The decay of
125Sb was investigated by using a Ge(Li) detector, NaI(Tl) and plastic scintillators. The decay scheme proposed by Mazets and Sergeenkov was confirmed. By combining the Ge(Li) data and their internal-conversion data, the K-conversion coefficients of all the gamma rays observed were deduced. Multipolarities of the 111.0, 172.0, 204.3, 208.9, 320.9 and 379.5 keV transitions were determined by the analysis of the re-measured gamma-gamma directional correlations. The 320.9, 117.3 and 111.0 transitions were found to have predominantly
E1 contents that are “
j-forbidden” in the
j-
j coupling scheme. The 444 keV beta–176.7 keV gamma delayed coincidences were measured and the half-life of the 321.1 keV state (9/2
−) was found to be (8.7±0.8×10
−10 sec. This infers that the 321.1 keV state has a significantly enhanced
E2 transition moment. The experimental results obtained are compared with the theoretical predictions based on the pairing-plus-quadrupole force, the particle-plus-phonon, and the rational models.

Cross section ratios and excitation functions for the isomeric pair
120gSb and
120mSb produced by the
121Sb(
n, 2
n) reaction have been measured in the energy range of 13–15 MeV. The experimental isomer ratios are compared with those calculated by means of the Fermi gas and superconductor models. The superconductor model seems to be valid. In a different way, the calculated values based on the Fermi gas model agree with experiments if the moment of inertia is taken to be 0.60 times the rigid-body value.

The particle size dependences of the spin flip transition temperature (Morin temperature) and of the lattice constant of α-Fe
2O
3 were studied experimentally. With decreasing particle size, it was found that the Morin temperature shifts downwards and crystal lattice expands both in
a- and
c-axis directions. As the origin of the Morin temperature shift, the change of the dipolar magnetic field due to the lattice dilatation was considered. Experimental values were compared to the theoretical calculation of Artmann and a qualitative agreement was obtained.

x ranges from 0.01 to 0.667, were studied by the measurements of magnetization, unit cell dimension, rotational hysteresis and internal field of Mn
55. Unit cell dimensions for both Mo- and W-modified Mn
3B
4 were found to increase continuously with increasing
x indicating that solid solutions are formed in this composition range. Magnetization measurements showed that Mo or W addition results in ferromagnetic part in antiferromagnetic host of Mn
3B
4. The expected value for the magnetic moment of a Mn atom on 4(
g)-site is about 1.5μ
B for all the Mn
3B
4-type compounds studied.

The Mössbauer spectra of Fe
2+ Tutton salts, which form an isomorphous series of hydrated double sulphates having the general formula Fe(MSO

+ have been studied over a temperature range from 77°–300°K. The data is analysed to assign characteristic temperatures of the
t2g levels and find their splittings. It is concluded that the ground state wave function is singlet |
xy> in all these cases. Furthermore the effect of varying electronegativity of
M has negligible effect on isomer shift.

Mössbauer spectra of naturally occurring mineral chalcopyrite have been studied over a temperature range 300°–448°K. The spectra showed a typical pattern of six absorption lines due to the internal magnetic field. The Q.S. have values which are independent of temperature whereas the magnitudes of the internal magnetic field are 325±10, 312±10 and 290±10 KOe at 300°, 373° and 448°K respectively. These features are explained by assuming that Fe atom is in a spin free, trivalent state in weak crystal field configuration. The internal field is accounted to originate primarily through the Fermi contact interaction, H
c; both the H
dip. and H
orb. contributions being zero.

Detailed analysis of a new type magnetic resonance in an Ising spin antiferromagnet is reported. It was found that in a strongly anisotropic ferro- or antiferromagnetic crystal such as CoCl
22H
2O, non-uniform magnetic resonances with the selection rule
Δm=±1, where
m is the number of spins in the short range order spin cluster directed oppositely to the majority spins, can be excited. Examples of such a non-uniform spin wave excitation, thermal excitation of the cluster and the spin-cluster resonance in CoCl
22H
2O, are discussed using a model of the one-dimentional Ising spin system. The experimental result seems to be explained more satisfactorily when a weak third neighbor interchain exchange interaction
J3 is taken into account. An extensive consideration of the spin-cluster resonance in more general Ising spin system is presented.

