JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA specimen collected at Okinawa Fish Market was identified as Synanceia horrida (Linnaeus, 1766) in having the following characters: 16 pectoral fin rays (vs. 18-19 in S. verrucosa, 14-15 in S. nana and 11 in S. alula), bony ridge continuously connecting eyes (vs. no continuous ridge in S. verrucosa, S. nana and S. platyrhynchus), and bony crest above eye (vs. no bony crest in S. verrucosa). This species is recorded here for the first time from Japan. Its occurrence in the Ryukyu Islands is the northernmost record of this species.View full abstractDownload PDF (2965K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSTwo priacanthid fishes, Priacanthus blochii Bleeker and P. fitchi Starnes, collected by set net in ca. 50m depth off the Nichinan Coast, Meitsu, Nango-cho and Miyotoura, Kushima City, Miyazaki Pref. constitute the first record and the third record with exact locality from Japan, respectively. Four specimens (214-264 mm in standard length) of P blochii and one specimen (214 mm in standard length) of P. fitchi are herein described with new Japanese names, Akane-kintoki and Usubeni-kintoki, respectively. They represent the northernmost records of both species as well as including the largest sizes recorded for each. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe freshwater fish fauna of the the Kumano Region, Mie Prefecture, central Japan, was surveyed between 31 July and 8 August 1995. A total of 1202 individuals classified into 31 species representing 9 families were collected from 18 stations (12 rivers or streams) using a casting net, hand net and small set net. Of these, Eleotris acanthopoma, Redigobius bikolanus and Mugilogobius abei were the first records from Mie Prefecture. Fishes collected in the survey comprised primary freshwater (6 spp.), diadoromous (13 spp.) and peripheral freshwater (12 spp.) species. The low number of primary freshwater fish species is a characteristic of the Kumano Region.View full abstractDownload PDF (740K) -
