The composition of secondary particles produced in the backward cone of nuclear interactions of 10
12 ev to 10
13 ev was investigated by means of a large emulsion stack. The angular distributions in the center of mass system of protons,
K± mesons and π
± mesons were observed to have their respective peaks in the narrow, \lesssim0.2 radian, angular region around the backward direction. The
K±⁄π
± ration in the peak was found to be 0.71±0.20. The
K± mesons in the peak are likely to be the decay products of φ mesons produced with small emission angles. Finally we examine with additional experimental data the “Aleph” isobar proposed previously.

An observation of horizontal air showers has been continued during these four years with the air shower array at the Institute for Nuclear Study, University of Tokyo. The integral size spectrum is expressed by (4.9±0.7)×10

5 and zenith angles above 70°. The zenith angle distributions for three size regions (0.5∼1)×10

4 indicate that the intensities are proportional to sec θ from 60° to 75° and decrease at above 75°±5° with attenuation mean free path of 5,000 to 10,000 g/cm
2. The proportion of nuclear cascade showers to the total showers is estimated to be (20∼70)% in the range of size 3×10
3 to 6×10
4. The implications of an effect of possible anomalous muon interactions and of, as an alternative, a possibility of heavy mass particles being the parent particles of the horizontal air showers are discussed.

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of alpha particles by
16O have been measured at laboratory angle of 176° as a function of incident energy in the range 20 to 24.5 MeV. Six resonances have been observed. Angular distributions have been measured at eight energies. Tentative spin and parity assignments of the compound

The secular integral equation (Yosida-Okiji-Yoshimori equation) of the Kondo problem is investigated,
T-matrix corrections, which comes from Suhl’s dispersion relations, to the Yosida-Okiji-Yoshimori equation is examined. It is shown that the result obtained by Yosida and coworkers for the binding energy of the single ground state is essentially correct.

A thermal Green function theory of Raman scattering is developed. The scattering efficiency can be obtained from the thermal Green function (the thermal average of the chronological products of the current and density operators) by doing analytic continuation. The theory is intended to be applied mainly to the scattering by metals and the skin effect at metallic surface is correctly treated, although it is applicable to any scattering processes. The efficiency is calculated for the scattering by one-electron excitations in normal metals, and the total efficiency is estimated to be generally 10
−11∼10
−12.

Static critical behaviours of a weak ferromagnet YFeO
3 were investigated. Magnetization measurements were made along the three different crystallographic axes near the Curie point. Along the
z axis, if we subtract the contribution of the antiferromagnetic susceptibility from the total magnetization, the resultant magnetization does obey the critical exponent expressions. The obtained critical indices are β=0.47±0.05, δ=5.1±0.5 and γ=1.9±0.2. With these critical indices the magnetization curves were found to fit the scaling law. Along the
x axis, with the increase of the applied field, the rotation of the spin axis was observed. The magnetization takes the maximum value below the Curie point. The temperatures of the magnetization maximum were determined as a function of applied magnetic filed. Along they
y axis, no drastic anomaly was observed.

Magnetic properties of one dimensional antiferromagnet KCuF
3 were investigated by electron spin resonance using microwaves of 10∼70 GHz regions in the temperature range from 1.5 to 400°K. Two types of the resonances were discriminated corresponding to two crystal modifications (a) and (d). The Néel temperatures T
N for these crystals were estimated to be 40±3°K and 20±3°K, respectively in accord with the data of neutron diffractions. Above T
N, the line width showed a strong temperature dependence which could not be explained theoretically. The
g-values obtained are,
ga=2.28±0.01 and
gc=2.16±0.01 for type (a) crystal and
ga=2.25±0.01 and
gc=2.16±0.01 for type (d), respectively. The resonance observed below T
N can be explained by an antiferromagnetic resonance of orthorhombic symmetry except the presence of an extremely short and field dependent relaxation time which gives rise to quenching of the resonance below 30 GHz. In addition to a strong anisotropy along the spin hard
c-axis, small anisotropy fields of 2.4±0.5 (type (a)) and 7.2±0.5 (type (d)) Oersteds were found in the
c-plane. The interchain exchange interaction was determined to be ferromagnetic.

High fields NMR experiments on Al–Mn alloys, complete previous results on this system. Together with the inhomogeneous Knight shift broadening of the Al
27 main line, two satellite lines could be detected. These effects are associated to the spin polarization induced by the impurity in the conduction band. One satellite, attributed to the first shell of neighours of the impurity, has a temperature dependent Knight shift suggesting a 15% reduction of the localized susceptibility from 0 to 300°K. The results are shown to be explained correctly by the frequency dependent Hartree Fock approximation if the experimental value of the susceptibility is used. When compared with more magnetic systems, the absence of qualitative difference for the macroscopic as well as microscopic properties, points out that these results may be valid for the whole range of critical temperatures, and stresses the smoothness of the transition magnetism-non magnetism.

