Phase interference effects in inelastic heavy particle collisions are reviewed. Experimental results are viewed in terms of the semiclassical theory. Types of the non-adiabatic coupling mechanisms are classified. In each type of the mechanisms, examples of the interference effects are presented. Non-adiabatic transitions between molecular states result in branching of the scattering path. Interference structures in the cross sections arise from the phase difference between the branches.

In order to improve the sensitivity of vapor pressure measurement in a high temperature mass spectrometer a modulated-beam pulse counting system has been developed which can compensate the background pulses in a short time. Using this system, the detection limit of vapor pressure more than two orders of magnitude lower than that of the conventional direct current method has been established. It is another merit of this system to be possible to statistically treat the measured counts quite easily.

Various target gases, helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, methane, ethane, propane and n-butane, were introduced into first field-free region of a Mattauch-Herzog double focusing mass spectrometer in order to investigate the effect of the pressure and the properties of the target gases on a charge transfer process C₆H₆²⁺ → C₆H₆⁺ at the region. The amount of C₆H₆⁺ produced increased linearly with the pressure of the target gas, as has been reported, and was found to be closely related with the ionization potential of the target gas. The mechanism of the C₆H₆⁺ ion production is investigated by the concept of curve crossing.

Thermal decomposition products of stereoisomeric polypropylenes(PP) are identified by simultaneous gas chromatography(GC) and mass spectrometry. Mass spectra of all the decomposition products separated by GC are given. The unknown decomposition products are identified on the basis of the mass spectra and the retention indexes, considering the decomposition mechanism. Retention indexes of stereoisomers of C₁₁ to C₁₅ hydrocarbons are determined by comparison of pyrograms of PP with different stereo-regularities.
