      The behaviors of molten steel flow in the mold during pouring were firstly studied in comparison with the quality of the products in a manner of reproducing the pouring status in case of a reaction fin casting by a water model test. Secondly, the further investigations for the improvement of molten steel flow in the mold were made by the water model method, and their data were applied to actual pouring operations with significant improvement of the casting quality, which verified the validity of the water model method to the examination of the molten steel flow in the mold in large steel castings with thin wall.

      Anomalous graphite structure such as unevenness of graphite at the graphite-matrix interface forms in the cast iron containing vanadium and titanium. The formation process of uneven graphite structure was investigated by the directional solidification method. Vanadium and titanium in the cast iron affected the stacking of graphite on the graphite basal plane. Unevenness of graphite structure was led by the disorder of stacking in the eutectic solidification stage and it was promoted during the cooling process from eutectic temperature to room temperature. The graphites at eutectic cell boundaries were more anomalous than those in the eutectic cells, because vanadium and titanium segregated at eutectic cell boundaries. Short and thick graphites were also observed at eutectic cell boundaries. This may be related to the segregation of vanadium and titanium.

      This paper describes a study of effects of titanium contents and heat treatment conditions on the tensile strength, elongation, bending strength, deflection, impact toughness and compression strength of the eutectic graphite cast irons modified by the graphite granularizing treatment. In the iron containing 0.03%Ti, improvements of mechanical properties through the heat treatments for graphite granularizing treatment were less than those of specimens containing Ti more than 0.13%. Evident improvements of mechanical properties were obtained in specimens which contained 0.13∼0.23%Ti and were heat-treated at temperatures over 1,000°C. Mechanical properties except bending strength increased with the progress of the granularizing of graphite, that is, the decrease of graphite flake length. According to the regression analysis, there appeared strong corelation between mechanical properties and graphite flake length. The apparent difference was detected in fracture surfaces of specimens before and after granularizing treatment. The metallurgical fracture morphology was hardly found in the former. On the other hand, the cleavage fracture in ferrite grains was observed in the latter and its area on the fracture surface increased with graphite granularization.

      A simplified three-dimensional method for simulating the solidification of castings is proposed. In the first place, the parts which have to be simulated by three-dimensional method is isolated from the main body and an equivalent two-dimensional latent heat Lt is imposed on them, where Lt=L√t3/t2, t2 and t3 are two- and three- dimensional solidification times, respectively. Then these parts can be simulated together with the main body by the two-dimensional method.

      Al-8%Pb-Cu and Al-8%Pb-4%Si alloy ingots were produced by casting into a movable metal mold with water spraying, and tehir cooling and solidification processes were clarified by thermal analysis. To obtain ingots with no gravity segregation of Pb and uniform dispersion of fine Pb phase, it was required that the narrow ranges of L1+L2 liquids and semi-molten states move quickly from the bottom to the top of the mold at the speed which is apporoximately equal to the moving speed of the mold. It was important that the temperature gradient was steep in both the higher temperature range of the L1+L2 region in which the diffusion growth of L2 phase is dominant and the lower temperature range in which the coalescing growth appeared. Therefore, it is recomended for casting ingots of hyper-monotectic Al-Pb system alloys that the diameter of ingots is 40mm, the mold speed is 1.0mm/s, the thickness of coating is as thin as possible and the casting temperature is just above the L1+L2 separating temperature.

      The effect of mischmetal addition on the as-cast structure of high Mn-steel was investigated by measuring the grain size of austenitic structure, size of dendrite element and degree of supercooling at the start of solidification in a Tammann furnace. The grain size of austenitic structure becomes finer and the size of dendrite element in each austenitic grain becomes coarser with increasing mischmetal addition. The degree of supercooling becomes less with increasing mischmetal addition. It is proved that the mischmetal addition is effective in promoting heterogeneous nucleation.
