TaC-WC solid solutions containing up to 40 mol% WC were prepared by heating single carbide mixtures in vacuum. And the properties of sintered specimens of these solid solutions and single carbides were studied. The results obtained are as follows.
1) When the specimens were treated above 1800°C, decarburization of specimens increased slightly. But it was suppressed by packing specimens with carbon black. Thus, it was possible to prepare solid solutions containing 95.1-98.6% carbon of theoretical value.
2) Upon furnace cooling of specimens containing more than 3lmol% WC, precipitation of finely dispersed WC was observed. It was, however, prevented completely by rapid cooling at the rate of 500-650°C/min even in specimen containing 40mol% WC.
3) Specimens containing 10, 20, 30 and 40mol% of WC were one-phased above 1580, 1780, 1960 and 2200°C respectively.
4) Transverse rupture strength, hardness, electrical resistivity and coefficient of thermal expansion of solid solutions were found to increase with increasing WC content.
Hot hardness of solid solutions above 600°C showed better resistivity against softening than single carbides.
5) The result of oxidation in still air at 700°C showed that weight gain increased slightly with increasing WC content, but in specimen containing l0mol% of WC, crumbling of scale checked the oxidation resistance markedly.
