JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA new type of double focusing mass spectrograph of wide mass range is proposed. With the use of electric quadrupoles the focal plane covering a wide mass range can be placed in the field free region outside the magnet poles. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIon optics of a double focusing mass spectrometer is investigated. The design technique for a high performance instrument with a field arrangement of QQHQC (Quadrupole, Quadrupole, Homogeneous magnetic sector, Quadrupole, Cylindrical electric sector) is described. The process of the computer calculation how to reduce the second and the third order image aberrations is explained in detail.
