Binderless nano-polycrystalline diamond or cBN exhibiting excellent performances for precision cutting tool uses has a very fine and dense microstructure, in which small grains of several tens of nanometers are directly and strongly bound together. Their cutting performances are strongly dependent on the grain size, texture and intergranular strength. In this study, we investigated the microstructure features of various nano-polycrystalline diamond and cBN synthesized by changing starting materials and synthetic conditions, discussing the influence of the microstructure on the mechanical properties and cutting performances.

A mechanistic model to predict thrust force and torque in drilling is presented and its application to bone drilling is evaluated. The cutting action at the drill point is divided into three regions – the cutting lips, the outer portion of chisel edge (the secondary cutting edges) and the inner portion of chisel edge (indentation zone). Models that account for the unique mechanics of the cutting process for each of the three regions are formulated. The models are calibrated to the workpiece using specific cutting pressure equations with modification to take advantage of the characteristics of drill point geometry. The models are applied to predict thrust force and torque for drilling bovine cortical bon and evaluated for a wide range of spindle speed and feed rate. Prediction results for cutting lips, chisel edge and entire drill point agree well with experimental data. Only torque predictions for the chisel edge are lower than experimental results at some drilling conditions.

Appropriate illumination condition of polarized light at visible region might be absorbed and converted into metal/insulator/metal structure constructed with subwavelength thin films, especially gold or silver layers as metal filmes. The absorbed electromagnetic energy could be trasnferred into periodic fluctuation of free electron density in metal films, and resultant surface plasmon polariton could be excited at metal/insulator interface efficiently. This research aims for application of the SPP to intense and focused point light source as a optical fiber probe of scanning optical microscope. Basic characteristics of excitation and propagation of the SPP around dividing wall between twin-hole at one of the metal films have been studied both numerically and experimentally. The numerical simulations have been performed by commercial electromagnetic analysis package based on finite element method. On the other hand, the basic experiments have been done with both vacuum evaporated MIM structure on glass slide and focused ion beam fabrication method.

Si nanowire arrays have attracted interest for potential application in solar cells and antireflection layer due to their low reflectivity. Generally, it is known that the light reflectance strongly depended on the surface texture. Therefore, in order to obtain further low reflective surface, modification of the morphology of nanowire arrays with controlling degree of bunching would be important. In this study, we prepared Si nanowire arrays with different surface morphology, and investigated optical properties of those nanowire arrays. The ordered Si nanowire arrays were prepared by metal assisted chemical etching using anti-dot patterned Au as an etching catalyst. The HF-H2O2 solution was used for the etching of Si. In this method, nanowires were bunched each other by surface tension of the solution during drying process. To prepare the arrays of separated vertical Si nanowires, we used supercritical carbon dioxide that has much more small surface tension than deionized water. On the reflectance measurement, the nanowire sample showed lower reflectance than bulk Si. In particular, bunched nanowires showed lower reflectance on visible light range than the vertical nanowires.

Our passive THz-SNOM (Scanning Near-field Optical Microscope) probes spontaneous evanescent waves with 60 nm resolution without external illumination. In this THz-SNOM, we use a little metal mark for probe positioning. We expect that using the local temperature change induced by a LASER spot as a mark enable to measure other various samples like biocells. Here We report a fundamental verification.

The last presentation (Spring meeting 2013 ″A Transmission Characteristic of the FMGF(Fast M-Estimation based Gaussian Filter)″) verified the deviation with the transmission ratio of FMGF and transmission ratio of GF at the cut-off wave length level λc is very few less than 0.001% if no outlier exsists. This presentation verifies low computational cost that is another advantage of FMGF. Specifically, that measures processing time using real primary profile, and compared with GF etc.

We present a method for extending the space bandwidth in dual-wavelength off-axis digital holography. By the extension, both the field of view and the resolution are improved without the image degradation caused by the superposition of the 0th-order wave and conjugate image on the object wave. The effectiveness of the proposed method for the application to single-shot three-dimensional surface-shape imaging is numerically and quantitatively verified. The optimal angles of the reference waves in both wavelengths are also quantitatively clarified.

A Polarization Mach Zehnder Interferometer (PMZI) was implemented to analyze transparent samples using a two-step algorithm to retrieve the optical phase data. The major drawback of the two-step phase shifting algorithms is that can′t be used in the singular case where the phase shift correspond to Π, this case specially presented when using a polarizing beam splitter as a detector when interfering cross circular polarized beams. In order to take the advantage of the PMZI, certain conditions need to meet in the beams to properly obtain the interference patterns and correctly retrieve the optical phase data. We present the experimental setup based in obtain interference of elliptical polarizing beams in opposite directions to properly use the two-step phase shifting algorithm encountered in the literature. The major novelty of this configuration is to avoid the use of linear polarizing filters at the output in each interferogram and also it can be easily extended in more than two interferograms to retrieve the phase more accurately. Experimental results of dynamic events are presented.
