A study was made to investigate carburization of tungsten powder by H
2-CH
4. The results obtained are summarized as follows:(1) According to X-ray examination, fine tungsten powder is carburized to WC at 700°C by H
2-CH
4.(2) The thermal decomposition rate of CH
4 on the surface of tungsten powder is larger on the initial stage of carburization process, and then decreases with carburization time at the temperature range between 800-1000°C. (3) The CH
4 concentration of H
2-CH
4 mixtures on the range of CH
4/H
2=1/1-1/5 in volume have no remarkable effects on the total carbon contents of the products. (4) The thickness of the tangsten powder layer has remarkable effect on the total carbon contents of the products. (5) According to X-ray examination, the crystal lattice of WC formed between 700-1000°C are abnormal.