Spin waves and low energy excitons in antiferromagnetic CoF
2 are studied theoretically on the basis of the effective Hamiltonian including all degrees of freedom in the ionic
4Γ4 state (effective
L=1,
S=3⁄2). Inter-ionic exchange interactions is taken into account in a simple but reasonable way. Calculated dispersions of the low-lying excitons (including magnons) compare well with the results of neutron scattering experiment. The light scattering by these excitons are treated by extending the previous theory, which makers use of the spin-dependent electric polarizability, to include the degrees of freedom of the orbital angular momentum. Symmetry arguments as well as quantum mechanical calculation of the
L- and
S-dependent electric polarizability are given. The polarization characteristics and scattering efficiency of the Raman scattering by the long wave excitons in CoF
2 are predicted. The Raman scattering by simultaneous excitations of two excitons are discussed qualitatively.

Magnetostriction constants, λ

[100] and λ
[111], of Ni–Cu alloys containing 0∼30.42% copper are determined from the longitudinal magnetostrictions of single crystals by means of optical lever method. Saturation magnetostriction of the polycrystal, λ
s, calculated from the magnetostriction constants are found to changed linearly with the copper content,
C, as λ
s=(−36.4+1.17·
C)×10
−6 which is in good agreement with previous experimental results. Moreover, the coefficients of dipole-dipole interaction, introduced by Néel, are discussed by use of the elastic parameters.

fcc) alloys are calculated in the range of 0°∼500°C using the values of Young’s modulus and shear modulus previously obtained with the same specimens.
The results obtained are the following:
(1) In its concentration dependence, Debye temperature at the paramagnetic state
ΘMp shows a minimum at around 40% of Ni.
(2) In its concentration dependence (
Remark: Graphics omitted.) shows a maximum at around 40% of Ni. As
T becomes higher, the concentration showing (
Remark: Graphics omitted.) maximum gradually moves toward the Fe-rich side.
(3) The concentration dependence of resistivity at the paramagnetic state ρ
p does not follow Nordheim’s rule. As one of the significant factors causing this “shift” from the rule, the contribution of thermal agitation of lattice cannot be neglected.

Stress-strain curves of iron whiskers, of which thickness ranges from 5 to 80 μ, have been measured using an Instron-type tensile machine at room temperature. All of the 〈111〉 whiskers show “work-softening”, of which softening rate decreases with increasing thickness. “The lower yield stress” decrease with increasing thickness in 〈100〉 and 〈111〉 whiskers thinner than about 35 μ. Marked thickness and orientation dependence of the stress-strain curve have been found. The 〈100〉 whiskers thinner than about 8 μ show no appreciable plastic deformation after the sharp yielding, as already known in very thin whiskers. Those, 8∼17 μ in thickness, show nearly flat regions in their stress-strain curves after yielding and those thicker than about 17 μ reveal “work-hardening” after about 5% strain.

Using the Boltzmann’s equation (in
k-space) for the motion of free carriers, an expression have been obtained for the second harmonic component of the current density in an indium antimonide (InSb) sample, at low temperatures, subjected to a d.c. electric field and an alternating electric field. This expression for the current density is used in solving the wave equation derived from Maxwell’s equations and hence, to investigate the optimum thickness (ξ
0=ω
z0⁄
c) of InSb slab such that the magnitude of the second harmonic component in the reflected and transmitted waves, from the Slab, is a maximum. It is found that the amplitude of the second harmonic component in the transmitted wave is always greater than that in the reflected wave and that the efficiency of second harmonic generation has a maximum when 0.75<ξ
0<0.95 for the transmitted wave and when 0.78<ξ
0<1.00 for the reflected wave.

A sharp line series has been found at the beginning of the fundamental optical absorption spectra of SnO
2 below 80°K for light polarized
E⊥
c. The series is identified as being a second class exciton structure, since it satisfies a hydrogen-like series relation beginning with
n=2 quantum state and, in addition, is followed by a continuum spectrum with absorption coefficient varying as (
hν−
Egap)
3⁄2. The results of Zeeman effect measurements are consistent with group theoretical predictions based on a crystal field-split valence band of oxygen 2
p functions and a crystal field-split conduction band of Sn 5
s functions, both having their extrema at
k=0. By a quantitative comparison with an anisotropic-exciton-mass formalism, the effective Rydberg constant, the band gap energy and the anisotropic exciton-reduced-masses are estimated as 0.0345 eV, 3.5969 eV (at 1.8°K) and μ
x=0.33

Multi-photon spectroscopy on some II–VI semiconductors was carried out by monitoring the transmitted intensity of a probe light under the application of a laser light. Both the increase and decrease of the transmitted intensity were observed after the laser pulse. They correspond to the change of an absorption coefficient by the order of 10
−3 cm
−1.
In comparison with the studies of the recombination radiation of excitons excited by two photons of the laser, these effects are considered to be due to the carriers created by two-photon absorption and captured by the trap states in the band gap. These states which are impurity levels or lattice defects are generally located at the lower energy side of the free-exciton recombination states.
Small change of the optical absorption in a thick sample is detected by this method.

