    The most promising alternative to flashlamp pumping of high power solid-state laser driver for inertial confinement fusion reactor is the rapidly growing semiconductor laser (also called laser diode). It has inherently high efficiency, long lifetime (over three years at 10 Hz) and small thermal load to the laser material. The latter will enable an increase in pulse repetition frequency. It is shown that for laser fusion reactor driver a LD pumped MJ 0.35 p m regenerative solid-state laser with an overall efficiency of 10 % can be designed. It may be capable to operate at 4 Hz and 10 Hz with the laser material of Nd : glass and Nd SiO2 (or Nd : YAG), respectively.

    Since the distinguishing feature in practical helical fusion reactors is characteristic of “stationary machines”, it is an essential condition that a demonstracting experimental plant can be operated stationary. In the respect of stationaryoperations of the new devices to Helical-E, the superconductive devices can be positioned in the new helical system.
    An outline of results for realization of the superconductive helical devices is provided, herein, which were researched together with the members of universities and industries. In this research, investigation on superconductive helical coils (m =10) has been mainly carried out.

    A review on recent experimental results and theoretical models on anomalous transport and density limit in toroidal helical devices is presented. Importance of transport problems is discussed. Experiments on Heliotron-E, Wendelstein-VIIA and new devices, i. e., ATF, Wendelstein-VIIAS and CHS, are reviewed and an overview on confinement property is given. From recent experimental results one sees that there are anomalous transport, which increases with temperature, and density limit, and that they limit the energy confinement time as well as the attainable beta value. The confinement characteristics of the scrape off layer plasma and loss cone loss are discussed, and perspectives on the high temperature plasma are given. These anomalous transport and density limit will be difficult obstacles in realizing a reactor grade plasma in helical systems. It is an urgent task to draw a realistic picture of the confinement based on the present data base. The relevant knowledge now would be critically essential for the successful development of the research in 1990's.

    Mechanisms of spontaneous collapse of double layer (DL) in a linear turbulent heating device are studied. Parameters which may have effect on the life time τD of DL were examined. It is found that the life time of DL depends strongly on the distance between two electrodes and partial pressure of neutral particles, but less on wall materials and size of the wall. It is shown that the empirical law on τD can be best explained by a model which assumes that no ion is supplied from the anode and that ions are reflected at the cathode and stagnate in the cathode-side region of DL. Computer simulation based on this model shows that a pressure inbalance is produced across the DL. Then the DL is pushed toward the anode and vanishes when it reaches the anode.

    To analyze correlations among time-series data in plasma experiments, the fuzzy theory has been applied. The method includes the standard spectral analysis as the simplest case, which is for statistically equilibrium fluctuations. A generalization made by the method extends to correlation analyses of various non-equilibrium fluctuations. Preliminary results of data analysis by the method has been obtained for the REPUTE-1 experiments.
