Sea water was pre-enriched in quark concentration by ion-exchange chromatography under the assumption that quarks behave like fractionally charged ions in aqueous solution. A phenomenological arguments in support of this assumption is disclosed. Millikan’s experiment was performed on about 700 salt grains obtained from the pre-enriched sea water. None of them beared fractional charges, which sets an upper limit: less than one quark per 4.5×10
−3 gram or per 3.0×10
21 nucleons in sea water.

Newly discovered resonances with extremely narrow widths are treated in the framework of colour-symmetric three-triplet model. Their decays including radiative modes are discussed. Consequences are compared with the charm-scheme. Provided we introduce a “momentum cutoff” for decaying particles and smaller effective radiative couplings (inversely proportional to parent masses), these resonances are explained fairly well not only by the charm-scheme but also by the colour-scheme.

The spectral distribution of the Internal Bremsstrahlung from the forbidden beta decay of
169Er was measured from 50 to 290 keV with a NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer with a standard geometrical arrangement. The experimental results agree fairly well in the middle photon energy region i.e., from 70 to 210 keV with the KUB theory and at high as well as at low photon energies, the Nilsson theory is found to explain the observed excess over KUB theory.

Stochastic behavior of a nonlinear oscillatory system is studied in a coordinate frame rotating with a fundamental frequency. It is shown that reactive property of nonlinearity of an oscillatory system is a cause of a violation of detailed balance of the fluctuation arround the steady state far from equilibrium. Whereas, even in the steady state far from equilibrium, the detailed balance of the fluctuation arround a circular secular motion can be established, if a phase of self-sustained oscillation is locked by the external force having particular strength.

Zero distributions of the partition function for a Ising model of 6×6 square lattice with the first (
J1) and the second (
J2) neighbor interactions and loci of the zeros of that for 4×∞ lattice are obtained. From the results of the present and previous studies, the followings are concluded. The locus of the Ising model at low temperature is a unit circle when
J1>0 and
J1+2
J2>0; dual circles when
J1<0 and
J2>0, (or
J1>0 and
J2<0) and in the region of the first order transition; dual loops with cusps when
J1<0,
J2>0 and in the region of the second order transition; four-fold loops with negative real tail when
J1<0 and
J2>0.
Loci of zeros for the hard core lattice gas of 6×∞ lattice with and without the second neighbor interaction are also obtained. The locus of the hard core lattice gas with attraction is nearly a circle below the tricritical temperature, and a loop with a cusp above the tricritical temperature. Apparent contradictions to the Yang-Lee theory observed in earlier stages disappear.

The simple general expression for Anderson-Grüneisen parameter δ has been tested for three different forms of the overlap repulsion energy terms viz. Varshni-Shukla, Lennard-Jones (12:6) and Mie-Grüneisen potentials. The results obtained for three potential models have been compared with the experimental as well as with other theoretical results. The present results are in good agreement with the experimental ones. The dependence of δ on

The anisotropic Heisenberg model has been investigated by interpolating anisotropy between the Ising and isotropic Heisenberg limits via general spin high temperature series (HTS) for the zero-field susceptibility of the ferromagnets for the square lattice. This is done by locating the critical temperature (
Tc(2)) and the susceptibility exponent (γ) from the analysis of the series by Pade approximant and ratio methods. The critical temperature is found to be spin dependent. It decreases as anisotropy changes from the Ising limit towards the isotropic limit and remains finite (lower than that of Stanley and Kaplan) for all the spins except for
S=1⁄2 at the isotropic limit. Exponent γ is almost Ising like for the anisotropic system and anomalous jump in it occurs for the isotropic case. In addition, expressions for the magnetization are derived by using spin-wave theory. The limit of complete isotropy has been found not to be a special case for the susceptibility, in contrast to magnetization.

