The chromosomes of the goat and the sheep were studied with whole blood cultures, without separating leucocytes. The cultures were set up by heparinized blood and culture medium without serum (1:3) with phytohaemagglutinin M.
Chromosome numbers, 2n, 60 for the goat and 2n, 54 for the sheep were established. The autosomes of the goat form a closely graded series of acrocentric pairs, while those of the sheep show 3 pairs of metacentrics in addition to the remaining acrocentrics. On the basis of karyotype analysis the X chromosome was shown to be the largest element of acrocentric nature, while the Y was identified to be the smallest chromosome of metacentric structure in both species.
