ABS(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene)has favorable properties such as toughness, impact resistance and rigidity as compared to other polymers, so it is used as parts for automobiles and home appliances. However, the weather durability is low, though it is possible to increase the durability by plating metal onto the resin. Also, plating enhances the surface durability such as abrasion resistance etc. and decorativeness of the resin. Conventionally, chromic acid and sulfuric acid are used for plating pretreatment on ABS resin. However, chromic acid has a negative influence on the environment. As an alternative technology, environmentally friendly atmospheric UV(Ultraviolet)treatment was used in this study to modify the ABS resin as a pre-treatment. In this study, it has been pointed out that the plating adhesion strength varies depending on the condition of UV irradiation treatment time. Conventionally, in the plastic plating process multiple annealing treatments are long in duration i.e., 1 hour. This study is also focused on the annealing conditions comparison after plating processes with the goal of optimization of annealing treatment time. This study helped to reduce total annealing treatments time by 55.5% in plastic plating process as compared to conventional annealing treatments time.
