    The theoretical treatment of the unimolecular dissociation reactions of diatomic molecules and diatomic metastable ions has been given in this paper. It is assumed in this theory that the spontaneous dissociation of diatomic molecules or diatomic metastable ions is caused by the process in which an atom or an atomic ion penetrates through the potential barrier formed by the bound potential and the repulsive potential. The rate constant of the spontaneous dissociation reactions due to the quantum mechanical tunnel effect has been calculated in accordance with the WKB method. It has been shown that the plural rate constants for the same unimolecular dissociation can be contributed from discrete virtual energy levels of diatomic molecules or diatomic metastable ions. The application of this theory will give a good explanation for the experimental results of the appearance potentials for diatomic metastable ions.

    A general description of burnup determining experiments is presented for making vivid a part of mass spectrometry, in comparison of results obtained from radiochemical and nondestructive analyses. Specimen of nuclear fuel was grains of uranium dioxide irradiated in a nuclear reactor for about 200 days, and its burnup was found to be 8, 000 MWD/T with sufficient consistency in the experimental results.

    Microdetermination of artificial sweetening agents in drinks and foods by means of mass spectrometry has been studied; some typical sweetening agents could be detected and characterized easily without such complicated separations as described in Standard Methods of Analysis for Hygienic Chemists……with Commentary(authorized by the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, 1965.). Even when a few sweetening agents were contained in a drink or food, all of them could be characterized by measuring a mass spectrum of the mixture which was obtained simply by extraction of the acidified, and/or the alkalified drink or food with ether; saccharin in the former case and dulcin and p-nitro-o-toluidine in the latter. Sodium cyclaminate is detected as cyclohexanol after diazotization treatment.

    The behavior of Bendix Channeltron C. E. M. 4028, a new type electron multiplier has beer investigated on the multiplier gain, pulse height distribution, etc. The multiplier gain exceeded 108and full width at half-maximum of pulse height distribution was 50% in a pulse saturated mode for heavy ion with low energy. The C. E. M. 4028 was confirmed to be well applicable to pulse counting method which was not only especially important in the isotopic micro analysis of radioactive material, but also seemed to be useful in other kinds of applications. The isotopic abundance ratio of mercury was measured by the mass-spectrometer with this detector system, finding the results were well coincided with the well known data in literature.
