When a magnetic field applied to a ferromagnetic substance suddenly changes, its magnetization instantly approaches a final equilibrium value. However, small changes of magnetization follow even after the change of magnetic field is quite completed. This phenomenon is known as magnetic after-effect. Based upon recent theories on the mechanism of magnetization, retardation of the displacement of magnetic domain boundaries has been taken into account in a discussion of this phenomenon.
1) In explaining magnetic after-effect, only gradual changes of magnetization are discussed, but, it is not yet clear whether this change is really continuous or not. The present writer has detected discontinuous changes of magnetization (Barkhausen jump) in the course of magnetic after-effect under various conditions; in this paper a method and results of measurement of the discontinuous change of magnetization in the course of magnetic after-effect are described, and a discussion on the mechanism of magnetic after-effect is given based upon the results obtained.
