JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA low background mass spectrometer was constructed. The analyzer tube was made of stainless steel and sealed with copper gaskets, and Alpert type ultra-high vacuum valves were used. The whole apparatus can be baked out at 450°C for many hours. This apparatus has been evacuated for two months and baked out for ten times or so at the temperature of 150-400°C. The final vacuum of1×108mmHg was obtained with the use of ion getter Pump. At that pressure, the residual mass peaks are only m/e=12, 14, 16, 28, and 40. Therefore, this apparatus may be used as a low background mass spectrometer.View full abstractDownload PDF (4812K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe general aspect of an isotope separator, installed in the Institute for Nuclear Study, University of Tokyo, is described. Several operational characteristics as well as the working conditions for the separation of A, Zn, Sb, Mg and Ge are presented. The separated ion out-put was found to be several mA in every case . It was demon strated that the focusing point could be changed by means of a heterogeneous electric field. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA new method to measure or control the magnetic field intensity by means of a cathode-ray tube is proposed. The principle is based on the simple fact that the magnetic field intensity is in proportion to the electric field intensity when they are impressed on a cathode-ray beam perpendicularly with one another so as to keep the beam in a definite path. This idea may be applied, for example, to the scanning or the mass marking device for a mass spectrometer. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSPerformance test of omegatrons with electrode structures of box-type and guard-ring-type were carried out in approximately uniform magnetic field ranging from 2, 000 gauss to 10, 000 gauss. It was confirmed that the resolving power was in comparatively good accord with the theoretical value. When the magnetic field was 10, 000 gauss and the r-f potential was 2 volts, the resolving power of our omegatron with guard-ring-type structure was 65 for the ion mass of 65. The behavior of an ion in nonuniform magnetic field with axially symmetric distribution was examined analy tically. The result shows that such nonuniformity does not disturb the performance of the omegatron, and further more would improve the resolving power. This lead to the conclusion that a relatively small-sized magnet can be applied for the practical use of the omegatron. However, viewing from our practical experiences, the weakness of magnetic field imposes limitations on the performance of omegatron. As the magnetic field was intensified, the higher resolving power was obtained with ease of adjustment, with good stability, and without injuring the sensitivity. As for the electrode structure, the adjustment of conditions for the performance of box-type omegatrons seems to be more critical than for the guard-ring-type omegatron. However, a number of experimental tubes must be examined to arrive at a conclusion. The potential distributions of r-f electoric field in the omegatron were measured by means of the electrolytic tank method.View full abstractDownload PDF (992K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe natural isotopic abundances of the following elements have been determind with Hitachi Mass Spectro meters. Lithium, Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, Chromium, Rubidium, Strontium, Molybdenum, Barium, Tungsten, and Uranium. Ions except tungsten and molybdenum were produced by thermionic evaporation from the samples on tungsten, platinum and molybdenum filaments. In cases of tungsten and molebdenum, their ions were obtained from tungsten and molybdenum filaments themselves. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe Van Slyke's method has been used almost extensively in quantitative analysis of the blood gases. A mixture of 02, CO2 and one other gas which are solved in blood may be analysed with the Van Slyke's method since the amount of the first two gases are measurable with this method. However, it is impossible to analyse a gas mixture containing more than three sorts of gases. Mass spectrometry and gas chromatography, on the other hand, are considered to be suitable for the analysis of a mixture of many kinds of gases which are present in small amounts, such as the blood gases in anesthetized individuals. Total extraction of gases contained in the blood is required in the physical method of analysis of blood gases, instead in the Van Slyke's method. We have deviced a new blood gas extraction apparatus with referrence to that of Faulconer, in which helium is used as the internal standard. The blood gases extracted by this method were analysed with mass spectrometer and gas chromatograph and the values obtained were compared with those measured by the Van Slyke's method. This method may be suitable for the analysis of the blood gases, if the blood gas extraction is performed correctly. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn the quantitative analysis of an organic compound by physical methods such as mass spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy, standard samples are generally used, but their purity can not be determined by such methods. For this purpose, the method of thermal analysis is effective. Quantitative analysis of impurity is also possible without standard sample by means of the gas chromatography, when it is detectable. The author measured the purities of purified benzene and dioxane by means of the thermal analysis and compared the results obtained with those from gas chromatography. The apparatus of the thermal analysis was based on Rossini's method. A simplified apparatus was constructed to obtain necessary precision. The freezing point of pure dioxane was found to be 12.01±0.023°by this method. Main impurity in benzene used, separated by gas chromatography, was proved to beC7H16 by mass spectroscopy.View full abstractDownload PDF (2351K) -
