The initial sintering process of tungsten powder compacts was studied. The compacts consist of various mixtures of coarse, medium and fine powders. The dependencies of linear shrinkage upon particle size, sintering time etc. are in good agreement with the model of "bulk diffusion" proposed by Kingery, Berg and Coble. Especially, the shrinkage. of the ternary mixture compacts are well explained by the model, however, the shrinkage of coarser powder compacts whose mixing ratios of coarse/fine are greater than 7/3 are not so well. The activation energy for the sintering process is about 86, 000 cal mol-1.

As an introductory of a broad program in which ferrite manufacturing process is investigated from the powder metallurgical point of view, the present paper gives a general consideration on the process based on the experimental results which will be reported in detail in subsequent papers.
It is shown that one of the approaches towards full understanding and adequate evaluation of the ferrite manufacturing process can be accomplished by examining the properties of ferrite powder in combination with its sintering characteristics.
Two heating processes, calcination and firing are studied referring to the properties of ferrite powder and sintered final product respectively. Some typical examples are given on the effects of calcination upon the properties of ferrite powder. Results of sintering experiments with differently processed ferrite powder samples are given also, and it is shown how densification and grain growth are affected by calcination and subsequent ball-milling.

In order to study the variables which affect the linear shrinkage of metal powder compacts during sintering, tests have been made with several types of copper and iron powders, as well as with Ni-Fe compositions, compacted and sintered under various conditions.
It has been shown that in changing these processing conditions the ratio of shrinkage in the pressing direction to that of shrinkage perpendicular to this direction may change in value from approximately 0.5 to approximately 3. The trends in these shrinkage ratio changes have been established for several variables in the powder metallurgy processing.
