Recently, accurate and compact shape measurement system that can be installed into a production line is required in the industrial field. In my laboratory, we proposed linear LED device. A grating projector is composed with the device. The phase of the projected grating on measured object can be shifted with changing the position of lighted linear LED easily and quickly. In this paper, we developed a shape measurement system using the linear LED device and evaluated accuracy of this system.

Shadow moiré method can use a fine grating by setting the grating near an object, and it can measure three-dimensional shape with high accuracy. By combining with a phase shifting method, it is quantitatively analyzable with high accuracy. Furthermore, by combining phase-shifting method using light stepping method with LED light sources, the phase-shifting can be performed at high speed because of no use of movable parts. As a result, it provides a high-speed and highly accurate three-dimensional shape measurement system. The feature of the system and the know-how of the development are described.

A differential transformer using cylindrical capacitors is proposed in this work. Measuring capacitance changes to detect its displacement is the unique point of this sensor since most of such sensors are consist of electromagnetic coils and detect its flux change. This study has conducted to investigate the possibilities of improvement in response frequency and of decreasing instability of zero point caused by a magnetic body movement, by replacing the function of coils consisting of a differential transformer by capacitors. First, it is shown that the same composition as a differential transformer can actually be realized by capacitors. Secondly, non-linearity errors of sensors are reduced by increasing the number of electrodes. The developed sensor exhibit a linearity equivalent to a differential transformer and an excitation frequency of 39 kHz, which is about 10 times as high as that of a differential transformer.

Displacement sensors using coils, such as a differential transformer, are widely used as key components e.g. automobiles, industrial machines, due to its good linearity, high sensitivity and durability. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the possibilities of shape alternation of displacement sensor and increasing a degree of freedom using capacitors instead of coils consisting of a differential transformer. We propose a plate-type differential displacement sensor with the degree of freedoms of two. This sensor is developed based on the technology of electrostatic-induction-type differential displacement sensor using cylindrical electrodes. A prototype of this sensor can measure two-dimensional displacement without mutual interference, and the non-linearity errors are less than ±0.7 %.

This paper presented an investigation on a frictional behavior subjected to ultrasonic oscillation for a rolling-element linear guideway. The most significant problem with sliding and rolling bearings is the existence of the friction force between the sliding or rolling element and bearing surface, either during pre-rolling regime or rolling regime. The investigation during rolling regime is focused on the relation of friction force and the driving velocity. In pre-rolling region, the investigation is focused on the nonlinear spring behavior (NSB). The experiment was executed by moving a single-axis guideway in a sinusoidal motion with the ultrasonic oscillation applied to the rail and the carriage. It is found that during the rolling region, ultrasonic oscillation has reduced the friction force. However, when the maximum velocity of the motion is very small, the friction force become larger. During the pre-rolling regime, ultrasonic oscillation reduced the spring constant of the nonlinear spring behavior during pre-rolling regime as compared to the normal condition, which is without oscillation.

The present study aims to measure small-size holes with diameters of 17- 24 mm and depth of 1,000 mm. The system consists of a laser interferometer to detect hole accuracy, a probe connected to a measurement bar and an optical apparatus to detect probe attitude (position and inclination). The probe is supported by skids. The probe position at the skids is continuously detected by the optical apparatus and compensated from the data acquired by the laser interferometer. In this study, the influence of probe-deviation in a hole on measurement of hole accuracy is examined. Further method of the correction of the error is presented.

Stereo robot vision system achieve stereopsis by using two cameras. To solve the correspondence problem between right and left images, we proposed a pattern matching technology and applied the technology to a stereovision system. The proposed pattern matching technology employs a liquid crystal display (LCD) and utilizes the polarization of light. We use the LCD function of controlling light penetration for our pattern matching. We use two LCDs arranged in piles. The image from each camera is displayed on one of the LCDs; the correspondence between the two images is then judged by the light intensity through the two-layer LCD. Using this two-layer LCD, correspondence between extracted objects in right and left images is roughly obtained, and the computational costs for the pattern machining can be reduced. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technology, the stereo camera was mounted on a remote-control model car, and an experiment was conducted for autonomous mobile robot. Tracking object in front of the autonomous mobile robot obtained from the stereo camera was extracted and displayed on the two-layer LCD, and the distance to the tracking object was calculated through triangulation.
