Absolute determination of X-ray beam energy by cavity ionization camber method has been described and absolute photoneutron cross sections for natural Cu and Pb have been determined with an ETL quantameter and a 4π neutron detector using the X-ray beam from a 25 MeV betatron.
Peak photoneutron cross section for natural Cu and Pb are 78±8 m at 17.2 MeV and 660±60 mb at 14.1 MeV, respectively. These values are about 20% lower than the average cross section value obtained by several bremsstrahlung experiments. σ
−2 for Cu and Pb are 1.81 mb/MeV from threshold to 24 MeV and 18.6 mb/MeV from threshold to 23 MeV, respectively. Using the contribution of the (γ,
p) cross section for Cu, the ratios of σ
−2 to 0.00225 A
5⁄3 mb/MeV for Cu and Pb are 0.95±0.14 and 1.13±0.17, respectively.

Energy and angular distributions of photoprotons from
23Na,
31P,
32S,
40Ca,
55Mn and
56Fe irradiated with bremsstrahlung have been measured using nuclear emulsions. The energy distributions indicate strong transitions to a few selected residual states. The angular distributions indicate that these states are hole states.

A new approximate treatment of the Ising spins is presented, in which the fluctuation of the effective field is taken into consideration. It is shown that the simplest approximation gives the satisfactory results. The approximation is applied to the random spin system and the critical concentration is calculated. The results are again satisfactory compared with those of other method.
This idea is applied to the dynamical problem based upon the Galuber model, and it is shown that the approximation equivalent to Bethe’s one can be obtained in the case of the thermal equilibrium by the improvement of the simplest approximation. Using the improved approximation, the dynamical susceptibility and the pair correlation function in the thermal equilibrium are calculated.

The
D-value of Mn
2+ in CoCl
2·2H
2O has been obtained to be −0.13 cm
−1 by Date and Motokawa. The large negative
D value is reasonably explained by introducing an effective exchange interaction of general form between the Mn
2+ and the ground Kramers doublet of Co
2+, taking account of the crystal symmetry. It is shown that the interaction −2
JxzsxSz −2
JyzsySz is responsible for the negative
D-parameter. The effective exchange interaction is derived from the nondiagonal exchange between Mn
2+ and Co
2+ with respect to the cobaltous orbits by projecting the exchange to the ground Kramers doublet.

The Magnetic susceptibility and the electrical resistivity in Rh rich Rh–Pd alloys with Fe impurity were measured. The positive spin polarization of
d electrons of Rh–Pd alloys are observed at high temperature. At low temperature, the susceptibility of Fe impurity seems to diverge like log
T. This anomalous magnetic behavior of Fe impurity in Rh is interpreted on the basis of the positive spin polarization of
d electrons and the negative exchange interaction between the spins of the
s electrons of Rh and Fe impurities. The problem associated with the
s–
d anomaly of Fe impurity in Rh-Pd alloys in much more complicated than that in Cu-(Fe) and Au-(V) because of the existence of the
d electron in the conduction band.
The results of the thermopower and the electron paramagnetic resonance of Fe impurity in Rh are also reported.

2O was investigated using microwaves and pulsed magnetic fields. The results indicate that the Mn
2+ ion couples with surrounding Co spins by relatively weak exchange interactions and the effective spin Hamiltonian can be written by

−1, where F and AF mean the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling, respectively.

The plastic deformation behavior at upper yield point of iron single crystals was studied by the successive stress relaxation method. The specimens used have the same tensile axis [110], but the three specimen groups, of which the upper yield strengths were different from one another, were prepared by controlling carbon content and condition of heat-treatment.
From the results obtained at −61°C, was shown that the true plastic strain rate near the upper yield point can be expressed in terms of the product of two functions: \dotε=

g(σ), where ε is the plastic strain, and σ the applied tensile stress, the function being the forms of
f(ε)∝ε,

D⁄σ), where
m and
D are the constants particular to every specimen group.
On the basis of Johnston-Gilman concept, the contribution of the mobile dislocations to yielding characteristics was examined in terms of the mobility and the density separatedly, and compared in the three specimen groups.

The recovery of the electrical resistivity of polycrystalline 99.999% Au, Cu and Al, deformed at liquid helium temperature by elongation, was studied in the temperature range of 4.2° to 200°K. Initial recovery was followed in general by the large recovery stage for the three metals. The initial recovery stage was attributable to the dislocation rearrangement. The latter was considered to be due to annihilation of interstitial type defects. The results are discussed on the basis of current theories.