The effect of pressure on the crystal structure and the lattice parameter of vacancy rich titanium monoxides has been studied using a high pressure apparatus of the tetrahedral anvil type combined with an X-ray diffraction equipment. Two kinds of specimens, TiO
0.82 and TiO
1.25, have been used, the former containing most of vacancies in the oxygen sublattice and the latter in the titanium sublattice. Up to the pressure of 60kbar, no significant change in the crystal structure has been observed. The change in the lattice parameter with increasing pressure is unexpectedly small for both the specimens, but a minor difference between them has been observed. An initial change is larger in TiO
0.82 than in TiO
1.25, while in the pressure range between 10 and 60kbar the latter shows faster decrease. The experimental results are discussed in relation to the behavior of the vacancies under high pressure.

180° domain walls have been observed on X-ray diffraction topographs of sodium nitrite (NaNO
2) single crystals. Contrast of the walls depends on the kinds of the Bragg reflections used for the topographs. The reflection dependence of the contrast suggests that the contrast is produced neither by strain field around the domain walls nor misorientation of the lattice in the domain walls. A model of the crystal structure of the walls which is consistent with the observed contrast is presented. Thickness of the walls is estimated as the order of 1 μm on X-ray topographs and 0.3∼1.0 μm on electron micrographs of replica films extracted from polar surfaces of the crystal.

The electron state in a refractory material, AIN, has been studied by means of the Compton profile analysis. The discrepancy between the theoretical profile calculated from wave functions for isolated atoms and the measured profile for the corresponding crystal is very large compared with the cases of ionic crystals. It has been concluded that the covalency in the solid or crystalline state of AIN should be taken into account in order to get a better agreement.
As required, the linear momentum functions have been calculated and listed for isolated atoms, Al
−, Al
+, Al
+2, Al
+3, N
− and N
+, using the wave functions by Clementi.

A simplified intensity calculation method for low-energy electron diffraction is proposed. The effects of inelastic process are included by the use of the optical potential. A set of coupled differential equations obtained through the two-dimensional Fourier transform of the potential is reduced to a set of coupled linear algebraic equations, which is solved numerically. Applications are made to the (001) surfaces of LiF, NaF, PbSe, Al, Ni, Cu, Pd, Ag, Au, and the (0001) surface of graphite. The contributions to the optical potential from plasmons and longitudinal optical phonons are estimated for a continuum model.

A collimator classified as type I in a previous paper (J. Phys. Soc. Japan
29 (1970) 1322) is investigated, in which highly asymmetric reflections take place three times. In the collimator constructed, 422 reflections of silicon with CuK
α1 were used and the beam of an angular spread of 0.1″ or 0.01″ was obtained. The intensity distribution of the beam diffracted form the collimator was calculated. The measured diffraction curves were compared with the calculated ones.

The Zeeman effect of a sharp line in the red region of cesium chromium alum was investigated at low temperatures, using the magnetic fields up to 27 kOe, which were applied parallel to the [100], [111], and [110] axes. The
g values and the quantization axis of the excited state of a Cr

Diffusion controlled reaction process in liquid is treated as a many-body problem from a view point of stochastic process. The time development of the ensemble of the reaction systems is formulated by introducing the survival probability as a fundamental quantity which is derived from the Smoluchovski equation with pair-absorbing interaction. This equation has just the same form as the Bloch equation for the density matrix of hard-core system in which 1⁄
kT and hard-core radius correspond to the diffusion constant
D and reaction radius σ, respectively. The equation is solved by introducing the cluster integrals which are calculated by means of the binary collision expansion. The survival probability is obtained in the form of a power series of the reactive particle densities up to the 4th order under the condition of σ

Perturbation method based on a canonical transformation which has been developed in a previous paper for infinitesimal expansion parameter ε, proportional to the amplitude of wave, is extended to the case where ε is small but finite. Under the transformation, original system is transformed into a new system where off-resonant particles are almost in free motion while resonant particles are under influence of almost monochromatic wave. Solution for the off-resonant particles is essentially the same as that found in the previous paper, while solution for the resonant particles is essentially the same as that found by O’Neil. For both groups of particles, the waves off-resonating with the particles have effects of a reduction of effective mass and broadening of particle propagators.

m. As the pump field increases, the amplitude of the excited signal becomes saturated and a last the signal disappears. The frequency conservation among the pump and excited signals is certified. The experimental results are interpreted on the basis of Mathieu equation derived from the electrostatic hydrodynamic approximation, assuming the spatial gradient of the electron density.

Rayleigh equation in the hydrodynamic stability theory is investigated for antisymmetric velocity profiles in a channel. For the disturbance of zero-phase-velocity, it is revealed that there exist only two neutrally stable solutions, one is the spatially antisymmetric mode of zero-wave-number and the other is the symmetric one of finite wave-number.

A method is proposed for simplifying the procedure of solving the Orr-Sommerfeld equation of the hydrodynamical stability problem. Among the four independent solutions only the slowly varying solutions are expanded into Fourier series whereas the rapidly varying solutions are expressed in terms of the Tietjens function. The Fourier expansion is not carried out on the real axis as usual but along a curve which lies in the complex plane. As an example the stability of the plane Poiseuille flow is investigated. The present method is shown to be very effective in bringing rapid convergence of the series, and the numerical results agree well with those due to direct numerical integration of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation.
