JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSFollowing the first and second papers, this study examined the examples of activities and ways of development of the Future Homemakers of America. The results are as follows : 1. Members tackled the various activities; for example, FHA/HERO Week, research, service and social activities. 2. FHA included individual projects, group projects, community projects and chapter projects and so on. 3. The themes, which were extensive and characteristic, were related to the home economics curriculum. 4. Using the symbolized signs, members identified concerns, set their goals, formed a plan, acted and evaluated; such steps being useful in executing projects.View full abstractDownload PDF (569K) -

JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSHomemaking education after women teachers' society became organized as a union, and homemaking education had been made compulsory was investigated and the following results were obtained. 1. Policy of suiting the subjects of homemaking education to practical life and local conditions was set forth in the seventh national meeting of women teachers of elementary schools held in Kobe City. 2. The above policy spread into districts in a short period. 3. Suiting the subjects of homemaking education to practical life and local conditions was based on the following three points of view : 1) to ease the understanding by children, 2) to aim at solving the problems of local life and 3) to permeate the governmental social policy throughout the districts.View full abstractDownload PDF (730K) -

JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSThe state of homemaking education by the women Teachers' Society under the wartime structure was investigated. The following results were obtained. 1. Homemaking education aimed at securities of material resources and human resources for war. 2. In order to secure material resources, frugal housekeeping education was stressed. 3. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSThe performance of pupils in groups was studied in a cooking class, where groups were divided by pupils' character traits. Their actions were categorized by a computer-controlled classroom communication analyzer, which produces numerical statements as objective data different from the subjective and pratical evaluation method used heretofore. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSGroups of passive pupils and mixed groups of both passive and active pupils were formed in a cooking class. Analysis of the group study was done by a computer-controlled classroom communication analyzer similar to Report 1. Actions with non-verbal communication and with verbal communication were analyzed separately to study the pupils' collaboration in groups in the cooking class. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSIn searching for the actual situation in cooking and their problems of general home economics at Senior High Schools, we sent out a questionnaire to the heads of home economics and found that there were some difficulties as follows : 1. Since home economics is a required subject for girls and an elective subject for boys, it is hard to arrange a two-period school hour for the practice of cooking. So the student cannot only complete the basic techniques, but also makes it an overload for the teachers. 2. The teaching materials are based on the text book, but they overlap with those of Junior High Schools. 3. The basic techniques of cooking were not completed at the Primary or Junior High School levels, Number of students are too many to teach in one class.View full abstractDownload PDF (603K) -

JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSPreference and sense of taste of junior high school students for Japanese style soup stocks-Katsuobushi stock, Niboshi stock and stock made from MSG and 5'-IMP-were examined by sensory tests. Results were as follows : 1. Students preferred the stock made from MSG and 5'-IMP most. 2. Discriminating ability of tastes showed an increase for third grade students. 3. Students preferring Katsuobushi stock had superior discriminating ability to those preferring stock made from MSG and 5'-IMP. 4. Frequency of and preference for eating Japanese style soup as well as difference of soup stock ingredients used at students' home had no effects on discriminating ability of tastes. 5. These instructions were expected to let students know a variety of natural flavors of various foodstuffs.View full abstractDownload PDF (491K)