Attractive forces between graphite masses separated by 100Å are calculated to be 4.76×10
4 dyne/cm
2 by making use of Lifshitz’ formula for interaction forces between macroscopic neutral bodies. The two semi-infinite blocks are supposed to be put side by side with plane-parallel boundaries (perpendicular to the
c-axis). For dielectric constants needed, results by Taft and Philipp evaluated from reflectance data are used. A contribution due to π-electron to the force is about 67%. The total force is compared with that evaluated from an interlayer potential function of graphite given semiempirically by Crowell under assumptions of pairwise additivity. The latter is 4.4 times as large as the former. An origin of this discrepancy may be attributed mainly to a shielding effect due to the basal planes, which reduces the force, obtained without regard to the effect, to one third.

Electron scattering and recombination studies through cyclotron resonance in doped silicon are carried out between 1.5 and 4.2°K. It is found that below 4.2°K the electron resonance linewidth for
p-type silicon consists not only of scattering effect, but also of lifetime broadening. The latter can largely be eliminated on application of a strong uniaxial stress. So long as the scattering part is concerned, the observed features both for
n-and for
p-type materials are qualitatively explicable through the model of electron or positron scattering by a free hydrogen atom. Some discrepancies owing to the failure of the effective mass approach, however, are observed for all the dopants except for lithium. Analyses of temperature, stress and concentration dependence of electron lifetime in boron-doped silicon lead to the conclusion that the neutral boron impurities themselves are responsible for the carrier recombination.

The generation of microwave second harmonic and sum and difference frequency has been investigated analytically when two microwaves of frequencies ω
1 and ω
2 are incident normally on a semiconducting slab in the presence of a d.c. field. The analysis takes into account acoustic phonon scattering as well as ionized impurity scattering of electrons. For a typical case of germanium slab the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted components of second harmonic waves are 8.8% and 5.4% respectively of that of the fundamental wave.

A complex between α, α′-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) and iodine is studied on the electrical conductivity, the magnetic susceptibility and the electron spin resonance. The optical absorption of the thin film of the complex shows that the absorption peak of iodine is observed at 400 mμ and the absorption peak at 530 mμ which is due to the unpaired electron of DPPH decreases with increasing iodine concentration. The ESR signal of the unpaired electron of DPPH also decreases with iodine concentration. Therefore, the unpaired electron of DPPH which is considered to contribute to electrical conduction plays an important role in forming the complex. By introducing iodine into DPPH single crystal as impurity the conductivity of DPPH increases up to as much as 10
3 of that of pure DPPH, and the activation energy becomes smaller than that of DPPH and is almost independent of iodine concentration. These phenomena are due to partially ionized DPPH which results from charge transfer structure.
The paramagnetic susceptibility of DPPH decreases linearly with increasing iodine concentration and this linearity breaks when the mole ratio of iodine to DPPH is two. From the results of susceptibility measurement, it is suggested that the electron which is transferred to iodine molecule is in diamagnetic state.

Temperatvre dependence of the surface potential (total bending of bands) in Si(111) surfaces (
n- and
p-type bulk) deposited with a silicon dioxide and a silicon nitride was obtained by measuring the saturation value of surface photovoltage, in the range between 150 and 600°K. Substantially similar results were obtained for both the surfaces. Bands always bend upward in
n- and downward in
p-type Si. In Si crystals with relatively high impurity concentrations, the bending of bands was founds to decrease linearly with elevating temperature and in Si with relatively low impurity concentrations, the bending of bands also decreases linearly with temperature but levels off, tending to the flat bands. These results are well explained by assuming that there is a surface state band of a hyperbolic cosine from having a neutral point around the gap center and the Fermi level at the Si surfaces in nearly stabilized in a wide range of temperature. Total number of surface states estimated from the above distribution is larger than 2×10
11 cm
−2.

Absorption of a microwave near the cyclotron resonance by non-interacting electrons in the impurity (and phonon) field is treated by applying the connected-diagram expansion method to Kubo’s formula for the dynamic magnetoconductivity. It is found that there exists remarkable similarity between the collision frequency ω
f associated with the static conductivity and the high-frequency cyclotron resonance width
Γ. In fact, both ω
f and
Γ can be determined in essence from one and the same collision operator
gz, defined in terms of the totality of connected diagrams. The energy shift
Δ and the width
Γ satisfy a characteristic non-linear integral equation. This equation is solved in the weak coupling limit. For an electron-phonon system, a new expression for the resonance parameters (
Γ,
Δ) is obtained with the consideration of inelastic scattering by phonons.