A simple dynamical model of interacting Ising spins is discussed. Each spin is assumed to flip spontaneously with a transition probability which depends on the temperature and the configuration of surrounding spins, but its functional form is assumed to be the simplest. The frequency-wave number dependent susceptibility χ(
q, ω) is given exactly in the one-dimensional case. In two-and three-dimensional cases the model is treated in the molecular field and the generalized approximations.

The Mössbauer spectra in iron-carbon martensite could be resolved into four components arising from the 1st, 2nd, (3, 4)th neighboring iron atoms for the carbon atoms and the remnant iron atoms. The carbon atoms were found to cause localized changes of electronic states of the surrounding iron atoms.
The internal magnetic field, isomer shift and quadrupole splitting for the first neighbors largely deviated from those for pure iron,
i.e., 265±2 KOe, −0.03±0.05 mm/sec and 0.13±0.05 mm/sec, respectively, suggesting the covalent admixture between the iron and carbon atoms.
The internal fields and isomer shifts for the 2nd and (3, 4)th neighbors also deviated slightly from those of pure iron, but with the sign opposite to those for the 1st neighbors. The quadrupole splittings for them were nearly zero, which mean that the positive charge of a carbon ion is almost screened out within a distance of the order of 2Å.

In a high current plasma in bismuth it is found that a self-induction electromotive force proportional to the square of primary current and to the inverse of carrier concentration is induced to the radial direction opposing the inward flow of electrons. This phenomenon is a general form of electromagnetic induction, and so the possibility of observation of such phenomena in more general magnetofluids may be expected.

The Shubnikov-de Haas effect of n-type HgTe was observed below 4.2°K. From the analysis of oscillations of the said effect, two kinds of period were found, which may be ascribed to the participation of two kinds of electrons with different effective masses in an electric conduction, and also it was revealed that the Fermi surfaces of these electrons are both nearly spherical. The effective mass of one kind of electrons deduced from the effect in the weak magnetic field range was estimated at (0.027±0.001)
m,
m being the electron rest mass. This value is in good agreement with that reported by others from the assumption of a single conduction band. However, we arrived at the conclusion, by taking into account the results in the strong field range, that there should be two kinds of conduction bands. The temperature variation of Hall coefficient seems to show that there is no thermal energy gap in the band structure of HgTe.

By the electron tunnelling technique, the energy gap 2
Δ in superconducting tin films with various thickness
d ranging from 3670 Å to 420 Å was measured as a function of temperature
T and magnetic field
H parallel to the plane of the tin film. Temperature dependence of 2
Δ is almost the same for all tin films, and the mean value of 2
Δ(0)⁄
kTc is 3.57, where 2
Δ(0) means the energy gap at 0°K. As for the behaviours in magnetic field,
i.e. H dependence of 2
Δ and thickness dependence of the critical field determined from 2
Δ–
H curves, there are marked differences among the films,
d>1900 Å, 1900 Å>
d>
ca. 700Å and
d<
ca. 700 Å. Those of the films thicker than 1900 Å agree with the local theories by Ginzburg-Landau-Gor’kov-Douglass and Ginzburg-Landau respectively, while those of the films with medium thickness, 1900 Å>
d>
ca. 700 Å, are consistent with the non-local theories by Casella-Miller or Nambu-Tuan qualitatively. However for the thickness region,
d<
ca. 700 Å, there is no theory to explain the experimental results in magnetic field, but if type two superconductivity is assumed for these very thin films, a reasonable explanation can be given.

KBr single crystals are investigated by means of photostimulated thermoluminescence from 50 to 250°K. The spectral range of photostimulation is 240–700mμ. No evidence of V band stimulation has been found; only electron traps are involved in the stimulation process. Filling of the traps occurs either through capture of photoelectrons from the conduction band, or by tunneling of electrons from excited
F centers to neighbouring traps.

Color centers and zero-phonon lines due to impurities or lattice defects in MgO single crystals irradiated in a reactor at 80°K are reported. A number of sharp absorption bands have been interpreted as a single phonon band and/or two-phonon combination bands involving several characteristic phonon energies. Four characteristics of the zero-phonon lines are investigated experimentally as functions of the temperature; namely, the ratios of the line intensities to their associated broad bands, the shift in the peak position, the half-width and the line shape. The results can be well described in terms of Raman scattering of Debye-model phonons, although different Debye temperatures must be assigned to different zero-phonon lines.

