The total extract of resin from Callitris preissii was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and 34 lignans, underivatized and as trimethylsilyl ether derivatives, were identified by interpretation of the mass spectra. The lignans in the resin include 13 new lignans, i.e., four secoisolariciresinol derivatives, four lariciresinol derivatives, 3′,4′-methylenedioxy-7′-hydroxylariciresinol, 3,4-methylenedioxypinoresinol isomer, and two matairesinol derivatives. Furthermore, 17 lignans of the resin are characterized by methylenedioxy substitution on either or both guaiacylpropyl units or the syringylpropyl unit: i.e., five secoisolariciresinol derivatives, three lariciresinol derivatives, 3′,4′-methylenedioxy-7′-hydroxylariciresinol, three pinoresinol derivatives, and five matairesinol derivatives, have methylenedioxy structures. Eleven lignans, including two secoisolariciresinol derivatives, four lariciresinol derivatives, two pinoresinol derivatives, and three matairesinol derivatives, contain a syringyl moiety.

Quantitative aspects related to atmospheric-pressure Penning ionization (APPeI) were examined by analyzing C6D6 in C6H6 using C6H6 as an internal standard. A linear relation was found in log-log plots between [C6D6+]/[C6H6+] and the amounts of C6D6 detected were in the range from 1.6×10-10 g to 1.6×10-4 g for C6D6 spiked in 0.4 μL C6H6, with a correlation coefficient of 0.995. The limit of detection for C6D6 was approximately tens of pg. In He and Ar APPeI, a major reagent for Penning ionization would be the rare gas (Rg) excimers Rg2*.

The design of a new type of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) ion source for ambient ionization is described. In this ion source, the DBD plasma is confined in the DBD tube so that the sample gases can be ionized just outside of the discharge tube by DBD excited helium gas without being exposed to the plasma jet. The findings indicate that the ion source is capable of the soft and high-sensitive ionization of explosives.

In surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry using titania (TiO2) films (TiO2-SALDI-MS), one of the most important aspects is the absence of matrix interferences in the low-mass region. Therefore, in TiO2-SALDI, the detectable mass range for small biomolecules, pharmaceutical compounds, amino acids, and oligopeptides can be extended to below m/z 500. The physicochemical properties of titania are dependent on the crystalline form of the material; however, thus far, very little attention has been given to the effect of the crystalline form of titania on titania-based SALDI-MS. We investigated the influence of crystalline forms on the desorption/ionization efficiency of TiO2-based SALDI-MS using different crystalline forms such as rutile, anatase, and a non-crystalline amorphous structure. On the basis of survival yield measurements using benzylpyridium chloride, and the desorption/ionization efficiency of peptides (angiotensin II and gly-gly-tyr-arg) and saccharides (cellobiose and hexa-N-acetyl-chitohexaose), it was found that the anatase-type TiO2 is suitable for the TiO2-based SALDI-MS. Rutile-type TiO2 lost the SALDI activity compared with TiO2 in other crystalline forms, although rutile-type TiO2 showed the highest UV absorbance.
