    It has been generally believed hitherto that X-ray powder diffraction is not suitable for precise quantitative analysis of crystalline materials, owing to its low sensitivity for minor components with its comparatively poor SIN ratio. In this study, this difficulty was greatly reduced by using a high power X-ray diffractometer controlled precisely by a computer system. In order to confirm it, the quantitative analysis of SmCo5 magnet alloys with excess samarium than the stoichiometric composition was carried out. A small amount of Sm2Co7 phase as low as 0.1 wt% in SmCo5 powder was accurately determined by utilizing the Sm2Co7-SmCo5 calibration curve established here, in which the correlation coefficient was 99.90. Sm2Co7 have not been detected but Sm2O3 in TDK SmCo5 magnets. Moreover, the results were confirmed by other structure analysis methods such as X-ray composition image analysis, X-ray diffraction for small limited area and Auger electron spectroscopy. Their results agreed with the quantitative analysis by X-ray diffraction.

    In order to clarify the factors determining the high frequency magnetic properties of compressed iron powder cores, complex permeability was calculated and compared with measured values.
    Permeability at lower frequencies depends on the intrinsic permeability, effective demagnetization coefficient and packing fraction of iron powder particles. The effective demagnetization coefficient decreases with increasing packing fraction, and the permeability holds approximately a linear dependence on packing fraction.
    Frequency dependence of complex permeability was calculated for two cases, assuming either intraparticle or inter-particle eddy currents. The results on the basis of intra-particle eddy currents are determined by the size, packing fraction, intrinsic permeability and conductivity of iron powder particles, while in the case of inter-particle eddy currents, the apparent DC permeability and conductivity of the core are the determining factors.
    Measured values of complex permeability in the frequency range of 10 kHz-2 MHz coincide well with the calculation which gives larger core losses between the two cases. Accordingly the frequency dependency can be precisely predicted.

    Mechanical properties of the premixed adamite P/M steel have been investigated in comparison with the conventional adamite steel (1.7%C-1.2%Cr). Chromium carbide (Cr3C2) powder was mixed with adamite steel powder containing 1.7%C-1.2%Cr and then hot-isostatically pressed to a full density. During hot isostatic pressing, Cr3C2 carbide changed into Cr7C3 carbide whose size was almost twice as large as that of Cr3C2 carbide powder.
    Mechanical properties of the premixed adamite P/M steel were as follows:
    (1) The bending strength and fire cracking properties of P/M steels decreased with increasing the added content of Cr3C2 powder. However, these properties of P/M steels (6% addition) were still superior to or equivalent to those of conventional steel.
    (2) The fracture toughness of P/M steels increased with addition of Cr3C2 powder. It is worth noting that the fracture toughness of P/M steels (6% addition) was 1.4 times as high as that of conventional steel.

    TiC, Ti(C, N) and TiN layers were coated by PVD (ion plating) process at 573-853 K on HIP-treated WC-10%Co substrates, after the surface of substrate was ground or polished. The transverse-rupture strength (TRS) of specimens at room temperature and the adhesion between the layer and the substrate were mainly studied.
    The TRS of each coated specimen decreased with increasing PVD temperature. The surface state of substrate (ground or polished) did not affect the strength of each coated specimen. The specimens fractured from the coated layer, when PVD temperature was over about 773 K. However, the specimens coated at lower temperatures than 773 K were apt to fracture from the inside of substrate with no decrease in TRS. Annealing treatments of the coated specimens caused the decrease in TRS, the strength decrease being larger with decreasing PVD temperature. The results of strength tests showed that sufficient adhesion appeared to be obtained between the layer and substrate independently of PVD temperature, sort of coated layers and substrate surface-state. However, according to the results of cutting and scratch tests, the adhesion of coated layer to the ground substrate appeared to be inferior to that to the polished substrate. This was attributed to the fact that the surface of substrate changed in its quality during grinding by diamond wheel.

    The transverse-rupture strength and cutting performance of TiC coated cemented carbide were investigated as a function of thickness of β-free layer of substrate. The WC-β (N)-Co alloy (β(N) = (W, Ti, Ta) (C, N)) was used as the substrate.
    The transverse-rupture strength of the coated alloy increased with increasing thickness of β-free layer, and it attained a constant value when the thickness was over about 15μm. On the other hand, the results of interrupted turning tests showed that the resistance to impact-failure was improved with increasing thickness. Discussions on the difference in the dependencies of the strength and cutting performance on the thickness of β-free layer were given.

    The effects of annealing in N2 gas of 0.1 MPa at 1173-1673K on microstructures and room temperature transverse-rupture strength were investigated for Si3N4-10 mold%MgO-5.5 mol%Al2O3 ceramics which was cooled at the rate of 0.25-1Ks-1 after sintering in N2 gass of 0.1 MPa at 1973 K and was mainly composed of a-, β-Si3N4, MgAl2O4, Mg2SiO4 and glass phases.
    It was confirmed by the X-ray diffraction method that the glass phase became crystalline above about 1200 K in the case of isochronal annealing for 10.8 Ks; the MgSiO3 enstatite appeared by the annealing at about 1200-1500 K and the amount of MgAl2O4 spinet increased above about 1450 K. The appearance of MgSiO3 caused a sharp decrease in the strength of ceramics, while the increase in the amount of MgAl2O4 gave a little effect on the strength.
