The ion beams off the median plane and parallel to it travel in a different fringing field from that in the median plane. So, the ion paths off the medain plane is different from that in the median plane, and the image the source slit produced by the ion beams off the median plane is shifted slightly along the y-axis. In this paper, the positions of the images are calculated numerically.

A 90° sector field mass spectrometer with a 350 mm radius of curvature was built for isotopic analysis of uranium. In order to improve the sensitivity, the ion accelerating voltage was raised up to 5kV and the ion current was measured with a vibrating reed amplifier. Two kinds of ion source were employed. One of them was an ordinary ion source for gas analysis and the other was a surface ionization source which could be used not only as a single-filament source, but as a triplefilament source. The natural isotope abundance ratio of uranium was measured with this instrument. By use of the gas analysis ion source, the ratio ²³⁵U/²³⁸U in UF6 was measured to be 0.738±0.004%. Using the single-filament source and the friple, filament source, the ratio ²³⁵U/²³⁸U in UO2(NO3)26H2O was measured to be 0.719±0.007% and 0.722±0.004%, respectively. The result obtained in case of UF6 seemed to be effected to some extent by the impurities contained in the sample. This work was supported by the govermental contract.

The Barth-type circuit for balancing out power supply voltage changes is re-examined and an improved design to determine the circuit parameters has been developed which allows the circuit to balance out the zero-drift due to the drifts in tube currents also. Design procedures are presented as well as its experimental result.

In this paper, preliminary experiments to determine the design and construction of a twelve-stage electron multiplier tube, which is operated with high stable gain for the detection of very small ion currents in a mass spectrometer, are described. The simple effective activating method of electrodes made of copper-beryllium alloy sheet was considered with phase diagram, and then electrolytic polishing was used after ?A-phase was separated out by hardening and tempering. The electrodes were also observed with the metallurgical microscope, electron microscope and diffraction. On the operational characteristics of the demountable five-stage multiplier, experiments were compared with electric potential field of its multiplier, which was measured by the conducting sheet method.

A small ampoule containing a very small amount of gas sample is introduced into the small sample reservoir of the panoramic mass spectrometer described in our preceeding paper. At the moment when the ampoule is broken, the rapid scan is started and a series of rapidly decreasing peaks on the cathode ray tube are photographed in rapid succession, say, every one second. This dynamic operation will minimize undesirable effects due to adsorption and desorption on the part of the analyser tube and the cumulative change caused by the filament which are unavoidable in the static operation.The present method has been cursorily to our satisfaction with neon samples about 10-6ml NTP.

The pumping action of the Bayard-Alpert gauge(B-A gauge)operated in ultra high vacuum was studied by use of a statically operated mass spectrometer. The sample gases measured were rare gases, carbon monoxide, nitrogen and methane, all of which are analyzable by static operation. The results are summarized as follows; The electrical pumping speed of the B-A gauge for A, CO, and N2 were 0.050, 0.06 and 0.12l/sec, respectively. The power of chemisorption of CO on the clean surface of Mo and W was remarkably large, and the rate of chemisorption to the electrodes of the B-A gauge was about 1.5 l/sec, but not chemisorbed on the glass surface. N2 was chemisorbed on the clean surface of W, but not that of Mo. No chemisorption of rare gases on the clean surface could be observed.

Though in the mass spectrometer for analytical use, tungsten filaments are usually carbonized to stabilize sensitivity and pattern coefficient, the stabilizing.effect of the carbonization has not been fully elucidated yet. We carbonized tungsten wire and ribbon with butene-2 and investigated the relation between the carbonizing conditions and the structure of tungsten carbides formed.For this analysis both the electron and the X-ray diffraction were used. The results obtained indicate that α-W2C is formed by a moderate treatment with butene-2, while WC is formed by a prolonged treatment.

Surface ionization of alkali metals has been studied with mass spectrometers. The instruments used are a Hitachi RMU-5 mass spectrometer(20cm, 90°), a Hitachi RMS-3 mass spectrometer(10cm, 60°)and an experimental instrument(35cm, 90°). The ion sources are similar to those reported by Inghram.The filaments used are of tungsten and platinum. The samples used are LiCl, KOH, KCl, KI, RbCI, and CsCl. The ion current varies for several minutes after a sudden change of filament temperature and becomes stationary. The behaviour depends not only on the filament material, but on the sample.Halogen as well as hydroxyl on the filament surface seem to give different influences on the effective work function of filament material according to their kinds. During this transitional period, the ratio of ion current corresponding to the isotopes also varies, and the precise determination of isotope abundances cannot be expected. The ion current, of cource, varies in accordance with the temperature of the ionization filament, but it does not obey the Saha-Langmuir's equation. A maximum appears at the filament temperature of about 1000°. The temperature, at which the maximum, appears depends slightly on the sorts of alkali metals. This phenomenon can be observed in both cases of single-filament source and triple-filament source.

Enrichment of heavy oxygen isotopes was carried out by use of thermal diffusion columns, using the normal oxygen gas as the raw material. The dimention of the unit separation column was as follows: inner diameter the wall was 10mm, outer diameter of the hot wire was 0.72mm and the effective length of the column was 295cm. The apparatus consisted of eleven columns, overall effective length being 17.7m. Each column was constructed carefully so as to keep the wire at the centre in the column using micalex spacers.It was found that the equilibrium separation factor of unit column was 7.5 and approached the theoretical value, probably due the improvement of geometrical condition between the cold wall and the hot wire. If the equilibrium is established, the concentration of heavy oxygen in the bottom reservoir would reach more than 90 atom %. The transport of the heavy oxygen amounted to 1.8cc(18O2)/day.

The authers studied the excretion of N¹⁵ in two cases after administering orally the N¹⁵ labeled ammonium citrate(42.3 atomic % excess). One case was a healthy male infant of 3 and 3/4 years old with the body weight of 12.9 Kg and 373.2 mg(25.37 meq as N¹⁵ )was administered orally. The excretion of administered N¹⁵ in the urine reached a state of saturation in about 2 days and was approximated by an exponetial function. From the analysis of the results, it was estimated that roughly about 65% of the administered N¹⁵ was excreted in about 3 days. The excretion rate of N¹⁵ may be analysed into two portions: one is a rapidly excreted urea cycle with a half life of about5hours, while another the other slow metabolic pathway or pool with a half life of about 36 hours. The total nitrogen excretion was roughly approximated by the synthesis of the two functions representing the rapid and the slow metabolic route. Another case was a male infant of 5 and 5/12 years old with the body weight of 16 Kg, who was suffering from nephrosis, and 473 mg(31.57 meq as N¹⁵)of N¹⁵ labeled ammonium citrate was administered orally. Almost all of the administered N¹⁵ was excreted in about 2 days and 78% of the administered N¹⁵ was excreted in urine during 4 days. Its excretion rate was approximated by an exponential function with the same tendency as in the case of urea which was reported previously in the preliminary note. The half excretion time was about 5 hours. The measurement of the N¹⁵ atomic % was carried out by Prof. Hayakawa of Osaka Prefectural University with the Hitachi Mass Spectrometer of RM-C Type.