The effective magnetoresistance and Hall effects in inhomogeneous semiconductors with high carrier mobility have been calculated by using a stratified medium model. The theory shows that the effective magnetoresistance consists of two contributions, one proportional to sin
2\varphi and the other with sharp dependence on \varphi, \varphi being the angle between the magnetic field and the current, and that the Hall effect is the same as in a homogeneous medium. The sin
2\varphi dependence is mainly due to
the physical magnetoresistance and the sharp one due to the stratified inhomogeneities in electron concentration. Experiments were made with high purity
n-type InSb at 77°K under magnetic fields up to 1.5 weber/m
2, showing a good agreement with the theory.
It is concluded that the measured values of the magnetoresistance in high purity
n-type InSb specimens at 77°K can be explained by considering the influence of stratified inhomogeneities in electron concentration, in addition to
the physical magnetoresistance.

A new tin-gold technique has been used to apply planar ohmic contacts to
n-type GaAs in order to develop planar bulk GaAs oscillators. The contacts have shown ohmic contact characteristics and provided sufficient mechanical strength for device fabrication. However, the characteristics of the planar devices studied were considerably different from those of conventional sandwich devices. Average threshold fields for spontaneous oscillations were as high as 13,600 V/cm instead of about 300 V/cm for sandwich devices.
This paper describes a method of preparation of the contact and presents some preliminary characteristics of planar devices. Nonuniform field effects are briefly discussed to explain the characteristics of planar devices. Some recommendations are given of improving device characteristics.

Effect of neutron irradiation at LNT on the color center formation in CaF
2 crystals was investigated. A peculiar absorption band system was obtained. It differs either from the usual four band spectrum or from the spectrum of the crystals neutron-irradiated at pile temperature. In addition to the bands observed in CaF
2 crystals irradiated with neutrons at pile temperature, appears a band peaking at 580 nm, which grows with increasing neutron dose.
The
F band could not be observed. Change of the defect state during storage and effect of temperature rise on color centers are discussed and used for the explanation of the absence of the
F band in crystals irradiated at low temperatures. Optical bleaching study shows that the main band at 420 nm is composed of at least two different bands. A band at 535 nm, which is characteristic of neutron irradiation, shows a fine structure at liquid helium temperature. Brief comments are made on the center responsible for this band.

A resonance line characterized by
g⁄⁄=1.783 and
g⊥=1.764 was observed at 1.5°K under irradiation of band gap light in undoped CdS. The resonance signal was greatly diminished by annealing the sample in sulfur vapour and was enhanced by annealing it in cadmium vapour at high temperature (∼800°C). The depencence of the resonance intensity on the wavelength of excitation light was measured. The relevant processes involved in excitation and quenching for the resonance signal are discussed in terms of electron transfer from some electron traps via the conduction band and recombination with holes excited from cadmium vacancies into the valence band by the radiation respectively. As a possible model for the magnetic center responsible for the resonance the sulfur vacancy with an unpaired electron is considered. Some results on ENDOR experiments are presented.

The electronic excitation cross-sections of the
N2+ first negative system, the
O2+ first negative system and two band systems of
CO2+ were obtained for the electron energy in the range of 80 eV to 1500 eV. The intensity distributions in these molecular band systems were determined under the same conditions. The relative vibrational transition strengths of these band systems and the relative Franck-Condon factors for ionization of these molecules were found to be in essential agreement with theoretical ones given by Bates, by Nicholls and by Wacks. The ratios of the excitation cross-sections to the ionization cross-sections are 2.5% (
N2+ 3914 Å), 0.72% (
N2+ 4278 Å), 0.14% (
N2+ 4709 Å), 0.3% (
O2+ 6026.4Å), 0.4% (
O2+ 5631.9 Å), 0.2% (
O2+ 5973.4Å), 1.2% (
CO2+ 2896 Å), 0.4% (
CO2+ 3247 Å) and 0.4% (
CO2+ 3254 Å) respectively, which are independent of the electron energy m the energy range concerned.

