The purpose of this study is to present the reality of teaching practice of housing in junior and senior high schools. Our findings are as follows. 1. 90% of teachers had taught about housing in junior high school, and 75% had taught in senior high school. 2. Even if the total number of class hours set by the current course of study is provided, the number of hours to covered for the housing area in junior and senior high schools is small. The number of class hours designated by the current course of study is not enough to carry out the compulsory teaching practice. It is necessary to increase the total number of class hours of home economics. 3.In junior high school, teachers in small-scale schools, teachers without the license of the home economics course, and inexperienced teachers don't cover enough about the fundamental contents, such as "meaning of housing" and "living healthy and comfortably". The necessity of providing training about sessions of a housing domain to such teachers is high. 4. In senior high school, the teachers who learned in the faculty of education are more likely to cover the basic contents of "housing and family" compared to those who learned in the faculty of home economics. Improvements are also necessary for the teacher training curriculum in the faculty of home economics. 5. In both junior and senior high schools, the content such as challenges of life today is taught in non-home economics and non-housing classes. Connecting these courses to home economics is a topic for future research.

The present study aimed to verify the efficacy of experiential learning activities in home economics education by surveying university students, analyzing their familiarity with knowledge and skills, and clarifying other related issues. It was found that practical classes previously provided during home economics learning experiences such as cooking and sewing, left a strong impression on students. However, sewing classes generated a strong sense of aversion, and provided little familiarity with basic skills. The present findings indicate the need for revised teaching to facilitate the acquisition of basic skills and knowledge during limited class hours and to instill the desire to apply these skills.

This research is aimed to clarify the role and the problem of home economics when teaching food education as a subject in Japan. For the first stage of the development, we considered the current state of food education in elementary school and the logical roles of home economics by analyzing of governmental standards, the course of studies, and the textbooks. In elementary school, food education is usually taught by the homeroom teachers through out the whole school, and the school lunch is created to coordinate with them. However, topics that centered on home economics that are forced to teach the contents of school lunch are not structured because there is no legal standard. The lesson development about "selection of food" that was part of the 2008 fiscal year study, shows a lack of sufficient data in order for home economics to play a role.

The purpose of this research is to examine the views of home economics education professors as advisers in open home economics classes at an university affiliated school. Professors of home economics education from 56 national universities responded to an e-mail questionnaire from July to September 2010. Ninety-five responses were analyzed. The results are as follows; 1. At the open home economics class, respondents gave the first consideration to the classroom teacher and second, to the participants. 2. Concerning "effective advice," giving basic knowledge of home economics education was the most frequent response. 3. "Poor information" and "little consideration to the classroom teacher" were mentioned as unreasonable comments. Finally we suggest that it is necessary to maintain close communication between university and its affiliated school.
