The objective of this paper was to examine multiculturalism as a subject content of Japanese home economics by reviewing its author’s research into Canadian home economics and research on the practice of multiculturalism in home economics classes. The author’s research started with a project to look into Canadian families, home economics curriculum, and actual lessons on families at secondary schools in the province of British Columbia, Canada. After conducting research projects on two subjects; ‘Career and Life Management’ and ‘Career and Technology Studies’ in the province of Alberta, Canada, and further on university students' life skill comparison between Japan and Canada, the author’s research focus was placed on the cultural diversity of families in Canada. Based on examining curricula and textbooks used in the provinces of British Columbia and Ontario, Canada, revealing issues Japanese teachers are confronting, and observing classes and interviewing teachers in the provinces of British Columbia, Canada, multiculturalism lessons for Japanese home economics classes were developed and put into practice at Japanese junior high schools. As a result of the continuous research projects, multiculturalism as Japanese Home Economics Education content is essential for children to live their present and future lives in “the world as home”.

On the other hand, the scores were lower for understanding the values and relationships of the academic fields that were the background of home economics education, devising lessons linked to social resources that support learning, and teaching using ICT. 3. Many people think of the subject as a subject that comprehensively and practically teaches about human life centered on family life, and the same tendency was seen between the faculties and among age groups. 4. While there was a common view of learning, there was a difference in the perception of learning content that is emphasized in home economics between the faculties and among age groups.
