A new type of double focusing mass spectrograph of wide mass range is proposed. With the use of electric quadrupoles the focal plane covering a wide mass range can be placed in the field free region outside the magnet poles. Ion optical calculation shows that an excellent focusing nature can be obtained over a mass range with 16 times mass difference.
Ion optics of a double focusing mass spectrometer is investigated. The design technique for a high performance instrument with a field arrangement of QQHQC (Quadrupole, Quadrupole, Homogeneous magnetic sector, Quadrupole, Cylindrical electric sector) is described. The process of the computer calculation how to reduce the second and the third order image aberrations is explained in detail. Several examples of mass spectrometers with excellent ion optical properties are shown. The whole list of computer program is given.
