order to clarify the buckling behavior of such a unit dome, structural testing and analyses are executed with varied parameters : the subtended half angle and the slendeniess ratio. Through these structural tests and analyses, a yielding interaction formula for such aluminum ball joints is obtained, and further an effective coefficient for the bending stiffness of the connection is found in order to simulate the actual behaviors of such unit domes.

Cable made by bundling fine high tensile strength materials has flexibility and the strength to weight ratio is high. Also a great advantages of cable is that there is no limit to the length of members from a manufacture and a transportation view point. When applying cables to structures, it is effective to use the "middle clamp jointing method" in order to make the best economical use of both the properties of cables and their advantages over other materials. This method, in which other members are connected to the middle part of a cable, has the most distinctive characteristic that a single long cable can be used continuously without being cut at the clamping part unless absolutely necessary. This paper proposes a design method for a metal fittings for the cable structures by carrying out both experiments and analyses on the following items. (1) Principal factors for the design of metal fittings used for the middle clamp jointing. (2) A method for establishing an appropriate safety factors for the metal fittings of cable.

In the present paper, the buckling behavior of box-shaped, pultruded fiber reinforced polymetric members under axial compression is investigated. For long-columns, elastic general buckling behavior has first been observed, and ultimate stresses are in good agreement with Euler buckling criterion. At a large deflection equilibrium state, it is shown to observe periodically wavy buckling dents at its compression flange. The ultimate stresses for short-columns are in good agreement with the local buckling criterion obtained by using the present orthotropic thin-walled plate buckling theory. The acoustic emission measurement has suggested that the collapse is started from the micro-damage caused by the development of elastic local buckling dent.

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of a seismic isolation system on the responses of the space frame structures where hysteresis dampers are installed to reduce the responses due to horizontal earthquake motion. This system is applied to a latticed dome with about 300m span, and dynamic response analysis of the system is carried out to illustrate the effectiveness. From the results of the numerical studies with dome, it is confirmed that the seismic isolation system with hysteresis dampers effectively suppress the vertical and horizontal acceleration responses of the dome subjected to horizontal earthquakes.

In this paper, we carried out loading test and finite element analysis, and studied the behavior of partial compression perpendicular to grain considering the distance from the end of member to the bearing area, the depth of member and the bearing length in order to investigate suitability of the allowable partial compressive stress perpendicular to grain of Japanese standard for member with large cross-sectional area like Heavy Timber. As a result, we clarified that the allowable partial compressive stress perpendicular to grain of Japanese standard wasn't reasonable for the actual behavior of partial compression perpendicular to grain, and suggested new leading method using modulus of apparent elasticity, strain-energy and the ratio between depth of member arid bearing length as the parameter, and the concrete numerical value for the allowable partial compressive stress perpendicular to grain.

This study was carried out to investigate an influence of form of shear key put on a wall-beam joint of precast concrete structure, especially a ratio of length to height of its bottom and side gradient, on its shear strength and failure pattern. This study was constiuued by finite element analysis and shear loading experiment. From FEM analysis, it was observed that shear strength and relations between shear force and slip dislocation of joint was influenced by form of shear key, and failure characteristics of shear key were influenced not only by ratio of length to height of its bottom but also by side gradient of shear key. From shear loading experiment, the same results were obtained.

The purpose of this study is to grasp the possibility of using recycled aggreate concrete in the reinforced concrete structures. Using recycled aggreate in full to a beam member, the seismic performance of this member was compared with that of normal concrete member through the tests concerning flextural, shear and bond. The parameters of the tests were failure mode and concrete compressive strength. From the test results, the failure mode can be predicted and the seismic performance of RC members with recycled aggregate concrete were the same as those of the normal RC members. Futheremore, it was found that the strengths of the RC members with recycled aggregate concrete can be calculated as a safty side by previous strength equations.

Brittle fracture in steel frames during an earthquake is triggered by a ductile crack initiated at a hot spot of inevitable discontinuities encountered at steel connections. Such a hot spot is subjected to a severe strain concentration as well as a high stress triaxiality. The capacity of global strain over the whole section which is susceptible to fracture is an important source of member ductility beyond the elastic limit to survive a destructive earthquake. It is knwon that the global strain capacity prior to the initiation of a ductile crack is governed by the stress triaxiality and strain concentration factors at the hot spot. Finite element analyses in this study enumerate the data on these factors for typical steel connections under a plane strain condition which provide conservative information for fracture control design.

