When the thorium tungsten is bombarded by ions, the activity is decreased as a result of the spattering of adsorbed thorium atoms. It is said that this effect is decreased when the surface of the tungsten is carbonised. We have investigated this effect with the bombardment of alkali metal ions, and found that this cause lies rather in the form of adsorption potential of the carbonized tungsten than in the adsorption energy itself.