The system Mn
2Sb
(1−x)As
(x) (0≤
x≤1) is found to be solid solutions of the Cu
2Sb type by X-ray analysis. A magnetic phase diagram has been produced by magnetic measurments in the temperature range 80 to 1100 K. Transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic states with increasing temperature was observed for the compounds with
x≤0.4 and the compounds with
x≥0.55 were antiferromagnetic at all temperatures below the Néel temperatures. It is shown that these magnetic transition are explained qualitatively by the molecular field theory.

Hyperfine fields at Sn in new ferromagnetic Heusler alloys Co
2TiSn, Co
2ZrSn and Co
2HfSn are studied by means of Mössbauer effect and NMR. The magnitudes and the signs of the hyperfine fields obtained from Mössbauer measurement are +81.6, +88.1 and +106.0 kG at 80 K for Co
2TiSn, Co
2ZrSn and Co
2HfSn respectively. NMR results for Sn nucleus agree with those of Mössbauer effect except for high frequency resonance lines which are probably due to ferromagnetic Co clusters. Moreover a strong NMR signal of Co
59 in Co
2TiSn at correct lattice sites is found to be +22.2 MHz at 77 K.
The results are compared with other Heusler alloys and are discussed about the origin of the hyperfine field at Sn in the alloys based on Blandin and Campbell theory of the spin polarization of conduction electron.

The magnetization of magnetite was measured with high accuracy in the temperature region of the transition. The decrease of the saturation magnetization of about 0.1% was observed on cooling. The observed changes of the apparent magnetization along various directions are quantitatively explained in terms of the orthorhombic magnetic anisotropy energy and the expected twinning of the low temperature phase. Rhombohedral symmetry of the lattice below the transition temperature was also expected from the experiments with a specimen squeezed along [111].

The magnetization of polycrystal and single-crystal Pr with the dhcp structure is measured up to 80 kOe at 1.5∼100 K. The induced moment of the single crystal at low temperatures is highly anisotropic and tends to saturate in high fields, being fully consistent with Rainford’s theory. The magnetization of the polycrystal is nearly equal to the average of magnetizations along various directions of the single crystal.

The magnetic interactions in Heusler alloys Pd
2MnSn and Ni
2MnSn have been investigated using neutron spin wave scattering. The spin wave dispersion relations along the [00ζ], [ζζ0] and [ζζζ] directions have been observed across the whole magnetic Brillouin zone. The results have been analyzed using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian where only Mn atoms have a localized moment. It has been found that the interactions between more than 6th neighbors should be taken into account to reproduce the observation. The exchange constants at large distances have an oscillatory character which can be interpreted by the
s-
d type interactions based on the nearly free electron model. However, the
n.
n. and
n.
n.
n. interactions have signs opposite to those expected from the simple
s-
d model. The
n.
n. and
n.
n.
n. exchange constants in Ni
2MnSn (
TC=344 K) are larger than those in Pd
2MnSn (
TC=189 K), although the oscillatory parts have nearly the same values for both alloys.

Temperature dependences of spin wave energies, the integrated intensity of neutron scattering, as well as the magnetization of a single crystal of Pd
2MnSn have been measured. The results have been found to be well interpreted in terms of the spin wave theory including magnon-magnon interactions developed for the Heisenberg system. Neutron paramagnetic scattering from the same crystal has also been measured at 300 and 1000 K. The second moment determined from the energy spectra of Gaussian shape is in good agreement with that calculated using the exchange parameters determined by spin wave measurement at 50 K. These results indicate that the Heusler alloy is a typical Heisenberg system with long range interactions.

The existence of two magnetic states and the effect of the local atomic environment on these states for atoms in random ferromagnetic alloys are investigated in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Electronic states of a single impurity Mn atom in Ni–Co alloys are calculated with varying the numbers of Ni and Co atoms on the nearest neighbor sites and the alloy concentration. From an energy consideration, it is concluded that the magnetic moment of the Mn is parallel to the bulk magnetization in Ni-rich environment, while it is antiparallel in Co-rich ones.