This paper describes the behavior of joint panels in circular hollow section (CHS) column to beam connections. Eleven connection sub-assemblages were tested to investigate the behavior of joint panels. In addition to the tests, finite element analyses (FEA) were performed to complement the test results. The variables of this study are column diameter to thickness ratio (D/t), aspect ratio of joint panel (H/D) and with/without transverse beam (T.B.). During the test, it has been found, the joint panel with larger D/t ratio (D/f=37,48) failed according to shear buckling, and transverse beam contributes to prevent the buckling. The yield strength of joint panel is predictable by a conventional formula based on the shear flow theorem. Also, the full plastic strength of joint panel gives good agreement to the tests results.

This paper deals with the friction-type joints using F10T,M16 high-strength bolts. To clarify the hysteresis characteristics under overstress, the monotonic tensile tests (T Series), the monotonic tensile tests (DT Series) after the dynamic tests under a constant-amplitude stress-cycling condition and the dynamic tests (D Series) under a constant-amplitude strain-cycling were conducted. The test parameter are the magnitude of the initial clamping force, the loading amplitude and the rate of the slip strength to the yield strength of the joint. The slip strength, the effect of the friction force in the joint behavior and the fracture mode are discussed. And then the relationship between the slip strength of the joints and the yield strength of the connected member, the fluctuation characteristics of slip strength and the bolt tension are investigated.

Recently, various kinds of hysteretic steel dampers have been developed for the purpose of response control of building structures during seismic excitation. The more effectively the dampers are designed, the more earlier the dampers yield even under wind load. So, there is some anxiety about fatigue damage of dampers induced by wind response fluctuation. In this paper, low cycle fatigue and high cycle fatigue damages of dampers equipped to tall buildings are evaluated under across-wind fluctuation, based on the results of low cycle fatigue test of shear yielding type sub-column dampers made of extra low yield stress steel, and distribution of strain response of dampers obtained by time history response analysis in addition to stochastic method using Rayleigh stribution function as a probability density function.

We carried out the cyclic compression loading test of the expansive concrete filled steel tube with a flat bar in center to be used for the brace member of the energy dissipative braced frame to improve the mechanical characteristics of the tube as the brace member. The results of this experiment may be summarized as follows : 1) This tube has very high stiffness to compression load. 2) The bond strength betweeen the flat bar and the concrete is about 10MPa except for the both end parts of the tube. 3) The apparent initial stiffness of the concrete in the tube is about 43〜47GPa.

This paper describes the structural potential of various end connections to concrete filled tubes (CFT) which are used as axial force resistant members under earthquake loads. An alternatively repeated axial loading test was conducted for CFT members which were jointed at both ends by flange joint connections, flat gusset plate connections, or cruciform gusset plate connections. The CFT member was made of a cold formed steel tube with the diameter to thickness ratio of 20, 30 or 50 and normal concrete of the compression strength 30 MPa. The test has revealed that every connection has a potential to bring out the full structural capacity of CFT members, although connections would be imposed the repeated axial forces and also severe bending moments by cyclic flexural buckling of the members.

In AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan) design formula for slender composite columns, modified method of the superposed strength of a column section is adopted by considering the effect of additional bending moment (Pδ moment). In a previous paper, with respect to the ultimate strength of concrete filled steel tubular columns, we proposed the end moment (_cM_u)-axial force (_cM_u) interaction relations of concrete columns on the basis of an analytical results. The equation for the _cM_u-_cN_u relations, however, is considerably complicated. In this paper we proposed more simple equation and show that maximum strengths are well predicted by using the proposed _cM_u-_cN_u relations.

This paper discusses the floor vibration analysis by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz method for the aid of structural design. In the analysis, many factors to represent various structural types of building floor are considered for the rectangular plate. The primary discussions are as follows : 1) The practicality of the analysis is confirmed in comparison with the measured values. 2) The effective mass of the rectangular plate is represented under the various boundary conditions. 3) The sensitivity analysis is performed in the analysis for the first natural frequency of the floor. 4) The analysis is applied to the three-dimensional problem concerning the propagation of floor vibration. As a consequence, it is clarified that the analysis is helpful for the structural designers because of the accuracy and convenience.