The structure of a radical in gamma-irradiated Rochelle salt, which was named center No. 1 by Moulton and Moulton was studied by the electron spin resonance spectra at X-band frequency. The principal values of hyperfine tensors for the two protons were determined to be 5.4, −0.0, and −0.9 gauss, and 4.8, 3.4, and −4.0 gauss. The principal values of
g-tensor was also determined to be 2.0049, 2.0039, and 2.0024.
Form the informations obtained from the hyperfine coupling tensors and
g-tensor, the structure of center No. 1 was proposed to be OOC\dotC(OH)CH·(OH)COO which was formed by the breaking of C–H bond in the tartrate molecule. It is identical with the one of center No. 3 in the chemical composition, but different in the geometrical structure.

Ca(S:Se) phosphors activated with Mn were synthesized by making use of pure CaS and CaSe powders prepared carefully by chemical procedures. X-ray inspection showed that Vegard’s relation is valid in Ca(S:Se) system. Spectral distribution of emission band, excitation spectra and electron spin resonance were measured about these phosphors. Racah parameters of Mn
2+ ion and crystal field parameter
Dq are determined by an analysis of observed excitation peaks. The most fitted value of 10
Dq for these phosphors lies between 6100 and 6500 cm
−1. The absolute value of their fine structure coupling constant lies between 70 and 77×10
−4 cm
−1, being nearly independent of CaSe content. The comparison between the values of these two parameters of Ca(S:Se):Mn phosphors and those of Zn(S:Se):Mn phosphors, reported in the previous paper, shows that the Mn
2+-anion bond in the formers contains far less covalency than in the latters.

The method of minimum deviation was employed to measure the temperature dependence and the dispersion of principal indices of refraction of NaNO
2 crystal. Their room temperature values have been found to be
na=1.3455,
nb=1.4125 and
nc=1.6547. The temperature dependence of the birefringence were measured by a Berek compensator. Slight anomalies were found at the transition point. The anisotropic electronic polarizability of a nitrite ion was calculated from the experimental data of refractive indices based on the point-dipole approximation and has been found to be 2.240, 2.716 and 4.610Å
3 along the
a,
b and
c axis, respectively, at room temperature. It was concluded that the large optical anisotropy in this substance mainly arises from the polarizability anisotropy of the nitrite ion.

Impurity conduction has been investigated in three types of cadmium sulfide crystals, that is, Cl-doped cadmium sulfide, undoped cadmium sulfide grown from the vapour phase, and undoped cadmium sulfide grown by the melt. The crystals of Cl-doped cadmium sulfide exhibit the characteristics of impurity conduction at low temperatures which are similar to those of
n-type germanium and
n-type silicon: A metallic impurity conduction occurs above the excess donor concentration of 2×10

−3 is intermediate between metallic type and non-metallic one. A negative magnetoresistance effect is observed at the excess donor concentrations above 2×10

Hall effect and magnetoconductivity of photocarriers in TlCl have been measured by a transient method between 90°K and 1.8°K. It is found that the Hall effect changes its sign at some critical temperature, indicating that the conduction is of two-carrier. Above the critical temperature, the dominant contribution to the current is by electrons and below it by positive holes. Between 1.8°K and 10°K, high Hall mobilities of positive holes of more than 5×10
4 cm
2/volt sec are observed. From the angular dependence of magnetoconductivity at this low temperature, the shape of the constant energy surface at the top of the valence band is deduced.

Eigen frequencies of lattice vibration in a crystal containing a straigth dislocation are calculated. It is found that an eigen frequency of dislocation vibration (wave number: κ) lies in each of the intervals of the normal mode frequencies of
k2=κ in the perfect lattice. It is also found that there is one localized mode of dislocation vibration for every value of κ below the phonon band. Phonon scattering by the fluttering mechanism is treated by using the above results and the condition of resonance scattering is given. Finally the effect of the Peierls potential and the problem of quantization of dislocation vibration are discussed.

