    The solid solution of trirutile-type MSb2O6 (M=Cu, Zn, Mg, Co and Ni) and TiO2 with the molar rates x=0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 in (MSb2O6)x(TiO2)1-x was prepared by a solid state reaction. The results showed that the solid solutions were formed except for (MSb2O6)0.75(TiO2)0.25 (M=Mg and Co) and x=0.50 and 0.75 in (NiSb2O6)x(TiO2)1-x, and were crystallized in trirutile type structure. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy measurement for their powders indicated that the energy bandgaps were approximately 2.1 eV for (CoSb2O6)x(TiO2)1-x (x=0.125, 0.25 and 0.5), and were approximately 2.6 and 2.4 eV for (NiSb2O6)x(TiO2)1-x (x=0.125 and 0.25) and (CuSb2O6)x(TiO2)1-x (x=0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75), respectively. The photocatalytic activity for visible light was observed in (CoSb2O6)x(TiO2)1-x and (CuSb2O6)x(TiO2)1-x.

    Plastics are common insulators which cannot shield electromagnetic waves and can easily be charged by static electricity. To make conductive plastics, we propose a laminated coiled sheet shaving method. By winding of plastic and thin metal sheet herein simultaneously using a fabric manufacturing apparatus and cutting the ends we produce a plastic combined with metal fibers, of which plastics and metal fibers are found evenly distributed. The plastic/metal fibers thus obtained are put through a heated dice for melting and curing and are then cut into appropriate lengths to produce pellets for injection molding.
    Stainless steel of 3 vol% in mixing ratio was found to have a volume resistivity of approximately equal to or lower than that of the electromagnetic shields of level (100 Ω·cm). In addition, the tensile strength of the injection molding was found to be reduced within increasing the amount of metal fibers.

    PbO2 powder, which is active positive-electrode material in the lead-acid battery, was mechanically milled with Sb2O3 powder. It is well known that Sb contained in the grid of the lead-acid battery is useful for the protection of the premature capacity loss. The results of the X-ray diffraction and EPMA (Electron Probe Micro Analyzer) showed that the alloying between PbO2 and Sb2O3 proceeded during the milling process. The position of the reduction peak in the CV (Cyclic Voltammetry) curve shifted to the lower potential and the intensity of the reduction peak increased with an increase of the scanning speed of the potential. The intensity of the reduction peak in the CV curve for the electrode constructed from PbO2 powder added with Sb2O3 was much reduced compared to that for the electrode constructed from PbO2 powder. The result of EPMA showed that the reduction reaction from PbO2 to PbSO4 proceeded more rapidly in the electrode constructed from PbO2 powder added with Sb2O3, and that Sb was not detected in PbSO4 particles. The above phenomena observed in the electrode constructed from PbO2 powder added with Sb2O3 seem to be concerned with the protection of the premature capacity loss of the lead-acid battery.

    A lot of PM parts with complex and thin-walled shape have been used in automobile. Therefore, the PM parts were required to have high density and high strength. Both uniform powder filling method and high pressure powder compaction method are essential for fabrication of the PM parts with the high dimensional tolerance and high strength at low cost. At first, in order to improve the flowability of powders in a feed shoe, an aeration powder filling method has been developed by blowing a small amount of gas into the feed shoe. Next, unique warm compaction using die wall lubrication method, which was used water dispersions of lithium stearate, was developed. Net-shaping of commercial PM parts with high strength has been achieved by the application of the above methods.

    There has been a growing need in recent years for a car air-conditioner having a variable-displacement compressor. As for such a type of compressor, mechanical breaker for protecting the engine belt is required. Mechanical breaker can be realized by developing a material having high fatigue limit ratio (fatigue strength/tensile strength) and improving the stability of breaking load.
    To solve these problems, we developed the new Fe-Cu-C material and the process by which mechanical properties of the new material are very much stabilized.
    In this paper, we summarize the background and the technical contents of this development.

    The fatigue strength of the sintered and carburized compact made of the Mo hybrid-alloyed steel powder, which is based on a 0.6 mass% Mo prealloyed steel powder to which 0.2 mass% Mo powder particles have been diffusion bonded, is higher than that of the 0.6 mass% Mo prealloyed steel powder. The sintered compact made of the Mo hybrid-alloyed steel powder has a finer pore structure than that of the Mo prealloyed steel powder, because the Mo-rich region near the surface of the Mo hybrid-alloyed steel powder should exist as the α-iron phase with a high diffusion coefficient at high temperature and result in enhanced sintering. Improvement in the fatigue strength of the sintered and carburized compact made of the Mo hybrid-alloyed steel powder should result from not only the fine pore structure but also the strengthening of the sintering neck by Mo concentration around pores.

    Corrosion behavior of SUS304 stainless steels sintered in vacuum or (H2+N2) gas atmospheres with various compositions was studied by polarization curve measurement test, immersion test and 0.5 kmol·m−3 H2SO4 boiling test. The sintered density ratio of the SUS304 stainless steel specimen sintered in pure H2 gas was the highest, while it decreased with increasing N2 content in the (H2+N2) mixed gas. On the other hand, the specimen sintered in vacuum showed the second highest density ratio. And the linear relationship between sintered density ratio and N2 content was recognized. Both corrosion current densities at Ecorr and at 0.5 V in passivity state region showed the almost linear relationship against sintered density. The mass loss measured by immersion test also decreased linearly with an increase in sintered density, while that by 0.5 kmol·m−3 H2SO4 boiling test did not show the linear decrement though it decreased gradually with increasing sintered density.

    The mixtures of Type 410 stainless steel powder and the binder were injected into dumbbell type tensile test bars, and the green compacts thus obtained were subjected to pre-sintering at 873 K for 7.2 ks in the vacuum with various degrees of 0.1, 4 and 133 Pa followed by sintering at 1623 K for 7.2 ks under Ar gas flowing in the same vacuum of 0.1, 4 and 133 Pa. The Type 410 specimens sintered in vacuum of 0.1, 4, and 133 Pa were designated as Specimen 1, 2 and 3, respectively. In addition, the Type 410 specimen pre-sintered at 873 K for 7.2 ks in H2 gas and sintered at 1623 K for 7.2 ks under Ar gas flowing in the same vacuum of 0.1 Pa was also prepared. It was referred to as Specimen 1 A. By using these four specimens mentioned above, the influence of sintering atmosphere on the corrosion behavior of the Type 410 stainless steel specimen prepared by MIM process was studied. The dissolution rate of Specimen 1 A is almost same as that of Specimen 1, while Specimen 2 and 3 showed 2.15 times and 4.31 times larger dissolution rate than Specimen 1. EIS test showed that the larger the sintering vacuum degree was applied, the more anodic reaction was accelerated and the less corrosion resistance was observed. Alternate wetting and drying test clarified that Specimen 1 A had the best corrosion resistance, while Specimen 3 had the worst, which agrees well with the results of polarization curve measurement and EIS test.
