      Ductile cast irons having different graphite nodule numbers were hot rolled at about 900°C and their matrices were ferritized. With increasing draft percentage up to 70%, the thermal and electrical conductivities in the rolling direction increase and the former in the direction normal to the rolling surface decreases, while Young's modulus and damping capacity remain unchanged. With elevating temperature, thermal conductivity increases and both electrical conductivity and Young's modulus decrease, while damping capacity hardly changes. The temperature dependence of these properties is unsusceptible to rolling. A number of cracks are formed in the rolled cast irons with a draft percentage 80% or more, resulting in a decisive deterioration of these properties as well as tensile strength and elongation. The graphite nodule number has influence not so significant to these properties.

      Spheroidal graphite cast irons having different toughness were prepared by changing chemical constituents such as Si and P. A dry machining test of the S.G. irons ferritic annealed was carried out to estimate the tool life under the conditions of; test bar 200 mm in outer diameter, 160 mm in inner diameter and 250 mm in length, WC-Co sintered tool, depth of cut 2.0 mm, feed rate 0.4 mm/rev., and cutting speed 100 to 280 m/min. Si improves the machinability by lowering the toughness with the same hardness. The tool life for 3.4%Si S.G. iron, for instance, is about 5 times longer than that for 2.4%Si S.G. iron. The influenece of P on machinability is recognized not so clearly because of the minute variation in content, i.e. between 0.0027 and 0.063%.

      A carbon-free Fe-Si-Mn alloy having the same matrix structure as that of spheroidal graphite iron was prepared as a reference material. Spheroidal graphite was gradually increased in the alloy. Low temperature impact tests were made on the alloys having different amounts of spheroidal graphite. Spheroidal graphite shifts the impact energy transition temperature to the lower side. When the graphite increases in amount, the fracture surface transition temperature and the temperature range in which a white brittle fracture surface appears and a high impact value is obtained are lowered with increasing the amount of graphite. Such the transition depends on twinning stress. The temperature dependence of twinning stress shifts down to a lower temperature range with the increase in amount of spheroidal graphite. These effects obey the suppcession mechanism of spheroidal graphite against the appearance of deformation twinning.

      Wet rolling wear tests of mottled cast irons having different matrix hardness were performed using Nishihara-type wear tester to elucidate the influenece of eutectic carbide and graphite in the matrix on the rolling contact fatigue strength. The matrix hardness was controlled by heat treating. The mottled cast iron has lower rolling contact fatigue endurance limits than alloy steels having the same structure as the mottled cast iron. The tendency gets stronger as the amount of graphite and matrix hardness increase. The rolling contact fatigue endurance limit of mottled cast iron is decided by a combined effect of material defects of eutectic carbide and graphite. Cracks propagate along the eutectic carbide-matrix boundary and also through graphites, penetrate down to the vicinity of the region where the stress value calculated on the basis of the maximum shearing stress theory and then propagate in the direction parallel to the contact surface.

      The nucleation behavior of the hypoeutectic Fe-C-Si-S alloys to which small amounts of various types of SiO2 powders had been added was investigated by determining the number of dendrite grains, mean area of dendrite elements and degree of supercooling at the start of austenite solidification. The melt to which α-quartz or α-cristobalite has been added has high nucleating potency for austenite, while that to which quartz glass has been added and that free from additives have low potency. Crystalline SiO2 is an effective catalyst for austenite nucleation. The number of nuclei corresponds to the amount of suspending crystalline SiO2 particles. The nucleating potency is moderated in the melt in which S content has been increased. The minimum crystallographic disregistries of β-quartz, β-tridymite and β-cristobalite to austenite are caluculated as 4.0, 3.3 and 2.7% respectively, justifying the heterogeneous nucleation theory.