The electronic structures of ferromagnetic Ni–Mn and Ni–Fe alloys are investigated theoretically. The Hartree-Fock calculation combined with the coherent potential approximation is shown to give two magnetic states for Mn and Fe atoms in Ni–Mn and Ni–Fe alloys, respectively. By introducing the ternary alloy picture in which Mn(Fe) atoms having antiparallel moments to the bulk magnetization are distinguished from Mn(Fe) atoms having parallel moments for a given Ni–Mn(Ni–Fe) alloy, the possibility of the coexistence of the two magnetic states is shown by an energy consideration. On the basis of the results obtained by this calculation, various magnetic properties are discussed.

A method of irreducible tensor operators is applied to construct effective Hamiltonians for non-Kramers ion pairs, taking a PrCl
3 crystal as an example. The exact effective Hamiltonian for the non-Kramers ion pairs can be derived by extending the theory given for a single non-Kramers ion. It is shown that these Hamiltonians involve the effects of electric multipole and magnetic dipole interactions as well as those of exchange interaction. Some remarks on the effective Hamiltonian for ion pairs are given. Finally, the experimental data on PrCl
3 and Pr
3+ ions in lanthanum ethyl sulfate and in LaCl
3 are discussed briefly.

Variational approach was considered for the energy band theory in the case of non-muffin-tin potentials. A functional was investigated for the variational procedure under the natural boundary condition. Matrix elements were obtained for the determination of energy bands in the general case of non-muffin-tin potentials. A model calculation was performed for the one dimensional empty case. Correct energy values were obtained.

The thermoelectric power of the Ag-alloy-films of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni are measured. The samples are prepared by the simultaneous vacuum evaporation method. The dependence of the observed thermoelectric power on the solute metals has a very similar trend with that of the bulk samples of Cu- and Au-based alloys. The results are compared with the calculation based on the Hartree-Fock approximation of the Anderson model. The calculation for AgTi, AgCr, AgMn, and AgNi are in qualitative agreement with the experiment, but for AgV and AgCo there is a large discrepancy.

Copper single crystals with the tensile axes on the [001]-[102] line at an interval of 2 degrees were extended in the range of −195°C and 800°C. Only the crystals which had the [001] axis showed parabolic work-hardening curves, in which 8 slip systems equivalent with respect to the tensile axis worked uniformly. The specimens whose axes deviated by 2∼6 degrees from the [001] axis splitted into two regions at the start of deformation: the first is the [001]-type region and the second the [102]-type region in which one or two slip systems predominate. It was concluded that the slip mechanism in the [001] crystals have a character of four-fold symmetry, which is essentially different from the slip mechanisms for copper single crystals with the other orientations.

Raman scattering spectra of mixed crystals of cuprous halides are measured. The observed behaviours of the optic phonon modes are well accounted for by the modified random element isodisplacement (MREI) model, and the mode types are determined as the one-mode type for CuBr
1−xI
x and the two-mode type for CuCl
1−xBr
x and CuCl
1−xI
x. The existing criterion for the mode type is valid in predicting the observed results in CuCl
1−xI
x and CuBr
1−xI
x, but for CuCl
1−xBr
x, more sophisticated model appears to be needed. The experimental local mode frequencies due to chlorine impurity in CuBr and CuI are in a reasonable agreement with the calculated values by the linear chain model. As for the gap mode in CuCl, the interpretation is not straightforward because of the complexity associated with the appearance of the double TO-like (β, γ) mode.

It has been observed that the intensity of the π emission at 3.31 eV in KI increases sharply within an exciting pulse duration and temporarily further with a time constant (τ
H) of ∼1μs, then decreases with a conventional decay time (τ
S) of about 1.8μs after the excitation by a pulsed N
2 laser above ∼70 K. The height of the absorption band at 1.2 eV due to the transition from the
3∑
u+ state to a higher excited state of the relaxed excitons behaves also in the same way. Such temporal increases suggest temporal increase of the population of the self trapped excitons at the
3∑
u+ state. From the temperature dependence of τ
H, τ
S and of the intensity of the emission, a higher excited state of the self trapped excitons, from which excitons re-relax further into the
3∑
u+ state, is discussed.

