ELID-grinding is expected to be applied to most grinding operations in productions. The combination of ELID and an ultraprecision grinding machine has been proved to be effective for obtaining higher shape accuracy, and lower subsurface damage, together with improved surface roughness. In this paper using the ELID grinding technique, a high efficiency machining method had been discussed. The effect of cylindrical steel samples will be discussed.

In this study, a metal-free electro-conductive resinoid bonded wheel made of waterweed carbon as the conductive material was experimentally built to reduce metal ions in the grinding fluid and metal contamination of the work piece in the aim to develop environmentally-friendly ELID grinding techniques. At the same time, characteristics of initial electrolytic-dressing and grinding were also investigated. The results showed that the prototyped metal-free electro-conductive resinoid bonded wheel consisted of a layer of oxides with high oxygen level formed on the wheel surface by electrolytic dressing. The layer generated by electrolytic dressing was found to wear more easily than the matrix composition and in addition have a high frictional coefficient. For the purpose of checking the difference of #1200 and #8000 waterweed grinding wheel's effect, mono-crystalline silicon was ground with ELID, and grinding performance was measured. Using the wheel with ELID, high quality surfaces of 50nmRy were successfully achieved.

The purpose of this study is to investigate electrolytic-dressing characteristics and grinding characteristics for Electro-conductive rubber bonded wheel. This wheel is composed rubber, carbon, and diamond abrasive(#1200). As the result of dressing, the hardness of a wheel affects the wear characteristic and an air bubble generates a small grain size on the wheel surface.

The mechanical polishing of diamond cutting tools is said to generate micro cracks on their surfaces. Therefore, a new polishing method was discussed using the principle of diffusion of carbon atoms into nickel. Practically speaking, the face of cutting tool is brought into contact with a nickel plate heated at 523K in vacuum. As a result, it was found that the tool face was smoothly polished. However, it was also found that the chipping of cutting edge occurred frequently, and hence the tool life shortened, when using the thermo-chemically polished tool for turning of copper.

This study investigates a novel cutting tool which has micro/nanometer-scale texture on the surface. In the past experiments, the micro/nanometer-scale textures on the tool surface enables to reduce friction, resulting in the decrease in the cutting forces. This paper describes the effect of the shape of texture on the machinability of aluminum alloy. As a result, it was found that the cutting forces decreased with the pitch and depth of the texture. In addition, the texture was applied to the DLC coated tool, and the machinability was improved by the texture in addition to low friction due to the DLC layer.

Cutting point temperature and tool wear during a driven rotary cutting of SUS304 stainless steel was examined in this report. A rotary tool is attached to a milling spindle on a multi tasking lathe which has B axis control. Different from a self-propelled rotary tool, the driven rotary tool can widely control the tool rotation speed. We measured the cutting temperature by using tool-work-thermocouple method with varying the circumferential velocity of tool. Measured cutting temperature was 1100˚C or more by using a non-rotation tool. However, by a rotary cutting, cutting temperature was 1000˚C or less. Cutting point temperature tends to decrease with the increase of tool circumferential velocity. The magnitude of tool wear almost corresponds to the cutting point temperature.

In this research, the (Ti,Hf) N coated tool which is excellent in heat resistance is developed, and the cutting performance is investigated in high-speed machining of stainless steel which has the low characteristic of thermal conductivity. In wet continuous turning, the long life was shown on the high-speed conditions of cutting speed 4 m/s. Moreover, while a development tool has the uniform form of a cutting edge, most adhesion is not observed. Machined surface roughness was maintained to cutting length of 16km below at the surface roughness standard of 5μmRz. It showed clearly to show sufficient wear resistance also in milling operation.

The composite materials are used for the various mechanical parts, and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) are especially applied to air plane parts and so on. Moreover, the OD-blades are widely used for the precision slicing of CFRPs. However, it is known that low tool life is a problem due to slice the fiber with high strength. In this paper, we discuss the application possibility of the vibratory OD-blade method to slice of CFRPs. This paper presents the experimental results of the slicing accuracy and the tool life, and results show that the vibration slicing method has remarkably advantage for the tool life.

The traveling accuracy of a saw wire significantly affects on the cutoff accuracy in the wire saw slicing. In the previous paper, the authors developed a non-contact measurement device capable of tow-dimensional measurement of the transverse motion of a saw-wire under no-slurry and no-workpiece conditions. The device consists of two laser diodes and two dual element photodiodes. Using this device, the influence of the pulley's groove radius on the transverse motion of a saw wire is investigated.

It is said that lately developed minute pyramidal structured lapping films have more eminent finishing characteristics. It is because new abrasive grains come out during grinding process. However, details and its relation to the grinding conditions are not yet revealed. In this research, characteristics of this new tool were investigated by estimating changes of grinding forces by changing grinding load and grinding time.

The vibration finishing was carried out using a disc-type polishing tool with movements of rotational and orbital motion on stainless-steel plate surfaces. And a quantitative evaluation of the vibration finished surfaces was examined, using textural features calculated from the gray level co-occurrence matrix and 2-D FFT obtained from the surface images of them. As a result, differences of textural features between vibration finished surfaces and circular hairline finished surfaces were clarified. Moreover, effects of finishing conditions on the vibration finished surface quality were made clear.

This study aims to investigate the fixed abrasive lapping characteristics of diamond pellets (DP) experimentally and to compute for deciding the optimized layout of many DP on the 4 way lapping system based on its characteristics. This paper discusses the lapping characteristics through a series of experiments using a pin-on-disk lapping apparatus. Moreover, this paper demonstrates the optimized layout results as parameters of the DP diameter. Especially, a genetic algorithm is used as the optimization method for decreasing the deviation of the flatness cost function. This optimized results show that the genetic algorithm can design the layout of many DP for which the deviation of the flatness cost function is remarkably small.

This paper describes the manufacturing of die for injection molding by diffusion bonding of laminated metal sheets. Channels for circulating water were designed 2x2 mm in cross section and a distance of 2mm from the surface of the mold. The die was designed in such a way that the bonding line positioned on the surface of the die. The effect of bonding interfaces on the appearance of injection molded plastic parts (polypropylene and polycarbonate) was studied. The results were compared with a solid surface die.
