Ultrasonic bonding was attempted by a longitudinal wave perpendicular to a contact surface, stacking a pair of PET, ABS, PC substrates of 1 mm thickness and 50 mm square. Though heating to 30 50 ºC above the glass transition temperature of each polymer was needed for thermal bonding using a heater, ultrasonic bonding of polymers occurred at 20-kHz frequency and ± 5- m amplitude. Furthermore, an ultrasonic horn with a vacuum chuck improved bonding condition uniformity, and the maximum polymer bonding strength at the center of the bonded area was 2.9 kN.

In polishing of aspherical lens shape or a large diameter reflecting mirror such as astronomicalobservatory, 'a small tool' is used, which is smaller than the workpiece. Since small tools have low polishing efficiency, we propose a novel polishing method that leada to enhanced removal rate using AC electric field. In this paper, we describe the results of the frequency dependence of the polishing rate on silicon wafer by a small tool using slurry controlled by AC electric field. We will also describe the difference depending on the type of polishing pad.

Etching process of GaN surface by water molecules with a catalytic assist of Pt was investigated by means of the first-principles reaction path and barrier analysis. By approaching Pt to GaN surface, water molecules in between the two surfaces are found to be dissociatively adsorbed at the kink site of GaN surface. Interaction with Pt strongly reduces reaction barrier height. After the dissociative adsorption of the second water molecule, Ga atom initially at kink site is transformed into Ga(OH) 3 molecule and become almost removed from the surface.

Methods to rapidly analyze the single cell metabolic activity is a vital way to study in detail about the body dysfunction, cell proliferation, cell survival and carcinogenesis towards particular drug intake or any kind of diagnosis. As a main task of this project, we plan to fabricate three electrodes (working, reference and counter) in a single microneedle about the tip diameter of 1 μm - 3 μm and length about 3 mm for identification of several metabolites in single cell. A combination of electro polishing (to create needle) and sputtering (to deposit electrodes) will be employed to fabricate microneedle electrodes.

For postoperative examination, cell culture of the surgical specimens and seeding them in a multi-well plate are required. At this time, cells are detached from the dish using an enzyme etc., however, the culture period is prolonged because of the damage of the cells. To expedite the pathological examination, we propose a culture dish that can be seeded on multi-well directly in quantitative division of the primary cultured sample without detachment. In this report, the basic principle and the culture characteristics by the base material are reported.

Calcium alginate particles are usually generated by the cross-linking reaction between sodium alginate droplets and solution of divalent cations like CaCl2. The previous works using aqueous mixture solution as reactants would definitely induced the deformation of sodium alginate droplets and produce gel particles with un-uniform shapes. To solve this problem, here we present a method using CaCl2 emulsions as reactant. We fabricated a glass microfluidic chip consisting of two cross-shape junctions for generating Na-alginate droplets and cross-linking gelation respectively. We successfully produce gel particles using this device and also investigate the influential factors of CaCl2 emulsions on the gel particles′ shapes. Through controlling the properties of CaCl2 emulsions, we can generate calcium alginate particles with roundness over 0.95.