The exact Landau level structure of graphite has been obtained for the magnetic field parallel to the
c-axis with the aid of the numerical calculation. Special emphasis is layed on the effect of the trigonal warping in band structure which has been treated approximately up to the present. The peculiar behaviour of Landau levels in low fields can be understood in terms of the magnetic breakthrough phenomenon. A new de Haas-van Alphen oscillation of the minority hole is predicted and connected with another magnetic breakthrough effect due also to the trigonal warping.

The efficiencies of the
F center formation, η
F, and of the intrinsic luminescence, η
L, in KCl and KBr crystals have been studied under the irradiation of a pulsed electron beam at temperatures mainly below 4.2 K. η
F at 1.7 K was about 1/5 of that at 4.2 K, while η
L was almost a constant value down to 1.7 K, suggesting no change of the efficiency of the
Vk type relaxation of the self trapped hole. The decrease of η
F follows an Arrhenius’ equation with a thermal activation energy of ∼2 meV and ∼1 meV in KCl and KBr crystals, respectively. A tentative mechanism of the
F center formation is discussed.

Degree of circular polarization (DCP) and intensity of the A
T and A
X emission bands in KI : Ga
+, KBr : Ga
+, KI : In
+, KBr : In
+, and KCl : In
+ have been investigated at various temperatures (1.4–4.6 K) and field strengths (0–42 kG). The results concerning the A
T band have been qualitatively explained by correlating its relaxed excited state (RES) with the nearly tetragonal minima on the
Γ4− (A) adiabatic potential energy surface (APES) and the three tetragonal minima on the
Γ1− APES. As to a comparison between the A
T and A
X bands, they bear similarities in a particular impurity (Ga
+ or In
+); with a decrease of temperature, for example, both the bands show an increase in the DCP of Ga
+ and show a decrease in the DCP of In
+. The similarities have prompted us to adopt the recent proposal that the A
X RES consists of the nearly trigonal minima on the
Γ4− (A) APES and the four trigonal minima on the
Γ1− APES.

p the plasma frequency and τ the electron collision time. The observed maximum gain frequencies in weak signal regime are compared with theoretical ones. It is found that the observed value for sample with carrier concentration of ∼10
16 cm
−3 deviates from the calculated value based upon the ordinary phonon amplification process. This deviation is qualitatively explained in terms of the plasma enhancement of the phonon amplification. The phonon spectra in strong signal regime and the shape of the phonon-flux domain are also observed.

Tensile behaviors of aluminum thin wires have been studied over a diameter range of 5 to 200 μmφ. Critical resolved shear stress (C.R.S.S.) increases linearly against the inverse square root of specimen diameter. By in-situ deformation of thin wires in an ultra-high voltage electron microscope, it has been revealed that many dislocations pile up against the specimen surface before yielding. At the yield point, many dislocations abruptly escape out from the specimen surface, and no more dislocation pile-up is observed at the same positions. On the basis of these data, it is concluded that the size effect on C.R.S.S. is attributed to the blocking of mobile dislocations at the surface due to the surface film before the yielding. It is also concluded that the surface promotes the deformation because of continuous escape of dislocations through the slip bands after the yielding and no debris layer exists in the surface layer under the stressing.

The third-order correlation properties of the integrated intensity of a Rayleigh scattering are discussed. The third-order temporal cumulant of the Rayleigh scattered light from polystyrene latex has been measured with a computer-controlled data acquisition system. The results of the experiment are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

The influence of the tunneling motion of NH
4-ions on the proton spin-lattice relaxation time
T1ρ in the rotating frame has been investigated in some ammonium salts with weakly hindered NH
4-ions. We have observed that the minimum of
T1ρ appears at higher temperature and the minimum value is much larger than those predicted by the classical theory of relaxation. According to the temperature dependence and
H1-dependence, we classify the anomalies of
T1ρ into three types. An interpretation using a simple model is given.
T1 and
T1D (relaxation time in the ADRF state) have been also measured between 300 K and 4 K for comparison.

