Ti-6Al-4V has been widely applied in the aerospace, medical, chemical and many other industries in recent years, because its inherent superb mechanical and chemical properties can well satisfy rigor industrial application requirements. However, also as a typical difficult-to-machine material, great attention was consistently attached to its turning process, and ultrasonic assisted machining lubrication techniques were used to improve its machinability. Nevertheless, ultrasonic was mostly superimposed along the direction of the cutting speed in the existing techniques so the turning process was restricted by a ″critical cutting speed″, eventually limiting the material removal rate. In this paper, the attention is paid to the turning of Ti-6Al-4V under elliptical ultrasonic lubrication where the ultrasonic vibration is superimposed in both radial and feed direction in the base plane. The fundamental turning characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V is researched by experimentally investigating the effects of vibration amplitudes and depth of cut on the machining characteristics such as cutting force, cutting temperature and surface roughness under the in-base-plane ultrasonic lubrication. This paper reports the results of our preliminary research.

This paper reports the stress distribution inside of the workpiece under ultrasonically assisted orthogonal cutting (UAC) condition. It is widely noted that UAC reduces the average cutting force and cutting heat generation. However it is fundamentally difficult to observe the dynamic cutting process phenomenon with ultrasonic frequency band. In this research, stress field inside of the workpiece during UAC was observed by combining method consists of the pulse emitting source synchronized with ultrasonically vibrating cutting edge and the photoelastic method. It was observed the stress distribution changed synchronizing with tool vibration speed even if the intermittent cutting condition. The photograph captured by high-speed camera showed that the shear plane moved with vibrating cutting tool. It means that the conventional explanation of UVC based on relative position between tool and workpiece is insufficient.

A new method for monitoring of elliptical vibration cutting process is proposed in this research by utilizing internal data in the ultrasonic elliptical vibration device without external sensors such as dynamometers and gap sensors. The internal data utilized here are change of resonant frequency, applied voltages and electric currents flowing through the piezoelectric actuators of the vibrator. Cutting experiments were carried out at various cutting conditions with a sharp tool and a slightly worn tool, and the internal data were acquired during machining. By analyzing the data, it is clarified that the internal data are correlated to cutting forces in the elliptical vibration cycle, which reflect the state of cutting process such as tool wear, chipping of cutting edge and structural displacement.

We develop an algorithm to automatically color faces in a monochrome photograph. A face is one of the most important parts of human body and carries a large amount of expression. We use a 3D face model with reference colors and match the orientation of the model face to that of a face detected in a monochrome photograph to be colored. We make a 3D face Model with reference colors by mapping the texture to the model. This face model is painted with typical colors based on reference images from internet and image collection library. By transferring the model′ colors, the monochrome face is colored naturally. We computer similarities between the colored results from our system and the original color image before grayscale-converted. Human subjects are asked to evaluate the quality of colored images. This study will reduce a total time for coloring monochrome photographs, which is currently manually performed by experienced users.

In this study, we propose a system for detecting respiration shut off and disorder breathing without contact and restraint by using Kinect. We examine applicability of Kinect V1 and V2 to our proposed system. As the result of examination, it is confirmed that the signal of Kinect V1 includes lower noise than Kinect V2. Therefore, we conclude Kinect V1 has higher applicability to the system.

We propose a novel metal-free process to flatten a next-generation semiconductor surface. A key in this process is to develop high-quality graphene catalysts to reduce O2 molecules to H2O in solutions. In this presentation, we first show a method to obtain the flakes of reduced graphene oxide which are dispersive in solutions. We also demonstrate nitrogen doping to a graphene network. And the catalytic activity of these graphene-based materials is investigated by electrochemical measurements.

It is generally known that a high density of pits is formed on a SiC surface during graphene growth. In contrast, we have found that the pit density of a SiC surface can be reduced by surface treatments including plasma oxidation at room temperature prior to the graphene growth. In this study, we analyze by-products on a SiC surface after the plasma process by infrared/Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. And we unveil the relationship between the surface condition of SiC after the process and the quality of graphene on it.

Researchers in surface plasmon resonance and surface plasmon polaritons are interested in alternate materials of noble metals. One of the alternate materials is metallic nitride. Authors have been focused on titanium nitride (TiN). Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of the TiN film has been done to form flat and thin film with high crystallinity. In this talk, structural and optical estimation of a series of TiN films deposited by many different PLD conditions will be reported.

Edge-aware image filter is an important tool in CG, CAD, and image processing applications. In this research, we propose a novel, fast, and high quality edge-aware color image filter. Our filter is based on a linear ridge regression approach with fast L1 Gaussian convolutions. Minimizing a cost function in our regression model is equivalent to apply a set of linear smoothing filters for image statistical moments. We employ a domain splitting algorithm for smoothing which possesses linear computational complexity with very accurate approximation. Thus, our filter is capable of producing high quality results quickly.
