The aim of this study is to investigate the ultrasonic vibration assisted grinding phenomenon by visualization of stress distribution. The stress distribution on soda-lime glass, caused by diamond electro-deposited wheel with the diameter of 3mm, is visualized by photo-elasticity method. By assuming that the stress distribution is sufficiently stable for one rotation of wheel, the continuously captured movie is reconstructed to 3D stress distribution by Computed Tomography. In this report, the stress distribution which is caused by single abrasive grain was mentioned to clear the chip-generating phenomenon. Furthermore, we demonstrate that effect of wheel vibration was visualized.

It has been reported that pulsed magnetron sputtering using an asymmetric pulse power source is a useful technique for depositing a dense thin film. In this study, the effect of the duty ratio of pulse frequency and applied frequency on the properties of SUS 304 stainless steel films was investigated. All films deposited at room temperature showed a metastable bcc structure regardless of frequency and duty ratio. On the other hand, it was found that the internal stress of the film depends on the pulse frequency, but it hardly depends on the duty ratio.

Micro-stereolithography is one of the most powerful manufacturing techniques to produce micro sized three-dimensional structure layer by layer. Its mechanism is essentially based on the curing (solidification) feature of photosensitive resin - resin in liquid state convert to the solid state under the irradiation in the specific wavelength range. In order to ensure each layer in fabrication is in enough curing degree and cured in the correct shape, the in-process measurement on distribution of resin′s curing degree is strongly required. In our investigation, a measurement method that detects the refractive index variation of resin using near-critical-angle reflection has been raised to achieve the in-process measurement in micro-stereolithography. Since the relation between refractive index and the curing degree of resin that is has been experimentally measured, the distribution of resin′s curing degree in fabrication process can be obtained once the refractive index variation is in-process measured by proposed method. This measurement method has been proved both theoretically and experimentally. The formation process of a single layer of cured resin in stereolithography has been successfully recorded.

The purpose of this study is to develop a non-contact bearing that has fewer components. Ampere force is used to support a shaft in this research work. Ampere force occurs in the direction that is perpendicular to the direction of an electric current and that of a magnetic field, when the electric current is supplied in the magnetic field. Galinstan that is one of the liquid metals at room temperature was used in order to supply the electric current to the shaft. Therefore, the experimental model was hybrid between a bearing using Ampere force and a hydrodynamic bearing using the Galinstan as a lubricant. This study examined the support of the shaft and the center position of the shaft during rotating by applying the Ampere force.

Hydrostatic bearing has high rigidity, damping properties and high rotational accuracy, and is suitable for wheel spindle of grinder. However, due to the viscous force of the fluid, the power loss of hydrostatic bearing is larger than that of the other bearings. Therefore, a reduction of power loss is desired. In the previous paper, we have reported that the proposed hydrostatic bearing with the pure water as a lubricant can reduce the power loss by about 30 %. In this research, the power of hydrostatic bearing with a mineral oil, which is commonly used for a lubricant of machine tools, is evaluated by fluid simulation and measurement.

In the 3-axis control machine tool, there is a limit to the constant surface quality with the creation of the curved surface shape. In this research, we aim at improvement of machined surface quality by using a method of synchronizing the straight advancing axis and the turning axis of a 5-axis controlled machine tool and making the feed velocity vector constant at the cutting point. We made circular cutting using cutting point feed velocity vector constant condition. As a result, it was found that the form shape error is reduced by using the forward feedforward control under the constant feed point velocity vector.