Differential scattering cross sections of K
+ ions in the range 150–700 eV in collision with Ne atoms were measured at laboratory angles up to about 35°. Pseudo-rainbow peak theoretically predicted was clearly exhibited. Energy analysis of the scattered ions showed that no inelastic process was involved in K
+-Ne collisions in this work. The repulsive potentials effective in the interatomic distances from 0.7Å to 1.6Å were derived from the cross sections. The potentials are in good agreement with the results published by other workers.

A spectroscopic study is carried out on a helium plasma produced by the P.I.G. type discharge. The radial distributions of the emission coefficients of 2
3P-
n3D lines and the recombination continuum are obtained from the measured chord intensity-distributions by means of the Abel inversion. The population densities of
n3D states of helium atoms and free electrons are calculated from the emission coefficients. From the Boltzmann plot which is the population density distribution of the excited states and free electrons, it is revealed that the highly excited states of helium atoms are in equilibrium with the free electrons, that is, the Saha equilibrium is established between them. The electron temperature and the electron density are found to be 0.23 eV and 5.5×10
13 cm
−3 at the radial position R=5 mm, and 0.17 eV and 2.2×10
13 cm
−3 at R=10 mm, respectively.

Harmonic Drift wave oscillations accompanied by sidebands have been observed in a single-ended Q-device with collisionless Lithium plasma. The power spectrum of the harmonics is found to fall off with frequency as
f−4.8±0.6 in agreement with the theoretical prediction of plasma turbulence by F.F. Chen. The generation of sidebands due to trapped particles by the wave is inconsistent with the results. It is probably due to the modulation of the drift wave by the low frequency oscillation which is observed simultaneously. A transition from a discrete spectrum to turbulence occurs as the magnetic fields is increased and the formation of turbulence appears to be related to sideband interactions.

Spectral distribution of radiation emanating from longitudinal excitations in a semi-infinite plasma is calculated with inclusion of the possible effect of the plasma anisotropy and the electromagnetic boundary conditions at the plasma-vacuum interface. The relationship between the radiation spectrum and the density fluctuations is thereby clarified within the framework of the linear theory.

Nonlinear interactions between a high frequency electromagnetic field and a plasma in a cavity are experimentally studied. The electric field is perpendicular to the density gradient. A low frequency oscillation is observed when the angular frequency ω
o of the electromagnetic field is nearly equal to the maximum plasma frequency ω
pm. It is attributed to a parametric decay process which is confirmed by observing the frequency matching condition and the dispersion relation for the excited low frequency wave. The threshold intensity of the pumping field is considerably higher than the value predicted by the theory in uniform plasmas. The effective collision frequency ν
eff measured in the cavity has two distinct breaking points as the power of the high frequency field increases. When ω

pm, the local decrease of the electron density observed at a point of ω

By the simultaneous operation of two theta pinch guns located at the both ends of a discharge tube, plasma streams are injected into a longitudinal magnetic field. These two plasma streams collide with each other and the translational energy of the streams is transferred efficiently into the thermal energy. The ion temperature of the colliding plasma reaches about 100 eV. In the meanwhile, the electron temperature is much smaller than the ion temperature. The thermalization process can be understood satisfactorily in terms of the long range Coulomb scattering of particles.

Static and dynamic properties of two-dimensional classical electron plasmas on the surfaces of dielectric substances are investigated on the basis of an expansion with respect to the plasma parameter ε=2π

Thermodynamic quantities are calculated exactly to the order of ε; the collisional damping of the plasma oscillation which is larger than the Landau damping is obtained. The results show the importance of the effects of the discreteness associated with individuality of particles in two-dimensional plasmas.

