We tried to design and develop a hybrid vice to utilize the pruned branch as the basis for a wooden toy. The hybrid vice combines two types of vices; one is a universal vice to clamp the irregular shaped lumber made from the pruned branch and another is a block vice to set the wooden toy, a LEGO like block cut out from the pruned branch, in the original place. We designed four types of block vice and examined their performance through a machining of simulated block. As a result, we can propose a practical hybrid vice by combining the universal vice having two moving sharp edges and one fixed screw with the block vice that can set the block by sucking force and non-slip mat.

Sapphire has superior characteristics, such as hardness, chemical stability and high wear resistance. Therefore, processing to sapphire is very difficult. By the way, it is known that the sapphire can react with silica and iron oxide at high temperature and high pressure. Using these phenomenons, mechano-chemical polishing to sapphire was performed by silica and iron oxide. Glass was selected because glass is containing silica. S45C and SUS304 were selected as ferrous material. In this study, First, machined volumes of sapphire using each material and processing atmosphere were compared. Second, machined volume of sapphire was examined when using ferrous material, and changing the feed rate and cutting speed. Finally, it was possible to combine roughing with SUS304 and finishing with glass.

Sapphire has high hardness and chemical stability. Therefore, it is difficult to machine the sapphire. The sapphire is reacted by silicon dioxide under high pressure and high temperature. Sapphire was machined using this reaction in our method. Glass was chosen as the silicon dioxide-rich materials and cut with sapphire. Wear of the sapphire was regarded as the removal of the sapphire. The removal volume of the sapphire was increased with the machining time. The removal volume under the water atmosphere became more than that under the dry atmosphere. The smooth surface was obtained under the water atmosphere at the lower cutting speed and the smooth surface was obtained under the non-water atmosphere at the high cutting speed.

There is no actual plan to make next-generation X-ray telescope after ASTRO-H project. We are making aspheric fused silica molds for NASA/GSFC that launched hard X-ray telscope made of LCD sheet glasses last June. But the X-ray mirrors were conical shape, not accurate aspheric shape. We intend to make aspheric molding dies of 100 nm accuracy.

In barrel finishing by centrifugal disc type, the whole mass (media, workpieces and compound solution) generates the spiral flow intricately. Therefore, the finishing mechanism is not solved and it cannot be said that finishing conditions is not necessarily selected rationally. In order to solve this finishing mechanism, the relation between finishing conditions and the distribution of stock removal and finishing presser in the mass was considered experimentally. As a result, it became clear that the finishing power higher than the upper layer of mass has arisen in the lower layer of mass near the disk of a bottom.

Improvement in Removal Rates and Possibility of reducing abrasive usage by controlling the dispersibility of polishing slurry for glass based materials was reported previously. In this research, some factors, such as abrasive particles size, abrasive concentrations, pad types, pre-polishing surface statuses of work pieces, were studied for their effects on improvement in removal rates.

TCO (Transparent Conductive Oxide) film has widely been used in many industrial fields because of its excellent conductive characteristics and the transparency at the visible wavelength. However, it is required to perform the processing without any damages to other thin layers except for a removal object and to apply for various kinds of TCO film. The phenomenon in scribing ZnO film was investigated by the observation of scribed groove and removal processing.

Recently, the demand for high strength and long life to industrial products such as molds has risen. A method for the demand is a forming of a hard film to the surface of the base material. But heat-treating with electric furnaces deteriorates the characteristics of base material and it is not suitable for a local surface reforming. The laser processing is suitable for a local surface reforming. To form Fe-Al alloy film on the surface of steel block, laser was irradiated to the aluminum film that is attached on steel block by the shot lining. By irradiating laser widely and homogeneously with a beam scanner, a Fe-Al alloy film was generated without change of characteristic of base material.

Diamond was put into iron powder and the surface of the iron powder was heated by a YAG laser beam. The diamond was removed by thermo-chemical reaction between the diamond and the iron powder. The conditions for processing the diamond were examined. The diamond was removed in the iron powder. However, it was not removed in aluminum powder. The iron powder was adhered on the diamond surface during the process. Therefore, the removing method of the adhered iron from the diamond surface was developed. There were the suitable value of the depth and the area of the iron powder for removing process. The suitable irradiating conditions were also examined.

In order to establish an efficient machining method of Tungsten Carbide for dies and molds, the authors have carried out series of turning experiments of tungsten carbide by employing various kinds of PCD tools and CBN tools, and investigated the fundamental cutting performances from the view point of the tool wear. In the present research, high speed milling experiments of tungsten carbide have been carried out. The effects of the cutting speed and others on the tool wear are presented here.