In order to obtain detailed information on the u.v.-induced energy transfer and the excited states in DNA, the fluorescence and phosphorescence of nucleosides, nucleotides, and DNA in 1:1 by volume of ethylene glycol-water at 77°K have been studied. Our main conclusions are: (1) At neutral pH, both the purine derivatives and the pyrimidine derivatives phosphoresce, with the lifetimes of 1.25–2.45 sec and 0.45–0.65 sec, respectively. (2) The lowest triplet state energy of the five bases decreases in the following order: cytosine, guanine, adenine, uracil, thymine. (3) The phosphorescence of DNA is composed of the two components which originate from the neutral thymine and the neutral adenine, but the lowest triplet state of DNA is almost located on the neutral thymine bases (more than 95%). (4) The fluorescence of DNA, which is red-shifted by about 35 mμ from an equimolar mixture of its constituent nucleotides, is understood in terms of the interaction of bases stacked on the same strand in the first excited singlet state. (5) The energy transfer in DNA takes place not via the hydrogen bond between strands but along the strand.

A number of
57Fe enriched peroxidase and its derivatives are investigated by the Mössbauer effect of heme-iron. Fluoride compound exhibited broad magnetic hyperfine splittings characteristic of ferric high-spin state. Hydroxide and azide compounds showed large quadrupole splittings resulting from ferric low-spin states. Free peroxidase and cyanide compound exhibited quadrupole splittings of strong temperature dependence. The temperature dependence of quadrupole splittings is too strong to be ascribed to (
dε)
5 state. The small quadrupole splitting and small isomer shift of cyanide compound are attributable to the covalent mixing of CN
− and ferriciron. The reduced peroxidase exhibited large isomer shift and large quadrupole splitting of strong temperature dependence. These are the characteristics of ferrous high-spin state. Reduced carbon monoxide compound showed a small quadrupole splitting, which is attributable to ferrous low-spin state.

The cross sections for the scattering of slow electrons by polar molecules are calculated in the approximation of the two-center dipole field, where the dipole field of the molecule is represented by that of a pair of point charges fixed at a distance. The wave equation is expressed in the prolate spheroidal coordinates and solved numerically. The dependence of the total and the momentum-transfer cross sections on the dipole moment
D are shown for several incident energies of the electron. The cross sections have a pronounced peak at a certain value of
D; this indicates the presence of a type of resonance. This peak may explain the large cross sections observed experimentally for some polar molecules. The effect of an additional short-range potential is discussed briefly.

Preliminary measurements of scattering of CuK
α X-rays (λ=1.54 A) from liquid He
3 have been made at three temperatures 0.65, 1.25, and 2.29°K. The liquid structure factor
i(
s)+1 was deduced for each case. The results generally agreed with a theoretical prediction. The distribution function for the liquid is computed by using the Fourier inversion procedure. From this, the number of the nearest neighbors and the distance of closest approach of two atoms in the liquid are estimated to be about 7 atoms and 2.3 A, respectively.

Low-frequency oscillations (<1 MC) in a magnetized carbon arc were observed in order to study the oscillation mechanisms in a fully ionized, high temperature, high density plasma. The pressure range used is from 10
−3 to 10
−5 torr, and the ion and the electron temperature are 2×10
5 and (3–11)×10
4 °K, respectively, and the electron number density is about 1×10
14/cc.
At least, four types of oscillations have been detected. They are due to acoustic wave, Alfvén wave, drift wave and
IrBz-plasma rotation. The frequencies of the acoustic waves are 25, 140, 390 420 and 450 KC, and those of the Alfvén wave, the drift wave and the
IrBz-plasma rotation are 50, 175, and 280 KC, respectively, at the arc current of 100 A and the magnetic field of 2500 gauss.

Characteristics of the linear turbulent heating are experimentally studied. From a hydrogen —occluded titanium— washer plasma source a plasma having the density of 1·10
13 ions/cc and the electron temperature of 9.5 eV was injected into a metal tube in a magnetic mirror field, and through the fully ionized plasma a discharge was successively made along the magnetic field lines with the turbulent heating. The diamagnetic measurement shows heated pressures of 1.7·10
16 eV/cc, and the hard X-rays of 20 to 70 keV energies are observed to last for 200μ sec duration. The detection of hard X-rays was found to be very sensitive to the operating condition of the plasma source. As the firing energies of the plasma source decrease, the energies of hard X-rays increase and the observed duration of them increases up to 500μ sec.

The two-dimensional flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past a finite flat plate set perpendicularly to the undisturbed flow is studied numerically on the basis of the Oseen approximation. The effect of the flat plate is represented mathematically by a distribution of fundamental singularities and an integral equation for the distribution is solved numerically at values 4, 8, 12, 24 and 96 of the Reynolds number. The corresponding values of the drag coefficient are calculated and compared with those of previous studies.