Implosions of a target pellet exposed to an intense laser light are investigated numerically by using the spherically symmetric hydrodynamic equations. In order to obtain the maximum output of the fusion energy from the pellet, the following facts are pointed out: (1) There is an optimum value for the laser intensity: (2) It is effective to replace the outside part of the critical density of the target plasma by a substance with a heavier particle mass: (3) For large pellets, a larger laser power is efficient: (4) There is an optimum shape for the laser pulse: (5) More output energy is yielded from a pellet with a larger radius when the power and the pulse shape of the laser light are optimum.

By taking the limit
t→∞ in the corresponding transient case, the steady flow problem of an electrically conducting fluid past an oblique fiat plate at a high Reynolds number, in the presence of an aligned magnetic fleld, is reexamined analytically. The characteristic behavior of the circulation in the sub-Alfvénic case is found to be similar to that of the MHD fiow of Kutta condition type. Moreover, the magnetic field vanishes in the backward wake of Oseen’s asymptotic flow. The flow of Stewartson’s type having two wide wakes in front and in rear exists only in the case of the pressure number
S→∞.

Hydrodynamical properties of a helical tail of flagellated organisms are discussed. The tail is considered as a helical chain of 2
N+1 frictional elements. The translational and the rotatory friction coefficients and the interaction coefficient between translational and rotatory movement are calculated. Comparison with a helical cylinder model is made.

A theoretical study is made of the force on a spherical particle which is slowly translating in a viscous fluid bounded by two perpendicular walls. Results are obtained up to the first-order effects of boundaries on the basis of the Stokes equation. When the sphere translates parallel to one wall, it experiences besides a drag force a lift force which is positive or negative, according as it approaches to or recedes from the other wall.

Since the equations are non-reciprocal, the amplitude and waveform of a soliton propagating at a speed in the forward direction are different from those of a soliton propagating at the same speed in the backward direction. Analytical results are compared with those given numerically by Daikoku, Mizushima and Tamama.

The scattering of solitons from a mass-impurity at a free boundary in a one-dimensional nonlinear lattice is investigated numerically. A rarefactive soliton solution for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation is introduced in this lattice as the incident soliton. The results show that the soliton interacts strongly with heavy impurity but very weakly with light one. These are discussed in terms of the spectral analysis of the incident soliton amplitude.

The thermal expansion of various Cr
1−cMn
c alloys (0.01≤
c≤0.20) has been measured from 77 K up to temperatures above
TN. The alloys show a remarkable volume expansion below
TN due to magnetic ordering. For the Mn-rich alloys the spontaneous volume magnetostriction becomes comparable to that of Invar alloys.

To specify the condition for the anomalous thermal expansion due to a large spontaneous volume magnetostriction in ferromagnetic Laves phase intermetallic TFe
2 compounds, thermal expansion measurements for some TFe
2 compounds were made. The obtained results suggest that the anomaly is sensitive to the interatomic distance between neighboring iron atoms.

Nuclear spin lattice relaxation times
T1’s of V
51 and Co
59 in the intermetallic compound VCo
3 have been measured in a temperature range from 1.4 to 300 K. The values of 1⁄
T1T for both V
51 and Co
59 deviate from constant values. This anomalous behaviour is well explained by recent spin fluctuation theory of Moriya and Ueda in nearly ferromagnetic metal. In this compound the contributions to 1⁄
T1 from orbital interaction and spin fluctuations are separately obtained for V
51 and Co
59.

In pure gold electron-irradiated at 78K, it was observed that interstitial loops were formed preferentially near dislocation lines. Results suggest that a strong interaction exists between an interstitial and a straight edge dislocation. It is stressed that such an interaction should be an important factor for the growth of an interstitial loop in electron irradiated metals.

It has been found that the polarity of the spontaneous polarization of NH

3 along the
b axis in its polar phase below 95°C can be reversed by the
dc electric field, and therefore NH
4IO
3 can be said to be ferroelectric. The polarity reversal is also ascertained by etching behavior of the crystal.