Electronic structure of hexagonal ε-Fe
2N and orthorhombic ζ-Fe
2N were determined by the measurement of superstructure reflection intensities, which are contributed only by nitrogen atoms. Specimen films were produced by nitriding evaporated polycrystalline iron films with ammonia gas. From the analysis of observed intensities it was concluded that the electronic structure of ε-and ζ-nitrides are about (Fe
+3⁄2)
2N
−3 and (Fe
+3⁄4)
2N
−3⁄2, respectively. It was also found that antiphase domains are formed in ζ-Fe
2N as a result of three ways in the nitrogen atom occupation of the octahedral interstices formed by the iron atoms.

The X-ray scattering amplitude for a finite wave packet diffracted by a distorted crystal is calculated by the use of a previously formulated theory (M. Kuriyama: J. Phys. Soc. Japan
23 (1967) 1369). Only a limited portion of the crystal is responsible for scattering. The geometrical arrangement of this region is discussed in terms of an observation point on the crystal exit surface, an incident (glancing) angle and an observation (detector) angle. The accuracy of the results depends on the lateral size of the incident X-ray beam. The internal wave fields and paths of classical energy flow are also discussed from the viewpoint of the present formulation.

Resonance minima in specular reflectivity of low-energy electrons by crystals explained in terms of the coupling of an incident wave and a wave which is bound inside the crystal only in the direction normal to the surface but travels parallel to the surface with a momentum larger than the parallel component of the incident momentum and propagates into vacuum. The theory is formulated on the basis of a set of coupled one-dimensional differential equations which are obtained from the Schroedinger equation by the two-dimensional Fourier transform of the potential. The minima are caused by transitions of incident electrons not only to penetrating bound states but also to localized bound states which are analogous to Tamm-Shockley surface states in semiconductor surface physics. Numerical calculations are made for model cases. The effects of inelastic processes are wholly neglected.

The problem of a circular inclusion eccentrically situated in a circular region is considered. Previously, the inclusions were supposed to be present in an infinite or semi-infinite medium, which considerably simplified the solution. The old methods, e.g. the point-force method used by J.D. Eshelby, Jaswon and Bhargava and others and energy method used by Bhargava and others cannot be used, simply because the point-force method needs an infinite medium and the energy methods require a considerable guessing of the equilibrium interface which is not possible in the present problem. However the theory of the Hilbert problem can be applied to provide explicit solution to the problem. The problem has also been generalized for the case when the Poisson’s ratios of the two materials are different but shear moduli are the same.

When a magnetoplasma is irradiated by an external microwave, the frequency of the excited subsidiary resonance waves is the same as that of the external microwave, even if the receiving frequency is not equal to the frequency of the external microwave. Experimental studies of their dispersion relation show that there is a forbidden band proposed theoretically by Bernstein. In order to investigate an excitation mechanism of these resonance waves, the half-width of the intensity distribution curves are measured for the various plasma parameters. These half-width are independent of the gas pressure, but strongly depend on the diameter of the plasma column.

Non-linear hydromagnetic solitary waves propagating at an angle to a magnetic field in a collisionless plasma are investigated taking account of the effect of an isotropic pressure. The transfer equations for electrons and ions are employed together with Maxwell’s equations for the electromagnetic field. The plasma is assumed to be fully ionized and quasi-neutral. The inertia of the electron is neglected.
The result of the analysis shows that the waves may classified into six types, two of which are similar to those in a cold plasma. Another four types are newly derived in this paper. That is, class B waves, according to the nomenclature by Cordey, exist in supersonic and subsonic flows. Two types of class A waves may appear in subsonic flows in which no wave propagates along or across the magnetic field. Some waves exist in supermagnetic flows, although only submagnetic waves can propagate in the case of a cold plasma. The width of the wave is of the order of ion Larmor radius.

The boundary layer equations for the magneto-hydrodynamic version of the Blasius problem are reduced to the system of simultaneous non-linear ordinary differential equations. These equations are solved by the Laplace transform method. The obtained solution, which has a finite radius of convergence is extended by using the steepest descent technique.

The equation of the characteristic functional for the Burgers one-dimensional model turbulence is solved using the logarithmic expansion method, which is equivalent to the cumulant discarding approximation of the corresponding order. The expansion is carried out up to the fifth-order and the change in time of the energy spectrum is expressed in terms of the power series of time for two different initial conditions. The numerical results are discussed in comparison with those due to the zero fourth-order cumulant approximation.
