    A new type non-magnetic mass spectrometer is proposed, which has a simple electrode strucuture of relatively small size, and operates by high frequency square form pulse voltage. Theoretical results show that this mass spectrometer will have a moderate resolving power of about 70 - 100 and an excellent sensitivity characteristics, especially suitable for a vacuum analyzer. It may be expected that the resolving power may be raised to at least about 300, only by changing the method of operation.

    The ion optical trajectories in the entrance and exit fringing fields of an electrostatic hexapole lens are calculated in a third order approximation. The potential distribution in a vicinity of the boundary is assumed to be a function which changes gradually along the center line but keeps the symmetrical and anti-symmetrical natures similar to the ideal hexapole lens. The influence of the extended. fringing field is reduced to a small bend and shift of the ion trajectory for the ideal field with a sharp cutoff boundary. The results of calculation are described in a transfer matrix representation.

    Attempts have been made to improve the precision and accuracy of the analysis of metals performed with spark source mass spectrograph by using some standard samples(aluminum, steel, copper and lead matrix)that contained impurities in concentrations ranging from a few thousan down to ten ppm. Reproducibility expressed in terms of coefficient of variation of the analytical results obtained on repeated exposures can attain 5 to 15 per cent(Tables 1 through 4)provided that all source oonditions are maintained constant, especially the spark gap at a rather large value of ca. 50μ and all plots for calculation curves are corrected for line width variation. From the analytical results thus obtained and further subjected to correction for mass dependence of emulsion sensitivity, the relative sensitivity factors of impurity elements have been. determined at the values ranging from 0.48 to 3.6(Fe=1)(Table6. cf. Table5). The experimental relative sensitivity factors agree within ± 30% with the values calulated by the relation proposed by Kai et al. in which the sensitivity factor of an element is inversely proportional to the product of its ionization potential and sublimation energy(Fig.4).

    The dissociation of the hydrogen metastable ions was studied using a pulsed ion source mass spectrometer. The pressure dependence of the hydrogen metastable ions from H2, HD and D2 indicates that they are all produced by the collision process in the ion source between the respective parent ion and neutral species. The appearance potential of each hydrogen metastable ion has an intermediate value between the ionization potential of the parent molecule and the appearance potential of the fragment ion, and this hydrogen metastable ion may be in a vibronic excited electronic ground state of the parent ion. The kinetic energy(K. E.)released during dissociation from each hydrogen metastable ion has an approximate relation, K. E. ≈ A. P.(m*)-I. P.(m0)+E0, where A. P.(m*)is the appearance potential of the hydrogen metastable ion, I. P.(m 0)is the ionization potential of the hydrogen molecule and E0 is the zero-point energy of the respective parent ion of the electronic ground state. The observed dissociation rate constants of the hydrogen metastable ions well agree with those of the approximate theoretical calculation provided that the dissociation is caused by the quantum mechanical tunnel effect.

    The mass spectral data from nearly 150 aliphatic esters have been correlated. A few simple rules and formulas have been devised which make it possible for anyone with a basic understanding of organic chemistry to identify any volatile straight-chained aliphatic ester from its mass spectrum. The procedure based on the simple rules has been written in a manner which could easily be converted to an algorithm for computerized identifications. A number of checks are provided which enable the analyst to confirm identifications.

  • The Combustion Gases from Resin Coatings

    The composition and smoke concentration of gaseous products formed from combustion of a number resin coatings have been studied. The coating materials tested were twenty-one kinds of organic substances such as oilpaint and polyphthalic acid resin enamel in view of the prevention of danger on The results show that the main products were carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, ethane, ethylene, etc. The main component of combustion-produced gases from coating materials were estimated by means of the mass spectrometric analysis.
